Reports that so called Boffins from the Institute of Physics do not want the term boffins used as it deters young people becoming boffins.

This should be renamed as the Institute of Clowns...

It's all over the news..

What's going on here guys

Actually the word Boffin comes from the Ancient Mesopotanian word bof'ro-astras

which means devil or deceiver.*

This is also where Buffoon comes from. Maybe that's why they don't like it?

Yes, there's an interesting story to be told about the intersections between magic, trickery, and intoxication (which of course has overlap with stupidity). It's a rich area of historical research.
