I can't stand...

... because I use a wheelchair

Now I've lightened the mood, I'm off on a little whinge, so recommend that any sensitive readers look away....

This week, the following things have happened (most of them today)

1) A man popped out from an archway between two bars on Peter St in Manchester, and as I negotiated the (uneven) kerb, he proffered a baguette between his legs. Asked me if "it was big enough or had I had bigger", which I ignored. His mate shouted after me that "I'd obviously had bigger and that's what put her in the wheelchair".

2) Queues of people going into bars at 3-4pm blocking the pavements and despite quite literally shouting "excuse me" at the top of my voice, no-one moves and you get trodden on with stiletto heels.

3) Phone zombies on Market St walking without looking and crashing into me x1000 at least.

4) People who don't understand that cobbles + wheelchairs don't mix and forcing me onto the cobbled areas, rather than moving.

5) People with crappy food stands blocking the flat paved areas, meaning cobbles are the only option.

6) Train guard nearly refusing to get a ramp out because she'd decided the platform was too narrow (I had to argue!). It was not. The same guard left me on the train, got off and headed home.

7) People who put their bicycles in the train wheelchair area and bitch about moving it, when a wheelchair user boards.

8) Hire car companies at an airport that do not have wheelchair accessible offices and so you have to sit outside in the rain.

That'll be all for today

I'd put a complaint in about the train guard.

That's all terrible, people are so inconsiderate.

That was 2 days' worth.

I'm also going to whinge about my (new) wheelchair breaking, so I'm back in the old one that not sized for me. Likely to be the case for 2 months now, maybe longer. That's my car AND wheelchair both broken (hence the hire car).

It never rains but it pours, huh. I hope this has all been a temporary blip on your otherwise upwards trajectory of improvement

Yeah, I will. It doesn't cause any change though! It's a shame because my last few train experiences have actually been good! Most people can't abide Avanti West Coast, but their staff are ace with the access stuff. Ditto Merseyrail. Northern are not

Society is ableist as hell. I'm sorry you had such a horrid day today.

Also, regarding your first incident with the muppets making stupid jokes about you being in a wheelchair, they're lucky I was not a bystander there because I would legitimately have yelled them off the streets and lamped them if it came to that.

No, it's not because I'm trying to curry favour or anything, but because I cannot stand yobbos who make puerile jokes at the expense of others they know full well can't retaliate back at them verbally or physically for their idiotic words. Too many mouthy yobbo idiots who weren't clapped in their mouths enough when they were kids.

Hope you have a good Sunday's rest.

My husband and young daughter were someway back up the street, so my husband didn't hear or see it and obviously I didn't want to sit there and wait etc. And our daughter was with us.....

My son's god dad in his early 30s so decades ago had a motorbike crash and his t4 was absolutely crushed so left paralysed from his nipples down ... fucking shit

But instead of moaning about it he created his own charity (now world wide), a mega business, has a gold medal for Britain in the Para Olympics and has competed against what are so called normal people in several sports right up to world championships level

We are what we think we are, we are awesomely amazing but what amazes me are ignorant people that stop others from an amazingly awesome life

I have witnessed, not felt your pain, but can truly say never give up being the better person you are!

And kerbs. What the fuck is wrong with the lack of any or proper dropped kerbs in a city centre?! And signboards blocking the pavement. And scaffolding. And tables/chairs. And don't get me started on the delivery people on souped up e-bikes!

Have you seen the new hover chairs they are developing? Basically a massive drone. But image nipping to shops at 200 ft. No more issues.

Toyota are building exoskeleton assisted suits, I think they are close to market release.

These technologies look promising to make the wheel chair redundant and the issues you have highlighted a thing of the past.

The future looks brighter for disabled people. Either with advanced medical intervention or new technology to improve mobility.

Although I would say, they should half the amount of disabled spaces in Tesco’s. Most are permanently empty.

Exoskeleton suits already exists and can be yours for just around a million quid or something. Very affordable

I also don't know if suits like that would be practical for day to day pottering around the house or going to the loo etc? Who knows.

And I'm quite happy with the number of spaces at Tesco (other supermarkets are available). We have struggled to find blue badge parking at many supermarkets and it's getting ridiculous in town and city centres. The multi storey at work has 414 spaces. 4 of them are blue badge bays on the ground floor. There's only a lift to the odd number floors and the spaces on regular floors are incredibly narrow. I pay exactly the same for a season ticket as everyone else, because that's how private car parks run. However, I frequently arrive at work and find myself unable to park. There's nowhere else within easy push. I've arrived in the street outside 20mins early and been 30mins late, because I can't park. That's what happens when bare minimum provision is there. Better a few empty than people unable to get to work etc because of lack of provision. I don't think I've seen a decent size supermarket car park 100% full, with all spaces occupied.

I'm so sorry you experience these things. Generally people are self centred knobs.
