Somewhere In The Ether…

….who you secretly (or not so secretly, maybe) rooted for.

Yes! Sometimes the hero is a bit bland which makes you actually side with the antagonist instead (Kevin Costner Vs Alan Rickman in Robin Hood - I’m looking at YOU!)

Sometimes the villain is misunderstood (such as Michael Douglas in Falling Down) and sometimes you are just damned well plain rooting for the bad guy from the start (Gerard Butler in Law Abiding Citizen - although was he really the villain?).

List me all your examples good folks

Commodore Beckett from Pirates of the Caribbean

Upstanding naval commander who does his duty against pirates. If you only saw his side of the story he'd be the hero of the film but we all know that Captain Jack Sparrow and Co are the heroes.

That and Tom. Jerry was an antagonistic little shit.

Hannibal Lecter, Brian Cox was good, Anthony Hopkins was great but Mads Mikkelson was fantastic.

Skeletor - Masters of the Universe

It’s not a great film. But my goodness is the performance of Frank Langella (who you might recognise as playing Nixon in ‘Frost/Nixon’) epic!

Somewhere In The Ether…

Freddy Krueger: If one stops to analyse the fictional, horrific historical crimes against children this antagonist has committed in the film series, one may quite rightly, feel quite appalled at oneself for actually rooting for him in the films.

….but Robert England played the character so delightfully that you just can’t help it

Somewhere In The Ether…

Vikings: Virtually all the characters in this excellent series performed at least some morally reprehensible or else underhanded and dastardly deeds at some point and yet, I couldn’t but help to root for such charismatic miscreants as Harold Fine Hair, Rolo and even Ivar The Boneless at the very end.

Bradford

Roy Batty in Blade Runner.

He was just looking for answers as to how to live longer and couldn't control his very immature emotions leading to anger... Until the final scene where he looses all anger and loves life for the precious fragile gift it is.

Johnny Lawrence. Poor guy just wanted to reconcile with his girlfriend before this nerd got a white knight complex, beat him in a Karate tournament with an illegal kick and ruined his life forever.

I always kind of rooted for Kreese to; a delightfully hissable bad boy

I missed thee! I was worried that my romantic attempt to cook for you drove you away (after you recovered from the after effects) I hereby do solemnly promise never to subject you to my culinary horrors ever again

Cheshire

I prefer my heroes to be flawed characters, like Harvey Keitel in Bad Lieutenant (the masturbation scene especially) or Bob Hoskins in The Long Good Friday.

My favourite bad guy is Michael Caine in Get Carter, he’s just perfect as the imperfect Jack Carter.
