World’s most overrated tourist attractions

London

Good morning fab swingers,

There are places that are considered must see’s when visiting other countries but what has left you utterly underwhelmed and thinking why the fuck did I bother travelling / spending my money seeing that.

I’ll kick off with one overseas and one UK based….

The Taj Mahal, did a 4-hour round trip on the train (having almost shat my pants at Jaipur station before finding one of India’s worst public toilets). Got out at Agra station and all the taxi guys told me the Taj was closed today (bizarrely not a Sunday) - thought they were taking the piss but apparently not. Had to take a tuk-tuk to the other side of the river to take a photo of me with a (very small) Taj in the background. Utter waste of a day.

In terms of the UK, it’s got to be Stonehenge - crowded, nightmare traffic and it’s essentially a pile of stones that takes about 30 seconds to admire.

So what’s your shittest tourist attraction?

Anne Frank House in Amsterdam is pointless. Overpriced. Impossible to get tickets now for months with online booking only (not that it was any better in the past when you could buy tickets on the spot: the queue could go on for hours), and it says a lot when the museum house is smaller than the glass abomination of a building beside it used as the gift shop selling Holocaust tat.

100% avoid.

"London’s a headache. Hate the place. "

That’s harsh. Some amazing places to see and go to - yeah it’s busy but that adds a vibe although it can cause stress. I like to think of London like TKMaxx overwhelming as a whole but have an agenda/objective!

What do you like in Luton?

Wherever I lay my hat

Stonehenge is a good shout.

I spent a month in Western Australia - mainly on the road happening across shit tourist attractions. The Pile of Erupting Mud near Geraldton was decidedly underwhelming as was the fibreglass (thatch too much of a fire risk) replica of Anne Hathaway's cottage

What's special about a Sunday where Christianity is a minor religion? I think it's a bit unfair to slag off an attraction when you went there on a day it was closed!

It's a stunning building and well worth a visit if you like architecture.

"In terms of the UK, it’s got to be Stonehenge - crowded, nightmare traffic and it’s essentially a pile of stones that takes about 30 seconds to admire. "

I once booked the English Heritage tickets for an early morning visit. It allows you access to go right into the stones and as we got there really early, we were the only ones there for a short while. It's a fascinating place.

I'm not sure what you were expecting to see?

I actually thought Pompeii was amazing, it was free to get in when I went as some kind of public holiday - plus it offered some respite to the madness of Naples!

If you are heading to Naples then the excavations at Herculaneum is a good alternative to Pompeii. It is a bit less well known so not as busy or touristy.

I was more disappointed with the Sphinx. I expected it to be massive but it’s really quite underwhelming.

Yes - that’s how a lot of women feel about some meets before someone else says it.

We visit Hurghada a couple of times a year. My mate went and did all the big trips and came back rather underwhelmed so despite my regular visits I've never been ha. Although I do keep saying I'll go one day, you kinda have too. Maybe in a few years ha

I like Jaismler & Johdpur too, love going into the desert toward Pakistan , those crazy little villages past Jaismler , if you ask nicely ther will let you fire an M16 into the air from back of a jeep , it’s like an unofficial groupon for tourists ??

Yosemite

Did it in 2001.

Yeah, it's a nice enough place, but it was a whole day.

Up at the crack of dawn to catch a bus from San Fransisco across the bay to catch a train. After a few hours on the train to then catch a coach to be taken down into the national park, where we got a short break for lunch before taking a 'tour' of the valley in what can only be described as a long trailer with seats attached to a pick up truck - they called it a 'Tram'

Then back on the coach to head back.

Total time spent in Yosemite - less than 2 hours.

Hasn't been called that for a looooooong time now. And what did you expect?

I think some of the worst are rhe pointless ones they created in America just to attract tourists, like the 'Lunch Box Museum' in Columbus, Georgia and the 'Centre of the Universe' manhole in Wallace Idaho.

For me its either that or maybe the giants causeway in Ireland (doesnt really count for the UK!) Amazing natural formation just too many people!

"Good morning fab swingers,

I agree with Stonehenge, utter chaos when I was last there!

For me its either that or maybe the giants causeway in Ireland (doesnt really count for the UK!) Amazing natural formation just too many people!

"

Giant's Causeway is in the uk

Impressive? Yes, without doubt.

But came out wondering if they sold 1% of all the gold and treasures they could feed so many people in poverty and not even notice that 1% was missing.

And €25 to get in to see all the excessive displays while people sit hungry in every country in the world.

"Blackpool "

Agree 100%

I'm only 40 mins down the M55 from hell on earth down the M55.

Blackpool attracts the worst of human kind from all around the UK..proper shithole of a place made for chavs.

And before anybody comments.. Yes..Blackburn is a proper shithole too.. but it's not a

'tourist attraction' ..

Visited Lands End too expecting a remote piece of land ...only to find a very small piece of Blackpool..

Totally over commercialised...loved the stunning coastline and views but the tacky shops , rip off parking prices etc ...I'll visit stunning Cornwall again...but not Lands End

Couldn't agree more, and the valuable stuff you see is a probably only a tiny percentage of what they have stashed in the vaults. I felt there was quite a tense and sinister sort of atmosphere to the place.

I would also add Venice to the list. It stinks.

The sea/beach. Any of them. People flock to beaches? Why? You lie down in the sun (most of the time) and do nothing except get burnt and dehydrated? Or soaked when and burnt when you jump into the sea?

Stonehenge: As others have said, expensive and pointless bits of rock in the middle of a field. Just like the one in Orkney Isles.

One place I found interesting was in Scara Brae on the Orkney Isles one of the oldest human habitats still in reasonable condition (Now comes complete with sea view )

"That place in ltaly buried by volcano, can't even spell it ,expensive ,difficult to get to ,ankle snapper ,red hot ,no shade , at the time it had a crap overpriced restaurant and a beer tent which was a total rip off

You mean Pompeii? One off my bucket list then, I ain’t leaving my wallet there! The heat is normal being in southern Italy specially if it’s anything between May-Oct… but no need for the rip off!!

At the time you paid entry fee then had to pay another fee for a headset to get info from the guide so you knew what you were looking at ,huge place to walk round ,they were expanding excavations, maybe it has improved, wished l had gone sightseeing somewhere else, ltaly a beautiful interesting country ,trouble is the powers that be ,interesting that the female armed police were in fashioned uniforms ,full make up and high heels ,,, cool !

Police drive Lamborghini, are dressed by Armani and who knows what else! They’re something else!

I doubt Pompeii has changed too much after what you said…. It’s a shame, it’s one of my childhood bucket list places to go at least once in a lifetime.

I actually thought Pompeii was amazing, it was free to get in when I went as some kind of public holiday - plus it offered some respite to the madness of Naples! "

I loved it too even in 40+ degree heat. Bribed the ex with the promise of swimming pool sex as a reward if he didn't moan and that worked a treat! Herculaneum was also worth a few hours... Unlike Vesuvius which wasn't.

Go to London very often and their is so much to do and new stuff so never bored. You can find incredible free stuff to do as well as eat and drink fairly reasonably. The stuff that costs can be reduced in price if you check for 2 for 1 deals. Do not have to stop in a hotel but again with London transport being so good it's OK to stop not in the centre. One of best things is that the number of major train stations that take you into the city - so no car!

Having said that Madame Tussauds is a rip off as well as Leicester Square.

So what’s your shittest tourist attraction?"

I'm not necessarily a fan of London as a place, but I have compassion for the people who live there. I suspect I speak for many people in Britain in that.

I suspect you do not.London is a swamp and needs draining.

So you're cool with millions of people dying quickly and slowly because you don't like London?

Lovely."

I suspect humour escapes you.

Infants in blenders? Such a waste.Dry them out and use them as kindling. Energy prices are so high

Birmingham

In Birmingham we have what was once (probably still is) officially the least visited tourist attraction in the UK. Weoley Castle, literally just a few bits of wall left, and it was never actually a castle anyway. Due to its size or lack of, it was a fortified manor house.

"Anne Frank House in Amsterdam is pointless. Overpriced. Impossible to get tickets now for months with online booking only (not that it was any better in the past when you could buy tickets on the spot: the queue could go on for hours), and it says a lot when the museum house is smaller than the glass abomination of a building beside it used as the gift shop selling Holocaust tat.

100% avoid.

Agreed, she's not even there as well "

Nah she was there. She was just hiding.

It's been drained so we can house the millions of people who want to live here; including the hundreds of thousands of Scottish people.

I've lived here all my life and I love getting the boat or train into the centre.

I don't even mind the thousands of tourists once I've had a drink or two.

I was thinking about taking my grandson on a plane to Edinburgh from London City Airport then realised there's nothing much to do there, so we went to Gran Canaria instead.

The NC500. The road's been there for 100's of years, but only when you give it a snappy name do people bother to drive it. Now it's like a motorhome park and the locals detest it.

It's single track with parking spaces now, not passing places and don't even talk about the litter and excrement.

"Lands end. Has been turned into a tourist hell hole with tacky gifts, 8 quid to park and they charge you a tenner to have a photo by the sign post. "

Stuff Lands End - it's not even the furthest west that you can go on the mainland (Ardnamurchan Point in Scotland). If you find yourself in Cornwall try going down the Lizard instead, the actual southernmost point of the mainland. It's a beautiful area, relatively unspoilt by tourists (who all go to Lands End), and if you have National Trust membership there is even free parking.

"Devon ,just anything in Devon

Said by a bitter little Cornishman. Cornwall is very like Wales.Claims to have its own language. Lives off handouts from the English. Both beautiful places ruined by the locals.Populated by bitter, worthless people.

Went to Cornwall once, never again,so run down except for the places paid for by the English, just like Wales. "

Wow! Sounds like you are the bitter one. I have lived in Wales as an English person for 20 years. Welsh people are, in the main, lovely people, helpful and caring. I'm not sure on what you are basing your opinion.

Try Sleaford Castle. It is literally just one lump of rock in a field, and that lump has been liberally restored with concrete.

I'm not dissing Sleaford though, it is a lovely little town. And even if the castle is nothing, the field it is in edges onto a darling tiny river, the other side of which lives a very dear friend of mine. I have spent some very peaceful hours sat by that river, looking across to the castle/lump, watching waterfowl on the water, trout and other fish below the surface, a kingfisher flying above the surface, and even bats at twilight.

A little slice of heaven. But don't go to Sleaford to see the castle...

Got a picture with anyway as we had set out to find it."

That is probably also said of many on here too.
