I've read it. Boilerplate anti-semitic theories mixed with pretty standard anti-Communistic, anti-corporation, blood and soil nationalism. He's read, and misunderstood, most major German philosophers, and assorted them according to some incredibly simplistic take on Nietzsche's theory of the Übermensch.

If he'd been born 100 years later he'd have been posting on subreddit and 8chan.

I remember an undergraduate student using all the quotes of this book, replaced the word Jews by Muslims and asked ppl if they agree or disagree with the statements…

Most were agreeing with them !

So fuck yes it is an important book in that context because it shows how ppl can easily fall into hatred !

Possibly the most turgid book I have ever read.

If you read it it is going to be several hours of your life you are never going to get back.

I agree with Elephantis' assessment.

Perfect. I think you've summarised it perfectly.

Im tempted to give it a go now. Just to see how he twisted everything.

But if i do, i dont think ill be reading it on the train to work.

Maybe ill put a Harry Potter sleeve over the cover.

Have you ever watched Father Ted winning the golden cleric award and going on a long tedious rant punctuated with “needless to say I had the last laugh” ?

That’s about it - the quality of writing is equivalent to that of a sulky fifth former.

To critique the subject matter would be to afford it some credibility and therefore sensible folk don’t waste their time doing so.

This.

I found it painful to read. That doesn't mean you shouldn't. (In fact I might get my hands on a copy and reread it, I think it's sadly relevant these days)

Why did you REALLY post this question here ?

There are many reviews of this work online. You'd be best reading some of those , engaging critically and then making your own decision as to whether you want to read it or not.

What is it you are engaging with that brought Mein Kampf into your path ?

I started reading it many years ago. I think about the first 15 pages were quite interesting and written well. Then he suddenly launched into a tirade about Jews which came from nowhere, after which the book became so unhinged I couldn't carry on. There was no logical case that he walked us through. It was just a massive rant.

It is a significant book historically so if you're interested then go ahead and read it, but please don't start thinking he has a point.

I've not read it, but it's one of those books which, given this day & age, still resonates with a lot of those in extremist groups.

With the rise of anti-semitism again, it may be worth heeding the warnings of history.

It's frightening how a book full of simplistic theories and unhinged hatred of Jews influenced such a large chunk of Germany's population at the time.

Sadly, with the amount of gullible dumbasses in the UK and US today, who agree with and believe anything that suits their own agenda and prejudices (and yes, that includes fake news and conspiracy theories), it looks like that part of history could be revisited here - though, hopefully, not in my time.

My nan’s spare room.

I’ve considered reading it, I then thought how could I possibly benefit from doing so, came to the decision that I couldn’t.

That’s not stating that it’s not important to understand how such a despot can rise to power, because if we don’t understand that it can happen again, but reading the book doesn’t help me do that.

Go for The Thursday Murder Club instead.

Just wanted to get prospective from real people, there's probably fake reviews online by people who have the wrong agenda.

While binge watching YouTube i came across a video about Irma Grese, in 1945 she became the youngest ever SS gaurd to face the death penalty for war crimes at 22.

So led me down the path on what made her become brain washed into doing the evil & heinous stuff she did.

That led me to mein kampf

Here are some reasons why you should and should not read "Mein Kampf,":

Reasons why you should read "Mein Kampf":

Historical importance: "Mein Kampf" is an important historical document that offers insight into the thinking and beliefs of Adolf Hitler, who rose to power in Germany and led the country into World War II.

Understanding extremism: By reading "Mein Kampf," you can gain a deeper understanding of the ideology of the Nazi party and the extreme views that led to the Holocaust and other atrocities committed during World War II.

Intellectual curiosity: If you are interested in history, politics, or psychology, reading "Mein Kampf" may satisfy your intellectual curiosity and provide you with a greater understanding of the events that shaped the 20th century.

Reasons why you should not read "Mein Kampf":

Offensive content: "Mein Kampf" contains offensive and hateful content, including anti-Semitic and racist views, that may be deeply upsetting and disturbing to some readers.

Propaganda: "Mein Kampf" is essentially a piece of propaganda that promotes Hitler's ideology and is full of false and misleading information.

Dangerous ideas: The ideas presented in "Mein Kampf" are dangerous and have been used to justify genocide and other atrocities. Reading this book could potentially expose you to these ideas and contribute to the normalization of hate and extremism.

In conclusion, while "Mein Kampf" is an important historical document, it should be read with caution and only by those who are prepared to confront its offensive and dangerous content.

For a look into contemporary extremism, I would look at books like Snyder's The Road to Unfreedom, the books of Steven Hassan on cults and mind control, Will Sommer "Trust the Plan" and similar.

It might be more helpful if current understanding is your goal, although there's certainly considerable overlap with the ideas in Mein Kampf.

OP, I could also recommend a channel on the old Choob of You, a guy called Mark Felton. He has some really interesting videos on WW2 history, and one recently about how Hitler ended up in power in the first place. Well worth a watch.

As for the book, I gave up a short way in, as stated before it is very dry reading. I will return to it at some point as I believe it’s worth the read, despite its controversial nature. Him.

So would you say its like a religious book? The Bible or Koran?

As in an uninteresting read, unless its something you believe in or have an interest in?

In a way, yes. His writing is well known to be dull and repetitive, and that’s after the translators sorted it out a bit as they went. And that’s personally how I found it. It was difficult to maintain interest as he basically rambles on in good narcissistic fashion.

The comparison to a religious text is interesting given that it could be said to have become one after he rose to power, despite how badly it was written.
