Also, when you look turn it on. Look at the screen. Before it goes tits up you should be able to see what version of bios you are using e.g Award, Ami, Phoenix etc. Post that too

"the screen does not come on"

Video card error by the sound of it. It's either fooked or become unseated.

Yes. Different beep patterns mean different things. They are error codes.

"the screen does not come on"

Your manual should indicate what the beep codes mean. It is likely to be a memory problem, or it could be the video card.

If you know a techie friend, get them to open it up and try removing the memory, one stick at a time. If that doesn't help, swap the video card.

If you don't know such a friend, find a local PC repair shop. Avoid PC world - you'll pay through the nose and they're not as good as independents.

If it's just become unseated, it's an easy fix...otherwise, it's still a fairly easy fix. You shouldn't lose anything.

It won't affect anything stored on it. It could be straight forward by just removing the graphics card and replacing it. Or you may need a new one. As long as you are not a gamer, you will pick one up pretty cheap. If you are not familiar with computers though, you may want to get someone to look at it.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Going to give a big shout for the independent guys too! I used a guy who advertises in our parish magazine when my lappy went wrong. Which reminds me that I must get my old PC out and try it again. It gave out one of these codes but I can`t remember what it was!

Try taking the side off and rubbing the internals with the biggest magnet you can find. If that doesn't work try Fairy Liquid.
