Transitioning To The Big Screen…

Somewhere In The Ether…

Good folks: Following on from the Luther film thread - the finalised result which clearly divided opinion, can you give me examples of TV series which in your opinion, when given the full length feature film treatment, have been good and conversely, those which have been bad?

To start you off, here’s two examples: Downtown Abbey - I felt that this made the leap to the big screen effortlessly with two brilliant films.

Unfortunately, despite my love of the series, I felt that The X Files films were decidedly underwhelming affairs however (the second one was particularly terrible in fact!)

Away for Christmas

Firefly - Serenity is good

Now, as for bad. That depends really because so few are actually movies and more like extended episodes. I shall ponder this.

Mission Impossible.

An undeniable success with the transition from TV to cinema.

In my opinion the latter in the series (rogue nation and fallout) are some of the best action films ever made.

Crossroads was a pretty crap soap but the movie version with Ralph Macchio was much better with a better soundtrack.

Serenity is fantastic! Very well written, feels like a suitable continuation without being an extended episode if that makes sense? Not the biggest fan of extended episodes.

"Inbetweeners didn't fair so well"

The first one did. Its loved by the vast majority of fans, even none fans.

The second... Not so much. But even then it wasn't terrible. It just went too big. Believed its hype and was sniffing it's own darts and getting praised as exceptional by yes men.

The Equaliser: Denzel Washington took up the mantle from the late, Edward Woodward in these highly satisfying actioners.

A third entry is on the way

Stourport-On-Severn

Probably showing my age here a little bit, but "Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy" was a big disappointment to me. I absolutely loved the original BBC series with Alec Guinness. He completely "owned" the part as George Smiley. I had very high hopes that Gay Oldman would also "own the part" in the 2011 film as well. The thing is though, he just did not convince me he "was" George Smiley. It was still avery good film...............but nothing compared to the original BBC series.

I don't believe there is a power in the verse that can stop Meli from being cheerful.
