I'm not sure. I think because my head associates panties with the young and I've not been one of them for a few decades. Also because it sounds so prissy and just 'ugh' for some reason. But I don't really know... it just isn't a word I like.

Underwear to me covers all garments worn under... so that isn't accurate for just that item.

Knickers is fine, undercrackers, keks... even pants. Pants are boring ones though.

I have a strange relationship with words for that item maybe
