Weight loss is a gradual thing..don't try and lose it too quickly..keep eating sensibly and doing regular exercise...

People get lose motivation after a few weeks as they expect too lose lots of weight quickly....keep at it for a few months and then look back and you will see a big difference.

I asked my weight watchers leader today about points earned for sex.. she said on average for 30 mins sex you would earn 2 points.. I asked about 5 hours and she about fell off her chair.. lol

I think its finding the exercise that works for you that is the key.

I'm a qualified jump rope instructor and its one of the best forms of exercise you can do. Fun, mental & physical (cardio & toning benefits), stress relieving, motor skill & coordination improvement. Less stressful on the joints than jogging! So it has loads of benefits. Get your music on and its like having a little dance about . Once you have mastered the basics, there's always new skills to learn, such as doubles, triples, criss-cross. Once you have got your fitness up, start mixing HIIT training into your routine and also perform interval circuits.

Also as someone else mentioned, cycling is awesome too! I'm also a qualified MIAS mountain bike leader & cycling is a fantastic non impact exercise, especially if your just starting out on your fitness regime

My advice to anyone on a diet, although I have never ever been on a diet, however imo if you eat regularly and healthy and exercise then you won't need to follow any fad or programme.

A little of what you fancy will do you no harm, yet everything in moderation.

I'll just pass on what a customer of mine, who is a Naturopath (? no, I don't either.....), explained to me a couple of months back. It's working for me...

Most importantly watch your sugar intake. No more than 90gms a day - preferably 60gms. Excess sugar intake is now widely understood to be the cause of obesity - not fat intake. The level of fat intake has increased by nowhere near as much as sugar intake in the last 200 years (since processed food was invented).

Replace as many cups of tea or coffee as possible with a glass of water. Tea and coffee are dioretics (think that's how you spell it) and impede weight loss.

Avoid where possible anything white - bread, potatoes, etc etc due to the carbohydrate starch content.

Get plenty of sleep. The old rule about calories in = calories out can be helped enormously by ensuring you sleep properly as, the last time I checked, you can't eat while you're asleep! Also, your body will still be burning calories while asleep as it still takes 1200-1500 cals a day for a man just to keep all your bits working - sleeping or awake!

He also suggested one or two days per week of water fasting. I've tried that, but it's bloody hard feel great the next day, but hard all the same.

Slowly working for me.... and a LOT easier than any 'diet' I have ever tried..

Forget any fads that might tempt you at this time of the year - the easiest way is to count the calories, watch the fat intake and exercise. I did this last summer because I had worked away a lot, unhealthy breakfasts etc etc - I lost a stone in three months and was toned up again. Did nothing special other than watched what I ate, mainly cutting out the crap, biscuits, cakes.....

Tons of good advice on here... just to say that the army trainers with whom I sometimes train are quite unanimous in saying that exercise is a fab way of getting fit but the main ingredient is watching what you eat, planning ahead what you eat and keeping as Cali suggested

a record of what you have eaten. It is surprising what we eat without thinking sometimes.

Don't cut meals out and starve yourself.. On this plan you have to eat to lose. As already said, between 1-2lb a week is perfect.

NN - it is quite possible that 1.5lbs a week is YOUR rate of weight loss AND that is a HEALTHY rate of loss.

Everyone is different. If you were to carry on losing at the rate you did in the first six weeks, the moment you stopped it would pile back on on no time.

Talk to your group leader about it - he/she will explain.

That sounds ideal to me, think how long it took to put it all on, you can't expecting miracles. As long as its going down, your heading in the right direction. Try not to concentrate on the scales, use the other tools available, such as how you feel (not out of breath as much), how your clothes feel, look in the mirror to see your body changing shape.

Weight loss always comes thick and fast initially, especially if you have more to lose.

1.5 a week is a healthy weight loss, these 'lose a stone in a day' fads you see on the internet are rubbish. As its been said, your mind set is already fixed in losing a healthy weight & its proven that its more likely to stay off doing it how are you.

One little tip I will give you though is that you may have hit a plateau, this is were the body becomes accustomed to the exercise that you are putting it through. It sounds like you need to mix up your routines to me. Have you done any High intensity training? Intervals? These are fantastic for really giving you a boost. You can do those on the bike ride to work too! Try different group exercise classes at the gym. DO NOT STICK TO THE ONES YOU FIND EASY OR LIKE! (most important). Yes, exercise should be fun & enjoyable so that you stick with it, but I think trying some new routines, classes and techniques will do you the world of good! And once you notice an increase, your motivation & determination will be right back on track.

Keep up the great work, you'll do it!

You should appreciate that it took you a long time to build up the weight so the reduction would be gradual also.

Best approach is to have at least a six months target date to review things. More Ideal to have 12 months target date. Just keep being active and eat sensibly I would say. Don't worry so much about how much you have lost every week. Don't forget that even if it seems you have not lost a lot of weight, you are converting your fat into muscle initially. Also you must be feeling better with all those cycling. It happened to me and I am really glad I did it. Now I am hooked on jugging.

Been reading this with interest, and quite a few people are ill informed or under informed, below is a article I wrote a cpl of yrs ago, and is on my website.

There are two parts !st is how fat is put on.

Then how it is lost! to loss fat you need to know how it is gained. which is what I include below.

This subject probably has a greater level of misunderstanding than practically any other health or fitness topic.

The first misconception is that you can get rid of abdominal fat by working your abdominal muscles. This is based on some belief that fat is eliminated from a part of your body if you engage the muscles underneath that fat. It's the same idea that you will lose fat on your legs if you pump your legs all day. The truth of the matter is that your body decides where to put fat and where to remove it, and it's a system that is largely determined by your genetics. Your body wants to distribute fat based on a few clever strategies pioneered by your ancestors.

First of all, your body stores fat in your midsection (your abdomen, hips or buttocks) due to basic biomechanics. The midsection of your body is the best place to store extra energy because it takes less energy to carry it around. Remember, fat storage is a survival strategy, so your body wants to maximize energy efficiency in the creation, storage and use of body fat.

It wouldn't make sense to have a lot of extra fat on your fingers and toes because you'd have to swing those around when you moved and that would require extra caloric expenditure. So given that your body wants to store fat as a way to have portable energy, it makes perfect sense that it would prefer to store that fat in your midsection.

Secondly, from an anthropological point of view, the placement of body fat body fat can be used cosmetically to pursue this strategy. (Of course, it all happens automatically. You don't have to "think" about where to put your body fat on any particular day, any more than you have to "think" about why you might sometimes feel attracted to another person.)also has some implications for mate selection. This is especially true in women, where fat is stored in locations like the hips, buttocks and breasts to actually create a more attractive physical body in order to attract a potential mate. In this way, the fat is stored in predetermined locations on your body for much the same reason that a male peacock has brightly colored feathers -- it's part of the mating game, so to speak. Exaggeration of physical traits is a common evolutionary strategy for mate attraction in primates, including humans. And

Thirdly, your body stores fat wherever you have fat cells. This may sound obvious, but it's actually interesting when you realize that people who undergo liposuction to remove fat cells from their body end up causing a redistribution of fat to other locations that might be less desirable.

For example, if a person follows an unhealthy lifestyle that results in the accumulation of excessive body fat, then they undergo liposuction to remove that body fat from their abdomen, but they continue to pursue the same overconsumption lifestyle that creates more body fat, then the body has to store that fat somewhere and since the fat cells have been removed from the abdomen, it's going to put that fat somewhere else like the knees, or under the chin, or under the arms and so on. Your body has to work with the fat cells that exist, and if you start removing certain fat cells, you end up with fat being stored in places you might not have expected.

(This is one of the most common pitfalls of liposuction, by the way. It all sounds great until you look in the mirror one day and find that you have twenty pounds of body fat sagging off your knees...)

Part to Fat loss!

I see a lot of books and products that talk about reducing abdominal fat. They say "If you eat this way you'll lose abdominal fat first." Nonsense. There is no food, no exercise, and no herb that will cause your body to remove fat in one place versus another.

If you want to reduce body fat, you need to start consuming fewer calories than you expend on a daily basis. In other words, have a calorie deficit. In time, your body will start converting fat into useable energy, and by doing so, fat stores will begin to vanish across your body. But they won't just magically disappear from one particular place.

If you are a male, abdominal fat is probably the last fat that will disappear from your body. First your body will remove fat from your face and extremities, such as your arms and legs, then it will remove fat from your upper torso, your chest, upper thighs and buttocks, and lastly it will use the fat stored in your abdomen. There is no way that I'm aware of to alter this fat reduction pattern used by the human body (except to use so-called "topical cutting gel" products which are highly toxic fat solvents that should never be used by people who want to protect their health).

This means if you are really serious about reducing body fat and you want to get rid of that abdominal fat, you're going to have to take a whole-body approach. You're going to have to get used to the idea that abdominal fat is probably going to be the last fat to go. This isn't what you wanted to hear, probably, but it's the truth.

For women, this means the last place you're likely to lose the fat is on the hips and buttocks. This is something you may have already observed if you've ever tried to lose body fat, or if you've made some progress but couldn't seem to get rid of that last bit of so called "stubborn" body fat.

I agree, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of the last 10 lbs of extra fat, and especially so if you consume any of the popular foods and beverages in the standard British diet (which greatly promote obesity and fat storage).

I've also found from experience that it's virtually impossible to lose body fat if you don't engage in routine physical exercise. And strength training is included in that exercise. By engaging in strength training, you will end up burning fat for hours and even days after your exercise session. There are also a lot of things you can do in terms of controlling your consumption of carbohydrates and altering natural hormone levels in the body to help reduce body fat.

Some people talk about growth hormone and using HGH supplements or DHEA, and certainly those can help with the reduction of body fat by, in a sense, moderating the biological aging taking place in your body. But you're never going to have total success with fat loss unless you also engage in regular physical exercise and pursue a healthy diet.

When it comes to abdominal fat, remember, there's no way to eliminate that fat by itself without taking a holistic, whole-body approach. In other words, there are no fat loss shortcuts. And even if you try to take a shortcut by undergoing liposuction, for example, you're still going to end up storing body fat somewhere else and it will probably look even worse than when it was on your abdomen or hips.

So if you want to get rid of body fat, do it the right way: through diet and exercise, and not through cosmetic surgery or gimmicks that claim to eliminate fat from one specific area of your body. Fat loss takes real work, and even though there are some helpful appetite control tools available right now (like hoodia gordonii supplements), there are no magic pills that will do the work for you.

This isn't what you'll hear from those selling fat loss supplements and diet pills, of course. But it's the truth as things stand today. Maybe we will see a revolutionary approach to fat loss at some point in the future (perhaps the PYY appetite control nasal spray, for example), but chances are that medical researchers will continue to be baffled by the human body's multiple, redundant calorie accumulation mechanisms that have so far made it impossible to develop a safe, effective fat loss wonder drug.

Look up something called Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT for short. It is excellent for weight loss. I am trained in EFT. Lots of videos on you tube about it. Very easy to learn. Makes weight loss a doddle.

"Part to Fat loss!

Its amazing how many people don't stick to the basics. How people think you can spot reduce fat and by doing 1000 sit ups everyday you'll have a 6 pack. Don't eat carbs because they are evil, when its simply a case of calories in calories out.

"HIIT cardio and a calorie deficit "

True but not always best another article I put together and is on my website

You run and you run, and you don't shed a pound. It's one of the leading emotional pain points for people who exercise. All of that effort and so little reward, but why is that? Simple: Cardio is not the fastest way to lose weight, and it's certainly not the only way. There is a solution, though, which will allow you to spend less time in the gym and see even better results.

You've Heard: You Can't Burn Fat With Strength Training

Far too many people are focused on how many calories they burn while they're in the gym, but this is shortsighted.

Stop focusing on how many calories you burn in the gym and instead focus on how your body expends calories outside the gym. You burn calories throughout the day regardless of what you are doing, but exercise helps increase the rate at which you burn those calories. With most forms of traditional steady-state cardio, you expend calories while you're exercising, but once you stop, you quickly go back to your normal metabolic rate.

Strength training, however, builds muscle, and more muscle helps you burn more calories -- even when you're doing nothing but sitting on the couch.

"Strength training is a critical component of any program than emphasizes long-term fat loss," said Alwyn Cosgrove, co-author of the book "The New Rules of Lifting." Think of it like this: Muscles are "thirsty" from a metabolic perspective. The more muscle you have, the more fuel you are constantly burning. This is the advantage strength training offers if your goal is to lean out. A treadmill or elliptical trainer is often seen as the quick fix to shed body fat, and they are certainly useful if your goal is to improve cardiovascular health, endurance or simply to burn some extra calories, but strength training is a powerful ally.

You've Heard: Resistance Training Makes Women Bulky

This myth just won't die and, unfortunately, it's horribly misguided.

And to prove it, just go to any big-box gym in the UK and see how many 140-lb. guys with pencil-thin arms and a beer gut are in the gym multiple days a week, trying to get "big" or "huge."

Clearly something isn't working. It takes a lot of work both in and out of the gym to get big or bulky. You not only need to be dedicated to your training, but you need proper nutrition if you're serious about putting on size.

"There is a big misconception about what causes bulk. Bulk isn't muscle; it is muscle covered by fat," said Mike Roussell, author and nutritional consultant. "So if you feel that you are too bulky, then it is important to fine-tune your diet to lose the excess fat -- not give up weight training."

Women have a distinct disadvantage if the goal is to put on size. They have about one-tenth the testosterone of males, and testosterone is a key component in the muscle-building process. So even if you're working out just as hard as a man, lifting the same amount of weight and gorging on calories, you still won't see the same results with regard to muscle building.

Women can, though, build muscles. Instead of big and bulky, they will be the type of long and lean muscles many women desire.

You've Heard: Weight Training Limits Athleticism

If your goal is to move and look like the Hulk, then feel free to continue performing body-part splits and hitting every machine in the gym. Those machines have their place, but they are not indicative of every weight-training routine.

If your goal is to look, move and feel like an athlete, you need a different approach. "Elite athletes need their body to function as an efficient unit. Splitting the body into parts like legs, chest, back and biceps will not meet that goal," said Wil Fleming, performance coach and co-owner of Force Fitness and Performance. "Instead, focus on big-bang movements that utilize multiple muscle groups -- both the prime movers and the smaller stabilizers."

The premise here is simple: Stop isolating body parts and pumping away mindlessly on the machines. Focus on big-bang, compound, multi-joint exercises. Hire a trainer or coach and learn how to squat, deadlift, chin and overhead press safely and effectively.

The only reason your athleticism will be limited in the gym is if you follow an ineffective program or one that's designed for "show" versus "go."

You've Heard: Running Is the Best Way to Get Fit

It's not that running as an exercise is bad, but it puts a fair amount of stress on your muscles and joints. Recreational runners can have injuries caused by weakness in the core and hip-stabilizing muscles. All Olympic Athletes use some for of weight training in their Training to increase core Strength. The better plan is to take time to develop the muscles of your core and hips first instead of jumping off the couch and running three miles.

For the hip stabilizers, start off with basic single-leg exercises like split-squats, lunges and step-ups. For the core, exercises like front planks, side planks, will help get you stronger and more stable, making you much less likely to injure yourself when you do decide to run that 5K.

Some people need activities that are a bit more joint-friendly, as the pounding caused by running on a treadmill or pavement is simply too much. If you like more traditional options, a dual-action exercise bike or rower will not only engage a ton of muscles, but take some of the stress off your joints as well.

If you want newer (and possibly more exciting) variations, consider kettlebell swings, medicine ball or barbell circuits, Prowler pushes, or even battling rope variations.

There are many different ways to get into shape, and while running is great, it's just one option you have at your disposal.

What We've Said

Strength training can help you lose body fat and is likely a quicker ticket to better fitness than just plain cardio exercises. It also won't limit your athleticism, but more likely improve it, and women can derive tremendous benefit from resistance training without getting bulky.

For those of you who like to run, it is one way to improve your fitness, but definitely not the only way. As with any program, though, you have to put in the work. It's time to get into the gym.
