If there are rock ledges nearby, lots of gulls would go there to sleep. Some just go farther down the beach, away from the crowds at the resort towns. Some overnight at the local landfill. They only go to their "nesting grounds" (as someone else suggested) if it is nesting season and they are raising a family. Birds do not sleep in nests. They lay their eggs in nests, and, once hatched, the babies only remain in the nest for a short time. Think of a nest as a short-term nursery rather than a permanent bedroom. So now you know!!
