im brand new to a job (not that we are doing anything) i get struck down with this cold thing thats doing the rounds and im in my 2nd week and already in that crap position of taking time off.

im dreading it lasting 4 weeks like some people are experiencing it for because i cant afford too and secondly it will pretty much guarentee i'll loose my job the end of probation.

i work in healthcare and although there are no clients im well aware of the risks of how quick these bugs get passed on so do not want to wipe out the workforce with illness but selfishly i need to earn.

arghhhhh. i know its not thursday but im torn up, frustrated and feeling crap.

I am in same position kinda...I was ill over Xmas and then this weekend I collapsed. Luckily I was home. I went to doctors yesterday and he said it is my cough that is causing me to faint....

I have been signed off till Monday and given steroids....work even told me to log on even though I,have a return to work certificate

I'd do the same. Show willing and let them see how poorly I am. Can always ask to do work well away from others if not sent home.

When you are genuinely sick you should stay at home, with the law behind you. But unfortunately since the 80s and a woman who I will not mention the companies have had the whip hand. And the poor employee (slave) suffers.

Feel for you here cute, I've not had a day off sick in 8yrs cos I don't get sick pay so every day off costs me ! The differance is if I go work I don't risk killing the client.

Health cares a toughie your working round sometimes sick folk and always at risk of picking up colds or worse , but colds can last weeks or months ,you get rid of one and another starts .

I'd take paracetamol and try and plod on .....x

I hope your employers have informed you that as a healthcare worker (NHS or private) you are entitled to a free flu jab every season. Well worth remembering.

Infact, there are numerous inoculation's that you're entitled to for free. Make sure they make you aware of them.

sounds like u answerd your own question, if its that serious , i agree with wheels tho i would of gone in no matter what, and got sent home. esp as its a new job, but i never have time off work ill or not. hope u feel better soon x

The only time I had a prolonged eg a few days off work was when I had swine flu.

This was because I worked for a company that produced herbs and packed all herbs you will find in supermarkets.

However my office was not near the factory or warehouse, however as one of my staff members had come in with swine flu and therefore passed it on, not only to me, there was always times when picker packers had to come not only into the main office but mine and for health & safety reasons I stayed off until the incubation period was complete.

I still worked from home, beauty of my job, I can log in wherever and I am always accessible.

Even when I broke my leg in 3 places over the Christmas period 2002, I had to stay in hospital for a few days due to operations, I got my staff to bring work to me

Then I organised a staff member to collect me from home when I needed to be in the office as I couldn't drive and climbed up at least 40 stairs on crutches to get to my then office.

Takes a lot for me to take time off.

Whoever said that employers have the whip now, is not correct, employee sickness levels are high and widely abused.

It is very hard to prove that someone is just chucking a sickie and companies lose millions every year through people doing so.

You don't need a sick note from your GP until after your 5th day of sickness, self certify until then.

If there are no patients, who are you gonna kill?

Surely its better to dose up and go in and make sure you pass your probation? Long term it would be good for you, preferable than being back on benefits and looking for work again?!

take the advice from your manager, rest and return to work. they have been flexible and honoured your leave over the christmas period, they will appreciate if they recruit at this time of year there will be illness during any probationary period. ensure you catch up with any mandatory training that your absence from work may have cost, ensure punctuality and good conduct. they may all play part of the consideration for signing you off as a permanent member of the team.

I think that most of your colleagues will have some form of the cold by now, and those that don't will in all likelyhood get it soon enough.

If I was your employer I would be looking at this period to gauge who amongst you has the committment for the future and who hasn't, I would suggest that you dose yourself up with paracetamol snd go in to work and therby force your employers to make that decision to send you home or not.

I very rarely take time off. I had 6 days off post op in august and 2 weeks off post op (open appendectomy) in April. I think I'm just used to going to work not feeling great. I still give 100% and unless I've got d&v I don't take time off. (That's government guidelines when working with kids and vulnerable adults) If my endometriosis is very bad I take a day off but that's because you can't drive on tramadol.

New job, got a cold, if it were me I'd be in showing willing and as there's no clients in you're only likely to give it to colleagues.

Im going in tomorrow definitely. Today is my first day off sick, im fortunate that while there are no clients in to a certain extent as long as my contracted hours are 'worked' i can do them whenever.

Use today to rest and recover as best you can-eat lots of healthy yummies to give your system a bit of a boost, stock up on cold meds and if work don't supply it, get some anti-bac gel to show your colleagues how considerate you are of them.

Plus have a really luxurious hot bath with loadsa bubbles to give your head some relief and sweat it out!

Hope you feel better-I'm on week 4 of my cough and cold and it's not nice but it does get better!

ta crystal, i feel im over the worst of it. my voice is back to normal ish, just got the chesty cough that i dread cos i pulled something during a coughing fit the other night and luckily the runny nose is now a blocked one. (i sound so dam attractive lol)

im in higher spirits than i was over the weekend when i first got it. Turned all my heating off, got a window open for fresh air circulation, im wrapped up warm and got lots of fruit and water with lemsips and strepsils to hand.

Glad you're in high spirits! I'm positively pissed off with my cold/flu/cough/sinusitis bug. I coughed so hard I vomited... tasty!

And week 4 I'm finally feeling like I've got my own head back-not one that's rammed full of gunk!

Suck it up, dose yourself up like other posters have said, as a manager i would be looking at whos had time off and for what, a simple cold wouldnt cut it im afraid, there are so many over the counter remedies now to help with symptoms, go in and show willing, then they can see if you are struggling and make the decision on whether to send you home or not, if its not busy like you say they wont hesitate, if training you wont be coming into contact with any body you could put at risk from "life or death". Good luck.

i vomited on Sunday night because of the coughing fit, that's when i pulled a muscle somewhere internally (still suffering with that)

I hope it doesn't last 3/4 weeks but friends locally who have it have had it for that kind of time period also. Get well soon

Surely all elderly people have flu/pneumonia jabs? If not all of you have CRB checks you shouldnt be dealing with patients anyway. I understand what you are saying but its a cold, not swine flu, not the norovirus, jobs are too hard to come by. There are proceedures in place to help stop the spread of infection also i presume, all i am saying is as a manager i wouldnt take it lightly that you have time off sick in a probationary period.

Just check with your manager how it will affect your probation period. I know when I was a manager we had to look at absence records but we also had some discretion over it.

Also record that you were told not to come in.Mention it in tour rreturn to work, note it on any forms you have to sign, you never know if that will be a useful piece of information or not.

Sadly most companies these days have very strict absence policies not least because they know they can fill vacancies easily. Might be slightly different in your job due to training etc.

Most companies also make it hard for people to go off sick because they don't pay sick pay. People can't afford to lose the money so go in infecting everyone else.

For me, if it was as I said something like swine flu then yes definitely stay off.

A cold nope, as long as you are taking measuring to prevent passing it on, e.g. washing hands, binning dirty tissues straight away etc

Not sure if it's the same with the elderly but I know with young children there are prescribed absence periods following illness that have to be followed. My friend recently got diagnosed with whooping cough and had to check with the LA to see when she could go back to work, despite the fact that most children these days are innoculated against it

Also food manufacturers/picker packers also take this policy.

From my knowledge of CRB etc you can't be given employment in a situation whereby you are to come into contact with a child or vulnerable adult if you haven't had CRB clearance. But that's digressing.

I've had a stuffy nose and cough for a few weeks, it doesn't stop me teaching. Yesterday my endo was bad but I took my painkiller and went in with a heat pad.

I have worked since I was 16 and to me taking time off impacts on my colleagues (or now I am self employed my students)

It's 48 hours following d&v with kids and there are notifiable illnesses. I'm sure it's the same with vulnerable adults.

To everyone who is unwell, get well soon.

I'd like to count my blessings for having 100% attendance record since August 2005.

I keep a stock of paracetamol, Sudafed and Pholcodine Linctus at the ready in case I need them, and always need to check their expiry date as I seldom need to take them.

Don't have time to be ill as there is so much to do.

I remember bunking off an hour early once in the last 3 years to go home to have a good sleep and went back to work the next day.

Long may my good health continue.

Taking time off sick is always a worry - but your doing the right thing.

It doesn't matter if your in direct or indirect contact with the patients/clients - it only takes the one person to come into contact with you while ill to pass it onto someone else, to then pass it onto a patient by proxy. Then they could come down with your illness or a case of deadness.

I was an IT tech for the NHS and the rule we had was if you were ill - and if it was infectious - you stayed away until you were better.

You've already done the smart thing by calling your boss, who's already told you there's more than just you that have gone down with it - so your not alone there. Just be sure that when your back in to be seen to be working harder and standing out better than the others

I would speak with your manager and express your concerns to them, e.g. that you think the time will go against you when the end of your probationary period arrives. They may be sympathetic towards you because of your concerns and it shows you are willing to work.

Are there are any tasks you can do away from the building, e.g. administrative tasks? If so, ask can you do that.

Your place of work will be visited by many strangers: visitors, relatives, suppliers & tradesman over the next few months & years. You may be recognised by fellow swingers who work there or any of the above, my sincere advice is be careful what you post on public forums about your place of work, your performance/attendance and anything job related. Many have internet/social networking conditions and that maybe worth double checking.

If they know members of their team are on facebook etc etc, it is not unknown for them to check for updates during periods of absence. Some and I repeat some may have a dim _iew of swinging. I have had reports of people attending festivals during sick leave and that came from fellow workers who were pissed off.

Now that is genuine advice to you and any others.

Others may have a different _iew and I respect that

I've taken someone to disciplinary before because they went on a works might out bowling when they called in sick

I've also called someone for a routine duty of care call because they called in sick and I wasn't available to talk to only to find out they were clearing their hangover by walking the dogs

A friend of mine was hauled in the office because she had been signed off with stress bit posted on fb about being in London. This one was a bit unfair as she had been signed off for weeks ans was told to relax etc so took a day out.

The longest time I have had off sick was 4 weeks when I had my miscarriage..Not once did I get a phone call to see if I was ok.. However I don't phone in sick unless I am sick.. I know people who do it when they have run out of A/L...

If I can drag myself out of bed, then I shall drag myself to work.

For me personally, cold symptoms can be reduced to bearable level by taking a couple of Paracetamol 500mg tablets and 1 x 60mg Sudafed tablet every 6 hours, plus some Pholcodine Lintus if there is a dry cough.

There are always jobs and tasks to do at work. I prefer to support my colleagues rather than to let them down. They would appreciate my presence if when I am not operating at full capacity.

I would rather be at work than to mope around the house watching day time TV or be online and fish for sympathy.

i have to drag myself out of bed, i am a parent. i am dosed up on honey and glycerine, lemsips and taking that rancid carvonia (ya know that cough medicine with clout)

As I said earlier in this thread I'm not one or taking time off, I went back to work 2 weeks after Dad died but did take off the time we had with him after his diagnosis. I think there's been a few posts that have been a little harsh on Cute who was asking for advice (and perhaps I was one of them, I have been known to be forthright with my _iews before) I just wanted to say Cute I really hope you feel better soon and that you're well enough to go into work, I know how much you were looking forward to starting your new job and I can understand your concern about taking time off.

What a load of rubbish! The law is already on your side so no need to pay a union fees and get little back.

I work for a major company who is a Conservative party contributor, there is little union representation for the workers because we don't need it!

We are all paid well and get great company benefits, one of which I currently get. As I am unable to work due to a series of back problems, the company will pay me until I am 65! Which just goes to show pick a good company to work for in the first place!

I entirely agree and it is not clever of any employee to add you to fb or other such social sites and then post during sickness of them gallivanting about

Also an ex employee, hence I say ex used to live 100 yards away from my old house, when I worked at home very easy to see what she is was up to as her car was in _iew, which she did not take into consideration!!!

I don't take time off work and I wouldn't have for a cold especially in a probationary period.

You said it earlier Cute, you have no option to get up and look after your little girl, there's no indecision about that, it has to happen. That's the work attitude that I have and the ethic that most employers are looking for.

When you say things like, you worry about passing it on and you hope it doesn't last 4 weeks, then it sounds as if your putting hurdles there to.

I am in no way saying you are not ill, these colds do make you feel dreadful and you genuinely want to flop down, but in a probationary period I would go in and muddle through. I wouldn't have made the call to the manager, I'd have just gone in.

Just imagine how your employers could _iew this, a woman who hasn't been working for a while, starts work and then shortly afterwards goes off sick. It just doesn't look good, no matter how understanding the manager might let you believe its ok.

Just be careful on this.

Unfortunately it is because of people who swing the lead that legitimately ill people get penalised. My assistant went off long term sick with stress for 6 months, and magically got better just as her wages were about to be halved. My ex nearly lost his foot in an accident and had to be off work for 6 months and got a written warning when he got back.

And its nothing to do with public sector vs private sector. The rules are now the same across the board. More than 14 days sick leave a year = warning.

Lots of companies are changin their sickness policies. In my job we don't get paid for the 1st 2 days so some are crawelin into work then passin their germs lol. Also if u are off 3 seperate times in a year u get a warnin. This happend to me. The 1st time I was off I had been kicked black and blue by a service user. I went back for a week then had a minor op. Then caught a bug. People are scared to be off sick now.

Taking single days off several times a year is frowned upon - our company uses a system called the bradford system (I think) which looks at days off sick - if you're off twice in a year for 3 days that's ok but if oyu're off for 6 single days you'd be asked questions! I wouldn't ever take time off for a common cold -new job or old - but definitely not when just started! Especially if you're well enough to be on line all day instead of being poorly in bed! Z

I hope you feel better soon. It's not easy. You are new and still an unknown quantity at your new workplace. Your pre-booked leave was honoured but it does mean you missed that crucial getting to know you stage that everyone else went through together.

You are without clients to care for at the moment and your manager may well be genuinely caring and have nothing but your welfare at heart. To whom does your manager report and will they _iew things in the same way?

I look for patterns and overall conduct during the probation period. Absence, for whatever reason, is noted. It takes time and money to recruit people so I don't want to add to long term costs by keeping someone who I can't rely on. I have terminated before the end of probation for persistent absence.

I do take the _iews of my managers into consideration but my role is to make those final decisions.

There is a programme on Ch4 now on sharing too much on Facebook. Follow View's advice - he knows what he is talking about.

I have been reading this post with interest as I am off sick at the moment.

I was struck down with a virus on the Saturday before New Year, very sore throat, fever, headaches. I was due to return to work on 2nd January but was still very ill, so phoned my doctors made an emergency appointment and advised my work. The doctor confirmed I had a virus and advised total bed rest and dosing up on Ibubrofen etc

My Manager was very sympathetic having had the same virus before/during Christmas and was off sick for 2 weeks herself. She advised that she didn't expect me to return until yesterday.

I had full intention of returning to work yesterday but still felt very ill and was suffering other not so nice symptoms so again made an emergency appointment with my doctor who diagnosed a respiratory throat infection, gave me a course of anti-biotics, signed me off work for 5 days and advised if I wasn't feeling better by Thursday to call him.

I don't take time off work with a cold and will usually plod on but can honestly say that this virus has knocked me for six .... there is no way I could do my job properly even if I had gone in.

I will have to see what reaction I get when I return to work next Monday but I'm hoping all will be ok

Hope all that are ill at the moment get better soon xx

I hope all is ok when you return to work. If you are a valued member of staff and have never taken advantage then I am sure all will be well. I had someone off work for two months with a virus once but I knew they were genuinely ill and feeling bad for letting the team down.

Hate to be the party pooper to all that are now on the 4th week of this cold but my friend who is our local practice nurse was telling me that it is known as the 8 week cold when I mentioned I couldn't get rid of runny nose and chesty cough, but your not contiguous after the first five days,least I was lucky enough to come down with it when I'd broken up for Christmas, hope everyone is feeling better soon xx

Zenith I know that feeling mine started the week before Xmas o the Monday and then I have had it nearly a month....

Went to doctors 2nd time on Monday to be given steroids and signed off work...only after I had collapsed on Sunday and started shaking in office on Monday...

Truet me I had dosed my self with flu tablets and vapour rub it just didn't touch me

You should have gone in to work and let them see how ill you are and send you home. The onus is transferred directly to them then. Back it up with a dr's note and you're in the clear.

Back on topic. I guess there are skivers and strivers. I have taken time off when sick, but I have had to be too ill to make the 30 mile drive work to do so. I am conscious of the pressure it puts on my colleagues when I am not there!

Human beings by their very nature, occasionally become ill. We're not androids. If I'm absent for WHATEVER reason for three days, in any twelve month period, a disciplinary process begins. I've argued with them, that they're actively encouraging you to come to work ill, by doing this.

Obviously don't get paid, either.

obviously there are some people on here who think that being ill is not allowed and those that take time off when they are ill are just shirkers!!

I can honestly say that I used to be one of those people who worked with whatever illness I came down with and even when I had my hysterectomy, after a week was working from home as I knew there was no one to do my job.

My attitude changed when I had a heart attack 2 years ago .... made me realise how precious life was.

Your employer may insist that you go into work but I bet they won't be stood around your grave if you drop dead!!!

Sorry for the rant but just makes my blood boil when people obviously think that we pull a fast one just for a sniffle!!

Quick update.... my toe is still sore and I am still on crutches. My boss has awarded me Employee of the Month for bravery and commitment to the cause... so was well worth going to work. Free frothy coffee and a KitKat as a reward... I feel humbled by the acknowledgments of my peers.

I work in healthcare to but i always go to work no matter hoW ill i am. If they dont pay us sick pay then how can we take time off. Thats my take on it. Go bak to work sweety xx
