The other night I had a late night text message saying

Hi Mum I have broken my phone I'm using a mates phone but it's almost out of battery, can you WhatsApp me on 000000000.

Now I straight away reported and deleted the message, but it got me thinking how do they expect to scam me out of money?

They then will follow that up with asking for money etc for a taxi or whatever as their banking details are on the broken phone

PayPal friends and family as it offers no protection or western union.

Possibly gain access to your phone. If you have google pay or similar they may be able to gain access to your online banking ?

Not 100%

I had it a while ago and my daughter was out at the time. It’s to transfer money to a “friend’s” account. I just rang her phone and she answered it. I think the message started with hey mum. She’d just never say hey

My kids never call me Mum which is why I thought it was odd to begin with.

Aye, same. I'm not even my daughters mum. Besides, I like to culture a close relationship with mine, if they don't start a message with "hi Pappio" or "Oi, bawbag" I know it's fake.

My mum had a text message recently from a bank asking for her account details with them, she was smart enough to call me and ask about it. Weirdly, she never noticed they were messaging from a bank that she's never had an account with for all of her 68years alive. Go figure.

I got that text Monday morning...

The bit that showed it was fishy was were it said "WhatsApp my new number 0000)"

If the person whose phone broke had a new one, they wouldn't be using a mates.

I googled it and apparently it's a scam that has been on WhatsApp for a while and is now appearing on texts.

I was momentarily fooled by it though ..

You shouldn’t answer them as then they add you to a list of numbers that will engage with them

My dad's being targeted on his landline at the moment. The recorded voice starts with

"This is the bank".

We've drummed in to him to ignore any calls from banks, Microsoft, Amazon etc and fortunately he does. He's now getting

"Did you know you're eligible for free insulation ?"

This makes me so angry. There are so many senior people out there being taken advantage of purely because they don’t realise something is a scam. It’s obviously been going on for decades (centuries) with various things like roofing/driveways/double glazing, but this is outright profiteering from vulnerable people who have worked hard their entire lives and saved honest money, only to have it nicked by utter c***s.

My elderly friend got a phone call to say his TV license was due to expire and he paid for a new one over the phone. When he looked at his old one he found out it actually expires May. Scam.

Yep!

My mum was scammed twice by 'microsoft'. They targeted her a second time and she'd forgotten about the first due to a head injury

Also because she was deaf (and refused to wear hearing aids) and didn't like to say she hadn't heard she signed up for various subscriptions over the phone for which she had no use. I had to cancel numerous useless ones for her

I got rid of my landline for that reason. I rarely get them on my mobile, except yesterday I got two calls from the same number within minutes of each other, the line was so crackly actually couldn’t believe they were calling from Birmingham and not Calcutta. Still don’t know what they wanted.

If you don’t know already you can register your number with the Telephone Preference Service, calls should go silent for at least 6 months or so but there won’t be as many afterwards

Had almost exactly this last week - I knew straight away and replied “ok I’ve saved this number, you ok?”

I was hoping they’d ask for money and when giving me bank account details I could report that and get their account shut down too - I guess they tumbled that I was on to them though as all I got back was “thanks”

Not heard anything since…

Wont work with these scam calls I'm afraid, Most are from overseas and use software to generate random numbers that it looks like they are calling you from.
