Full disclosure I am probably as much to blame but,

Just buying anything now seems to be a fecking nightmare.

There's never just one option there's a hundred.

Then the reviews are difficult to get one that's not biased because it's sponsored.

Then who from,so many retailers and....

Omg it does my nut in.

We are currently looking for a new oven the choice is baffling.

I'm never one for spur of the moment purchases and I always regret it if I do.

Please tell me I'm not alone and a complete loon?

Mrs agonises over everything.

I just immediately pick the one that meets my criteria. Then the important bit is to NEVER consider it again. Otherwise you'll go mad considering what you could have gotten

Its horrendous isnt it. So much stuff is made by competing companies that all does the same thing as good as but has used all those resources to make it unnecessarily.

You're definitely not alone. I normally research the hell out of anything before I buy

I’m terrible. I buy the first thing I see that’s within my budget and hardly ever look at reviews, probably why I end up sending the things I buy back all the time

What did we do before online reviews etc? We just went to the shop, looked at the things, maybe asked questions or read a brochure (yes, now digital) and then made a decision. We seemed to cope. Maybe just ignore all the online guff and hit the shops. Look at some ovens and pick the shiniest/most energy efficient/biggest/smallest/double/ single or whatever other criteria you have.

We recently bought a new tumble dryer. The only set criteria were it should not require venting and it should not be super expensive. We picked the second one we looked at and had it delivered within a few days. It's absolutely cracking and we're very happy with it. Not a clue what the online reviews say about it.

Yep, just had to replace my washing machine, "Thumbelina" - half the size of a standard washing machine, washing 3kg of clothes at a time. It was probably 20 years old, possibly more - got it from my late grandmother. Problem wasn't the machine but the door fell apart.

I'm still grieving for it, even after replacing with a shiny new model, washing 8kg at a time with all these fancy wash cycles, weighing the laundry, using only what's absolutely needed - but dreading how long this modern, computerised, digitised, technology will last (I hate it, I want Thunbelina back!!!)

How many options are there for an oven though?

Double or single, do they go up to 9, is it fan assisted.

They are all pretty much the same.

I have the same problem. We also had to buy a new oven a year or two back. I decided to use AO as they've always been good. Once you know the size you want, the energy efficiency etc you can rule some out. Then I just looked at any bad reviews to see what sort of problems they can have, and eventually blindly pick one that's affordable. It's not the best system, but it can feel overwhelming when you've never had to decide on a new appliance before.

It was much easier when I first bought the house and went to a physical shop to get a microwave and fridge freezer. I just picked the ones that were the right size and price

Spot on, everything is so overcomplex (and seems bound to pack up just outside warranty), I was looking at bean-to-cup coffee makers yesterday, briefly, whyever do they need lcd touchscreens, bluetooth and a multitude of functions? Anyway their marketing plan went wrong there, as it all put me off buying one completely.

The worst thing is, so many of them are basically the same anyway. It's an illusion of choice. I've been redecorating, and it's all well and good having 1000 versions of whatever, but 899 of them are functionally indistinguishable and 50 more are barely different.

We have far too much shite and I hate it.

Never be a spur of the moment purchaser , they seldom ever work out , take your time and get the best for you ,both financially and purpose

. Saved so many during the recession here in Ireland, people said they'd never shop there but 2/3 weeks later they were , great value & quality.

We shopped for a new mattress recently. Thought it would be a simple process so looked online...... bloody hell! Hiw many variations of a mattress are there?

Ended up jumping in the car and driving to a showroom. Spent about an hour physically lying down on every mattress they had. Couldn't buy the one we felt was the best as it was over £6000! Ended up with one that was really comfortable and wasn't ridiculously priced.

We did try one that we'd seen online and thought looked great for the price. It was one the most uncomfortable mattresses I've ever laid down on so good choice to go to the shop.

Exactly this. It’s called ‘Built-in obsolescence’. So pre-internet, people would just go to a shop and buy something, but not, manufactures don’t build things to last. So you’re kind of forced to do your research to ensure that the one you’re buying lasts as long as possible.

I suffer from research-addiction and can’t stand it when something breaks! I just want something to last. It’s an infuriating part of modern life that things just break and are hard/expensive to fix. We have enough stresses in our lives without having to constantly worry about every product in our house from suddenly dying/cracking/falling apart/wearing out…
