It's unfortunate about the job loses, especially in the current climate.

Although if a business doesn't adapt to changes quickly enough they risk obsolescence and eventual closure irrespective of the companys' seniority in it's particular field..

An old boss I worked for saw the future of trading and sold the shop where I worked.

He said 'no bills to pay, no staff to pay, no outlay for upkeep of the property.

A number of retail chains have yet to bite the dust as we all get increasingly to grips with Internet shopping.

Jessops was never going to survive the Internet revolution. Think about it. You can research the camera you want on line, get real re_iews, shop on line for the best price and have it delivered. The alternative is transport and parking costs and then taking at face value what the sales assistant tells you and paying the price they ask - if the product is actually in stock.

This is nothing to do with the recession or government policy but has everything to do with Internet shopping and more shops will be closing as an absolute certainty.

The country is not on its knees at all. The stock market is up, confidence is high in British business, unemployment has peaked and we are still a wealthy nation.

Greece is on its knees with 25% unemployment and no control over its own interest rates. Despite the media led doom and gloom stories Britain is faring OK and there is not unsustainable unemployment, there is not widespread homelessness and even the poor have sky tv, mobile phones and other luxury items.

It could be better, but the country is far, far from being on its knees.

Can't see it happening anymore than it did for Comet. If you do a basic SWOT analysis of the business, there are two massive threats to Jessops: internet sales and the simple fact that virtually every mobile phone sold now has a camera in it...

Camera/photography shops are going to become niche/specialist very quickly...

The first of many this year that could go under. With people cuting back on what they spend plus niche markets being under more pressure than others plus easier online buying, chains/stores like this are going from being on the edge to over it. Still not nice for the people affected though

So what will they do with the 520 Firefighters then?....can they possibly redeploy that many people to other stations?

The reason I ask is because the Fire Brigade down this way announced yesterday that they have had their annual budget cut by £5 million and that it will lead to Stations being closed and in excess of 90 Firefighting jobs lost.

Worrying times indeed....

think about it... take pic on smartphone with 8mb lens for beginners, download on computer and save.... and you can buy professional attachable lens for the iphone to make it a much more attractive option

but its not just the iphone... the better the smartphones get with the built in cameras, the more it squeezes on companies like jessops...

Reading the paper yesterday morning. They expect 4500 high street shops to go this year. It said Jessops was owned by an investment co. They took money out but did not re invest meaning the company never stod a chance, a long slow death. The owners make millions over the years and the staff and suppliers lose out. Many of the big names will go under as banks are no longer re structuring massive loans... But where there are big loses there is big money to be made look at comet...

I'd have thought that 4,500 might be nearer 45,000.

Jessops, as I recall, was saved from administration a while back. The private equity group did little to support thge dregs of the firm but didn't actually force administration on them.

Banks aren't actually doing anything at the moment. They're hoarding cash because of the undcertainty.

Sad news. Looks like the box-shifters win over the personal service usually offered in shop. No amount of re_iew writing will ever replace holding the goods you want to buy in your hands first - far better than some amateur hacks coloured advice born out of the fact he got a 'deal' out of it. Go buy a D4 at some faceless .com vendor or shop with staff that don't know how to fly the kit and try getting it fixed when it goes bang - there's advantages to haveing a dealership presence on the highstreet.

Digital cameras have become 'just consumer electronics' now with this latest closure. It was sad to see Jacobs go locally, but this takes the biscuit.

If you want the personal one to one service now you'll have to dig it out at an extreme premium.. usually around page 5 of the results on google - all that expertise written off for the sake of a low price - what pricesluts customers really are these days lol.

The problem with Jessops was that so few of their staff had a clue about anything, let alone what they were supposed to be selling. There are plenty of online camera retailers that still have bricks and mortar shops and also have knowledgable staff at the end of the phone too.

I was surprised that Jacobs went before Jessops, their staff were always far better and their prices were pretty much on a par with Jessops.

Even shopping for cameras online in this country is expensive. I've just paid a shade under £2k for a lens that, had I been in America would have cost me less than £1500, the same price as a grey import from Thailand/China etc.

"HMV don't look too good either their shares have dropped 34% in a week"

Having worked at HMV, the company are killing their own stores by not offering the same prices in-store as they advertise online (and even then, unless the item you want is on sale, they just cannot compete with Amazon/Play, ect. when it comes to prices). When I asked my manager what I was supposed to tell customers who asked why we were cheaper online, I was told simply to say "I don't know" which didn't fill me with much confidence, but I assumed it had something to do with tax/VAT.

As an ex employee, I will still shop there every now and then. The only genuine appeal though is having the item immediately. Nothing else.

I've just paid a shade under £2k for a lens that, had I been in America would have cost me less than £1500, the same price as a grey import from Thailand/China etc."

Jacobs were the better group when it came to service admittedly

Re the 2k lens - Those plastic holga lenses aren't cheap are they!

It's not just the chains though - kodak is in severe danger of disappearing for good. It's only clinging on by its patent royalties. It'd be a say day if the firm that brought cheap affordable photography for all went.

Kodak missed the digital revolution almost completely, thinking that it would damage their film business if they pushed digital...ironically, not pushing digital ruined their film business and left them with nothing else !

I only paid £2k cos it was white and had a red ring around the end

What is not helping high st retailers, as against those in out of town malls, is that local councils have made going shopping on the high st way to expensive with their parking charges and draconian enforcement of parking fines for being 5 minutes over.

But councils are not bothered as they do not have to earn money like retailers, they just take and imprison if you do not pay!!!

That's about right...our town centre now consists of hairdresser, hairdresser, hairdresser, charity shop, pub, charity shop, charity shop, tacky no-brand clothes shop, Greggs, Costa, charity shop, charity shop, pub, hairdresser, charity shop, Argos, Wilkos, Peacocks...not necessarily in that order !

Even McDonalds moved out of the town, as well as Superdrug, Burtons and and a couple of other well known, established High St. brands.

Jessops has always been 'niche' in my eyes. Over priced crap what you can buy cheaper in any store. Radio shack will be next

"First casulties of the year such a shame.

Id look out for argos before the end of the year as well

argos won't go... although I wouldn't be surprise if they focused much more on the internet side and scale back on the stores......"

I think Argos have already announced before Xmas that some less profitable shops are closing.
