I’m not even sure if that’s what you would call it. Sometimes I’ll have an unpleasant dream that I am aware of. I feel totally awake during it but I can’t move any part of my body to wake myself up out of it. Sometimes it feels like there’s a ton of bricks on my chest and I can’t breathe. It’s really scary and it freaks my husband out because he says I make loud whimpering noises and he has to wake me up most of the time.

I was just curious to see whether anyone has experienced it. It doesn’t happen too often and I’m not sure what triggers it either. I hope that made some sort of sense

I used to get it at least once a week. I honestly don’t know what changed to stop it. I wish I knew what the trigger was.

You have my utmost sympathy though. It was terrifying.

I've had this too. I either wake up and can see the bedroom but I can't move and feel that there is something in the room with me, or depending on quite how awake I am at the time see things that aren't there, or I'm having a nightmare but am aware of it and in both scenarios try to wake myself up by screaming, which comes out as whimpering. If R notices he will then properly wake me up. Its very odd when it happens but thankfully doesn't happen as much as it used to.

It used to happen quite a bit a few years ago then and it stopped but recently it’s started happening quite a bit again and it is really scary!

I’m glad you don’t have to go through it anymore

Yes!, this is similar to what happens to me. Last night I felt as though someone was chucking water over my face while sitting on my chest and it feels so real. I can hear myself screaming in my dream trying to wake myself up and it’s terrifying that you can’t.

I have this as part of narcolepsy, it’s also know as riding the witch as lots of people also see/feel a presence around them. It’s horrible and really scary at the time.

The best thing is not to fight it, although I still do after 20years of suffering from it. It happens because you are asleep but your brain is still active

That was last year, I usually just have bizzare dreams but nothing I'd say is a bad dream but that definitely made up for not having any bad dreams for as long as I can remember

I used to get night terrors. I would wake up screaming. I did used to get out the bed though, thinking there was rats in there most of the time. Once I got my then 3 year old out of bed and nearly took him out the house.

I never get them now and never knew what caused them but most occurred when I was in an abusive marriage so maybe stress xx

I use to get this a lot and was never 100% sure why but something that crossed my mind at a later date was i think it use to happen more often when I had a bad sleep schedule and either over slept or didn't get enough sleep

Now I get around 7hrs on average and wake up at the crack of dawn to exercise and have never had it since

Unfortunately I don't think there's anything can do to stop it, a soft light like a salt rock lamp for when wake would help a little so you know you're awake and there's nothing there

I used to suffer from this a lot a few years ago but thankfully episodes have been few and far between lately.

I have a feeling they are triggered by stress or sometimes overheating in bed.

I hate the feeling you get when you eventually wake up fully too...so disoriented and panicked..

I've only ever had this once and it was the scariest thing I've ever had. The weight on my chest pinning me down unable to move but I was sure there was someone on top of me even felt like I could feel their breath on my face.

When I woke up and could move I got up to check there was no one in the house as I was positive I had been held down by a person.

Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences it’s helped me feel a bit more sane

I’m not a great sleeper and find it hard to drift off into a deep sleep , I’m also a little stress head so I think it’s probably a combination of the both.

Hopefully I can stop terrifying myself and my husband in the middle of the night whaling like a banshee

I think the scariest part for me is being so aware that dreams feel so real. Also feeling like you’re gasping for air isn’t fun either. I know the feeling

Oh wow I am glad I read this thread. This is something that has happened about 4 times to me this last year, getting more frequent. I find myself in some mild peril in a dream that just becomes foreboding and then I am stuck being unable to move usually lying on my back, but in the dream I know I need to make someone wake me to leave the dream, so I try calling out in the dream which is really hard to get out. But I am actually muffled calling out for real and it keeps terrifying my kids who have to come and wake me up. When I realise im safe through the grog I just burst into tears! My brain is getting more creative at waking me up maybe because of inner guilt at scaring the kids so last time I managed to jolt myself bolt awake and last nights terrifying episode actually made me wet myself (tmi everyone sorry) which is a guaranteed way to wake me up! (Not since I was about 6 have I peed the bed) So yes, I am a wonderful bed companion at the moment. Have never had it before but can probably pinpoint which monsters are weighing on my soul but not really sure how to make it stop.

Aww I’m so sorry that you’ve had it happen to you as well I have been reading about it today and sleeping on your back can cause it. Thankyou x. I thought it was because I was on my back so have propped myself on both sides and it happens that way too, funny because in the dream I can sense which way I am lying and are frozen in that position in the dream. I am blaming hormones for most of it I think, will see if I can get the pill or hrt or something.

I call it double dreaming or hyper real dreaming. I wake up in the dream and believe I’m awake but I’m not. I at first thought it was painkiller related from when I first broke my neck, opiates, however even when not taking them I still get it.

Not nice at all and sometimes it upsets me as I wake up to find my parents are alive , then of course wake up again for real and of course they aren’t.

I used to have it a fair bit but it's very rare for me now.

I think it's possible that some people who think they're experiencing a ghostly visit, have some aspects of sleep paralysis, as they can be in a transitional state between sleeping and wakefulness.

I suffer with this, usually when I'm sleep deprived. When it first happened I thought I was possesed and need to stop watching scary paranormal movies . Thankfully it made me feel better once I learned what it was. The odd thing for me is that I'm an atheist yet to wake myself up from them I have to say " Help me jesus"

Scary stuff, hugs to all those who suffer

For me this has got to be the scariest thing that has ever happened to me, and it's been happening since probably my early twenties. I can't breath in, can't breath out. I try and force my head to lift off my pillow, and when I do wake up from this,it has scared me that much there's no going back to sleep. I find it only happens to me if I have fallen asleep on my back or at least that's the position I wake up in.

Has anybody ever died from this? I have never looked in to it?
