I’m not a huge F1 fan but it’s always mostly been the car in my opinion.

When he had the best car, he was winning championships. When he didn’t, he isn’t.

It’s always a constructors AND drivers thing with F1.. of course there are some drivers that are better than others and can stretch a limited car to it’s limits, but Imho the true mark of the best *driver* would be if they all competed in exactly the same car.

Can remember sir jackie stewart coming to our motor club for a presentation night somebody asked him what the differance was between good racing drivers and world champions .his answer

Take a minute split in two and you will safely get around the track in a race .

Split it in two again and you might get onto the podium

Split it in two again and you should win races

Split it in two again and you should win a series

Split it in two again and you will have the reflexes to be a world champion

Thrown in a lot of luck and being in the right car at the right time and you will do it more than once

"Difficult to steer from inside a closet. "

My thoughts entirely. I think he's "fab straight".

Not that that has any baring on his driving abilities....

He's just a spoited bratt and not having the best car shows he's not the best driver.

"He only wins in the best car, true champions win in the worst car!"

Nobody wins anything in the worst car

In reality, there were a few of the championships where Mercedes didn't have the best car, but they did have the best team.

It's impossible wo say if any given driver is the best driver ever, but Hamilton has certainly achieved more in a racing car than any driver previously.

What I do like about Hamilton, is that he is the first to praise his team (win or lose) and places all of the blame on himself for getting less than the best out of a situation... he unlike Max is a real team player.

I'm also not sure why it would matter in any way what his sexual preferences might be.

I don't think he was driving for Mercedes when he won the British Karting Championship aged 10. He also won championships in Formula Renault where all the cars are the same spec. as well as having success in GP3 and GP2. He even won competitions racing RC cars as young as 7... against adult.

Am smirking at some of the comments suggesting Lewis might be gay or bi

This is a guy who - allegedly - boasts Rita Ora, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna as well as models Barbara Palvin, Gigi Hagid, Winnie Harlow, and Sofia Richie on his CV. He was certainly with Nicole Scherzinger back in the past for a few years on and off

He's also a devout Catholic

Hey! These speculators might be right. And it of course does not matter one jot what Lewis enjoys doing!

Sadly, there's a lot of people that simply don't like Lewis Hamilton and as such refuse to acknowledge what a good driver he is. I don't know why, but suspect there's at least some elements of racism, since the same things are not directed at other drivers.

Personally, I think Max behaves like a spoilt child far too often. He's still undoubtedly a fantastic driver.

Well put. And spot on.

From reading other posts about him, there does seem to be a lot of venom towards him.

I appreciate most of us have sportspersons we dont like because...well....just because.

But the dislike of Lewis seems out of proportion.

Personally, from what ive seen if him in interviews, especially more relaxed ones away from the circuit, he seems quite a genuinely nice guy.

But you have to laugh at some suggestions that he's a shit driver..privileged.

With the exception of Rosberg - all the world champions for at least the last 14 years have been hated by a lot of people when they were winning: Vettel, Hamilton and Verstappen. It just seems par for the course for people to be haters when someone wins.

Obviously when they start losing everyone starts to love them again - takes some time but look at Vettel now.

A stupid statement Verstappien is a much bigger brat than Hamilton. And I often saw Hamilton take a car that was not as good in Maclarens declining years and win in it.

Even Mercedes has admitted their car is uncompetitive. I doubt Hamilton haters on here have a tenth of his ability.

I don’t think you can say the best but probably one of the best but when you have a dominant team and average team mates you will always win.

IMO Alonso is probably the best 2 times world champion although never been a fan.

Vettel is probably the worst 4 times world Champion.

Shumee probably along side Lewis again best team gets the best driver at the right time.

Why is it a bad analogy.. The point being: The best drivers end up in the best cars much of the time.. Why? Because they have been identified at an early age, and as they go through the junior categories, they win, and win, and win.. And so when they get to F1 they are very quickly snapped up by the best teams, who have the most money, and the best cars.. Just like footballers.. It is a perfect analogy.

Also no one has mentioned how Hamilton is the greatest driver ever, yet he was out performed by his new team mate last year!

I think he had gotten too used to having the best car on the grid and all the wins coming so easily. I'm not sure he has the hunger and motivation to help improve the car and fight for the championship anymore. He seems to be to distracted by his music and fashion ventures!!!

I think due to technology in motor racing we forget how hard it is to drive at speed continually. Sure, drivers have modern aids to help which is more about the car. But you still need ability, confidence and a huge level of skill you and I will never have to get to the very top.

I see it in kids racing around dirt ovals in the states and even at 16 they are cutthroat, ruthless and have a win at all costs attitude.

People easily mock F1 and NASCAR drivers and reckon it's easy or anyone can drive in a circle.

But the truth is at the speeds they do, and often tightly packed on superspeedways at over 200 mph for over 4 hours the pressure and concentration needed is beyond measure.the slightest error, bump or touch and everyone is in the wall hard.

Thanks to safety modern racing is a lot safer. F1 drivers use to die 3 to 5 a season and until 2001 NASCAR had drivers die regular.

It took nascars most famous driver to die for things to change.

But I can honestly tell you from being around and meeting drivers they are a different breed. They don't care about anything else but winning.

Schumacher, senna, prost in recent F1 times were selfish but champions. Earnhardt and petty in NASCAR were the same.

You still got to drive the thing to win. and every driver needs the right team to do it at the top level.

That is why top elite drivers divide opinion and Hamilton is no different
