Leaving your mark

No.

Not on someone's arse cheeks.

On the world.

When you shuffle off this mortal coil will there be something physical left to remind others who you were or what you did?

My grandfather was an engineer and for years before he died he's always point out buildings or locations where he'd worked or designed a feature and he'd say "I built that" or "I designed that".

I've had a few things published that will be available for others to see online long after I'm gone thanks to the internet.

Of course leaving your mark doesn't have to be a physical thing - some people's actions go down in history (for good or bad reasons) and they're remembered fondly or otherwise.

Is it important to you to have contributed to society in some way that's memorable to strangers, or are you happy at the though of just being remembered by family and friends after you become worm food or ash?

A

Just around the corner

I’ve lasted a very minor and peripheral part in getting some things built, and contributed to a few publications so yes I suppose. But nothing very exciting in the grand scheme of things.

I hope to be a net benefit to the world. I don't care if I can point to anything, or if I generate fame.

Nope, I'll leave the world very much unchanged. My friends and family may think of me with a smile and an occasional laugh, but once they too have shuffled off this mortal coil and the charities my estate is willed to have spent whatever money I leave there will be nothing on earth to show that I was ever here.

I find my own transience a pleasing thought.

I've not changed the world but I think I have made a difference for some people and their lives..

I'm happy with that

Interesting thread, OP!

I have no ambition to make a mark through any achievement although bringing up my kids to become self-sufficient, decent human beings leaves a tiny mark on society and those who will encounter them, granted.

I just want to become the best version of myself over time which means evolving, improving and revisiting some experiences. That's all really.

I wonder if there is still a table in the chemistry lab on which I scratched my mate’s name so he’d get into trouble?

Thing is, he did the same and we both got hauled in. Got away with it by saying “do you really think we’d be stupid enough to scratch our own names?!”

Ahem.

That’s my mark on this world

Not me I don't think but there is a statue of my Aunty in the local hospital grounds and she was awarded an OBE for services to Nursing....She also has a wing named after her in the local care home and has written books for student Nurses specialising in Orthopaedics

Saved a few people from potentially drowning at the beach over the years...nothing quite like the feeling of reuniting a lost child with distraught parents.

surrounded by twinkly lights

There are quite a few people who will remember me, with a smile on their face, due to the positivity we have been able to share over the years, as my nurturing caretaker personality has reached out and helped, if only for an instance.

Balance in life is needed though, and there are a few, who are glossy apples that have rotted to the core, that will hate me forever...and I am perfectly happy with that

Mr is a bit wierd, he plants acorns every year and has done since he could walk. We can drive somewhere and veer off course, he will then point out an oak tree that he planted in his youth

Our children are probably our only legacy. We're just ordinary people who will only leave a mark on the lives of our loved ones.

I'd like to make a big difference to the world, but I'm not that special and there's nothing I could do that would leave a lasting impression on this world. As long as I have made my loved ones happy and they remember me fondly, that will do for me.

Awesome idea. A way better contribution than any mentioned so far.

I don’t often say this, but I’m feeling good about myself.

I’ve definitely improved the lives of a lot of people/families in the most desperate of times. Sadly a lot of them will be gone before me, but I know I’ve made a difference in the time they have left.

That will do me nicely.

I think that the small things we do add up though. We might for example not give Bill Gates sized donations to charity but the small donations people like you and we make add up to make a difference.
