I had a day off yesterday and i was out and about and as i was walking through town i spotted this women in a high pair of heels (5 inches atleast) as we passed each other i told her she had nice heels to which she said oh thankyou and smiled.

What are womens thoughts on a man complimenting them on there heels by not knowing them?

Last summer, I was tottering through London, on my way from the hotel to a bar before a sex party, wearing a short booby bandage dress (Google it) and the highest heels I own.

Got to some lights, they were just about the change. Man on opposite side holding hands with his little toddler. We both waited for the lights to change again. When they did, as we crossed, he said - you could’ve made that! I said - not in these shoes, asking for trouble. Yes, he said. A lot of legs, in those shoes. Smiled and continued. I smiled. It actually managed not to be a creepy exchange, it was nice.

And of course he had no idea I’d be naked and having sex with people an hour or two later, wearing only the shoes

I get this. If I was making a 'random' compliment I'd be a bit worried about coming over 'creepy' That would put me off doing it unless I had already made some connection be it a smile or other innocuous comment.

Maybe we should all try to do it more and do our best to be genuine.

When lm out socialising l never wear flats ,l notice not many high heels are worn at all nowadays unless to a wedding or fancy do etc,especially the younger generation, so when lm complimented on mine they must be really into them.

This just keeps going from bad to worse. Now you even know her intention and her thoughts.

1 Was it wrong for you to compliment a woman on her shoes ? In this instance NO.

2. Were you really complimenting her shoes ? NO ( by your own admission above )

3. Would you have complimented an unattractive woman on her shoes ? NO

4. Is this a way around wolf whistling ? Could be.

5. Will it be taken with a smile in every instance ...Probably NOT

The ' obviously she wanted me to' .... is a step too far for me.

I see what you did as innocent, innocuous and an act handled by two adults but it's fraught with misinterpretation ..

I would just save it for people you know.

And I would NOT like a stranger in the street to comment on my shoes. I'm big enough to take it but i'd give them a fucking wide berth. ( again it's contextually dependent )

Like Red described above, a fleeting comment when passing... that's genuinely lovely.

I compliment random strangers all the time, hopefully it makes them smile.

The more you talk the more apparent it is that you're fetishising rather than simply appreciating her nice shoes. But hopefully she took it as a simple surface compliment rather than being skeeved out by what actually drove it

Having read the op's comments it actually isn't 'just' complimenting her shoes is it? The more you comment the more it comes across less as "I like your shoes" = innocent to sexualising the woman via her shoes

Like some have said it’s all relative to context. OP, had I read your comments on a fashion forum or a sartorial forum I MAY have seen them as, indeed, complimentary.

But as they are posted on a ‘sexual’ forum I find the comment to be as creepy as fuck !

This is how I tend to offer a genuine compliment.

I'll say something along the lines of, I do like your ......, Do you mind me asking where you get them from, I think my partner would like those.

I would be very flattered, although tbh, if I’m out on the day, my heels tend to be ‘sensible’ 2” courts. Easier to walk in, far more comfortable … and more what a lady wears during the day.

I don't see any harm in that. Women often approach me and compliment me on my clothes or how I look and I frequently do the same. I think we're naturally a bit wary of a man doing it but a passing compliment with good intentions is ok in my book.

Me too tbh.

I both make and receive shoe compliments with strangers of all genders.

It's nice.

If I do it on the Tube it tends to be on an overground section and when we're clearly getting off at different stops - feels more innocent that way.

A guy approached us in the street to compliment me on my outfit. We found it slightly unusual but we didn't take it as anything other than a compliment.

Most women can tell a genuine compliment unfortunately long experience has taught us to be wary.

If this was in a bar on night out yes prob compliment on her on her whole outfit to be fair not just pick out shoes, on the street during the day noooo would of given a smile as walked by, was rest her outfit not nice then? I mean if a woman is wearing seriously high heels then her rest of attire would of looked amazing as well I believe.

i think the tone of the compliment would be thing that lots women would take it in context.

if sounded creepy then women (or others) will be unsure of the complimenters resons/intentions for saying what they said
