Nothing in stock

I don’t know if it’s just where I am or if it’s going on in the rest of the country.

But there is absolutely no food in stock in most supermarkets or small food shops. Kind of worrying when you consider the price of living has gone up. Was curious to know if anywhere else in the country has this issue?

Our Sainsbury's was very well stocked today. Tomatoes, cucumber, peppers etc all available with variety. Other stuff perfectly fine. No issues here whatsoever.

Went to supermarket last night, shelves well stocked, no problems.

Local small shops are also ok.

Don’t know where you are choosing to shop OP but maybe you need to reassess.

Same here but I’m the shit end of nowhere if that makes any difference, most shops have been closing down completely, lost a bank last week

We're in the middle of butt fuck nowhere.

It's 11 miles to the nearest supermarket. That one has plenty of food, as do all the others within a reasonable drive.

I have friends in the west Midlands too and none of them have asked for food parcels to be sent up or for us to phone Sir Bob to set up a big concert to raise money for starving midlanders.

Are you sure the shops you went into were actually still trading OP?

A

I've found both Sainsbury's and Tesco have plenty of stock of nearly everything. The only issue for me is with eggs and that's caused by avian flu. Both Sainsbury's and Tesco own brand free range eggs are actually barn eggs but the packaging and price have not been changed. The only way you know is by the "barn eggs" noted in small print next to the best before date.

As I understand it, barn eggs are not from chickens kept in those tiny cages. They are allowed to move freely but within the confines of the barn. They're not allowed outside however.

Generally 'I did my own research' loosely translates as 'I saw it in a meme on Facey so it must be true' or 'I watched someone else's shitty YouTube video'.

Rarely does it involve ant actual research.

Supermarket ranges here have been steadily shrinking for a while - I've really noticed a restriction in choice and there are always a few items on my list I can't pick up from the first one I try.

Thankfully I'm blessed with a couple of good butchers and some greengrocers, and they've had no shortages at all. Now if I could only find a good local fishmonger I'd be well set.

Panic buying clowns are to blame. Like during the great 'Toilet Paper Crisis', one of the UKs darkest time (that's sarcasm). I worked in a Tesco warehouse, where there were aisles are aisles full of the stuff. We just couldn't despatch it quick enough. Last week we had an unprecedented 1cm of snow, the shelves were emptying quicker than my bollocks in a brothel.

He hasn't quoted it. The words were put under his face in a meme.

The phrase comes from an essay submitted to the WEF, not written by Schwab. It was a submisssion for creative writing ideas of how the future MAY (and I've put that in capitals) look. It wasn't part of any policy suggested by anyone at the WEF. Well known conspiracy theorist Mark Moss and Russell Brand started sharing content online claiming it was all part of an agenda by the WEF rather than what it actually was - a piece of creative writing written about the future.

The BS exponential growth was down to sites like 4chan sharing it alongside other conspiracy theories and the fake story grew from there.

Even the original author has stated it came from her, not the WEF. It doesn't take long to find the truth about these things but hey - a conspiracy always sounds more fun doesn't it.

And that's how panic buying starts, from one person exaggerating their experience. If I was the panicky type, OP, I would have read your post as "oh God, there is food shortage, quick, stock up!". Luckily a) I don't tend to panic and b) went to my local Lidl yesterday and there was plenty of food, including fresh produce.

I would have thought the beginnings of the pandemic taught people a thing or two, particularly how quickly small issues with supply chain at shops could cause country-wide panic buying.

What's the difference between panicking and recognising ongoing shortages?

Because I've had ongoing shortages for a long time. I improvise and occasionally I send pictures privately of empty cases. (Not so much anymore, but when it started it was unusual for half the freezer section in Tesco to be entirely empty)

In my opinion, panic buying would be when you buy at least 2 times more than you'd normally use until your next shop. Recognizing temporary shortages means, in my opinion, adapting to what's available and/or sourcing the items needed from alternative places (like someone mentioned greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers).

I'll fess up that a couple of times in early to mid 2020 I did that. If it had been 4 (weekly) shops since I'd seen Item X (non perishable), I'd buy double item X next time I saw it so I didn't run out again. Not like, buying 30kg of pasta. More like, I use a lot of tomato puree in my cooking, so when I went six weeks without finding any, I bought several next time I saw it. (And then used it until it ran out before buying more)
