Apparently supermarkets are now rationing tomatoes and the allowance will only be 3 tomatoes per person, not just tomatoes, but cucumbers and lettuce are currently hard to come by as well, in some supermarkets customers are facing empty shelves, it seems that it is not just supermarkets, even italian restaurants are also being forced to ration tomatoes, they are even considering to serve pizzas without tomatoes.

Why do you think that there is a shortage of tomatoes and how do you think that they can check so that a person only gets 3? I wonder how they will be able to check it

Why? It’s two-fold tbh. Firstly The B word. European shelves still contain tomatoes. Not only are there barriers to importation - we no longer have the source of EU casual labourers to pick them.

Secondly - in the UK the big supermarkets are in charge - they dictate the price they’re willing to pay and the growers/farmers have to suck it up. It’s telling that the government have called in the supermarkets rather than the actual uk producers to discuss the shortages!

However - due to increasing energy costs etc, and the issue with picking the produce (above) producers can no longer make a profit at the prices the supermarkets are willing to pay - so there are hundreds of empty ‘super greenhouses’ up and down the country.

Sadly I think these problems are only going to get worse. The supermarkets may be f*rced to change the way they do business in this area - but that won’t undo Brexit and bring back free movement of products and labour.

Seeing fields of cabbages lying rotting is obscene and purely down to Brexit but at least the government are loosening immigration rules for the building sector who historically have been one of the Tory parties largest donors eh..

The shelves across Spain and Europe are full to bursting with fresh produce including tomatoes. Holland is saying it has too many tomatoes.

It's entirely due to Brexit. The Tory government know this but will never admit it. They can't blame Covid or Putin anymore (the supermarket shelves near the war zone are packed apparently). On Twitter there are literally hundreds of photo's of stores across Europe's supermarkets at breaking point with fresh veg.

Europe and the rest of the world are laughing at the UK and the totally fictitious Tory stories that the steeple here are still falling for.

Roll on the next general election.

Before things and stuff...... we didn't eat tomatoes in winter cos it was natural NOT to have any.

This news is 3 weeks old.

Main reason for the shortage is cold weather in Spain and North Africa reducing the crop. Secondary reason, high energy prices meaning farms in U.K. and Netherlands not heating greenhouses to force grown additional stocks.

Short term supply issues. I went to Sainsburys yesterday and they had plenty of everything. We had the worst supplies about 10 days ago, but you could still get everything if you went to a market or farm shop, the supermarkets were having the worst issues, made worse by idiots panic buying following media attention.

I hate to break it to you, but Brexit is WAY down the list of reasons why we had the shortage. There were shortages across many countries in Europe. Not just the U.K.

The weather was the primary reason. Reducing the crop significantly. Morocco actually restricted export of fruit and veg to maintain domestic supplies. The reduced crop from southern Europe went to the highest bidders. British supermarkets are notoriously aggressive in their pricing and so they were way down the priority list for the supplies that were available.

France and Spain still had great supplies because it is domestic, but people in Northern Europe were experiencing similar issues to us.

I’m no Brexiteer but I’m also unhappy when people blame absolutely everything on Brexit.

I live in Spain. Some prices have gone up here as inflation has risen across Europe. Also, there's been a reduced harvest for some crops due to the weather.

BUT

There's no shortage of salad vegetables here.

Brexit has made the import of such things into the UK overly bureaucratic and expensive so people here are less inclined to do it.

Less vegetables overall, but not less in the shops here.

I think we need to look at the expectation to have tomatoes, cucumbers etc out of season. If you buy cabbages, root veg like carrots/ parsnips etc this time of year, you can still feed yourself in a healthy and affordable manner.

I said before, I absolutely love tomatoes but even I can manage without them out of season. Let's get back to eating more seasonal and more local food would be a better idea than chasing tomatoes at such an inflated price.

Yes, it might be due to the weather. I also did wonder if this tomatoe shortage was due to the brexit tax, so the waiting time might be a longer wait for it

I been involved farming all my life nothing to do with brexit all to do with supermarkets driving price down no long term contract to growers etc. If imported stuff a penny cheaper will drop any supplier over night.

With high gas prices lots greenhouse left empty in this country as too risky to grow with no safe contract

So, the shelves are now full of tomatoes and cucumbers again.

So, IF it was Brexit, why was it only affecting us for a couple of weeks.

For the poster who lives in Spain saying they had produce. That’s the whole thing. The crops were short so they were only selling domestically, not exporting.

We can’t grow tomatoes in the winter so rely on imports.

You can, but either the cost of energy is prohibitive or where farms have Solar, they are getting better prices for the exported energy than the profit and hassle of growing them here!!

Asda are or were rationed meat pastes to 3 per person but I needed 4… the self service til refused to talk to me about it so I was with the compromise, but 3 get one free
