its a common london thing to call people mate..

guess its a (cant think of the term as im tired! but where people from different parts of the country use different eterms!)

Literally, all of my close friends would say it. I wouldn't use it professionally or to a woman (unless she was a really good friend). It goes:

"You alright mate?"

"Alright maaate, how are you?"

It is situational

If for example it was someone serving me in a store, I would think it a bit too familiar.

It also grates me a bit in personal messages.

However, someone called it me on Saturday and I wasn't bothered in the slightest.

The fact that at the time he was saying 'alright mate' he was lowering his towel to reveal a somewhat impressive cock may, of course, have had something to do with this

Hate being called 'babe' or 'hun'.

Was very disconcerting moving to Devon and being addressed as "my lover" by my neighbour....and that was before I joined fabs!
