Any computer techies that can give me some advice!!

I've got my broadband through the company I seem to be only ever able to speak to someone in India and my download speed according to them is supposed to me between 9.5 and 13 mb. So I'm trying to download a film which is currently downloading anything between 10.7 and 101 kb/s which even I know is ridiculously slow!!

Any help out there?

Try looking for a different source for the film. One with more leechers and seeders

There's a few different tools you can use to check your download speed, if you google "broadband speed checker" you'll find a few. That's the first thing to do, find out whether the problem is your end or their end. What are you using to download it?

I've only just learnt how to do this so I'm pretty clueless to be honest. This seemed like the best one with 12592 seeders and 3280 leechers not that I have any idea what each of them are!!

I'm using torrent and vuze!! I've not a clue my brother set it up for me!!

Are you using wireless to connect to the internet? Try plugging a lead directly between your pooter and your rooter and you'll find you'll get the full 13mbs.

It's very unlikely to make that much of a difference, I'm getting a 9.9mb/s download speed using wireless just now, which is about 100 to 1,000 times the speed the OP's talking about.

you would get that if you weren't having a wireless conflict. I was just giving the OP a quick fix to download whatever it is she is downloading.

Ultimately, there's usually a channel conflict with wireless routers and setting it to a less frequently used wifi channel that those in her immdiate vicinity would solve that conflict. I'd change it to channel 13, as Virgin routers automatically pick channel 2, 10 or 12 (I got that from a really helpful Virgin techie chappie in India of all places). I'm currently getting 19.35mbps using wifi but I know if I connect a cable between my pc and router I'll get the full 30mbps.

Also depends how busy the bet is at the time.

I find downloading films for 2am uptil 8am is best. Downloads in no time

Even if there was a lot of conflict, 100kb/s is very, very slow. I guess it's not impossible but there's more likely answers you'd want to be looking at first.

OP, have you tried any speed checking tools?

If you are on wifi do you have security enabled? You could have everyone and their mum on your connection and not know. I 'fixed' someone connection the otherday.... By that I mean I kicked off the 9! Other users that were on it!

Well, imagine internet as your pay check... you have gross and net values. So, in this case, if they are selling you a 13MB speed, you'd probably be very happy if in a good day you can reach 1MB as downloads speed.

100k/s isnt a bad speed at all for most cases. Remember that when a person is sharing a file, he is only sharing part of his connection with you. It is likely that 5 or more people are trying to get files from the seeder, so you are not only limitated by the speed you can download but you are also limited by the speed that the person on the other side is able to provide you.

And to finish it all... UK has some tough anti-piracy laws and systems. For instance - most internet providers do what is called as "traffic shappin" where they can identify the kind of download you are making (if it is from a webpage, if it is a singe file from a host, if it is p2p, etc...). Usually they frown uppon torrents, and do not provide ulimited access to them. So it is likely that during day times you will have a very low capability to download from torrents. I have orange and I have noticed that during the week is hell , but during week end mornings they "losen up a bit".

But if you keep it at 100k, it is not all thab bad at all. Not ideal, but not bad nonetheless.

Lol I'll be honest most of all of that has gone right over my head!! I've tried connecting so I'm not wireless but neither of the leads I have are any bloody good - they both have the same connectors at each end and I need one with different ends!!! I'm assuming my wifi is security proof as it needs a password to log into it!! Oh well at current rate I've only got 11 days to go till the download finishes

leave it running over night or change bit torrent client to utorrent as it might be faster using that software, plus as said before you are relying on other peoples upload speeds which are never ideal considering how many others are doing the same (leechers) only the seeds have the complete file. you will find it will probably be done by morning anyway

Some internet providers will throttle you if you are using p2p sites - BT being one of them, so no matter how fast you sync with the exchange, your data throughput may be reduced to next to nothing .........

You said you're downloading at between 10 and 100 kb/s - do you mean kilobits per second (known as kbps) or kilobytes per second (known as kBps... note the capital B distinguishes between bits and bytes). A byte is 8 times larger than a bit, so this could make some difference but I'm going to assume you meant kilobytes and not kilobits, as most of the time that's what's used.

However, when people talk about broadband speeds they use megabits and not megabytes. So, when the helpdesk person said you should get between 9.5 and 13 mb/s he was actually talking about megabits per second and not megabytes. Again a megabyte is 8 times larger than a megabit. So converting your broadband speed from megabits to megabytes means you're getting between 1.1 megabytes and 1.6 megabytes per second.

This means you're currently downloading at 100 kilobytes per second when your line should give you at least 1.1 megabytes per second, or you're getting under 10% of the potential of the line. That's a rough figure as there are 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte... but I was just interested in what percentage you're getting.

To me, that doesn't sound like you're being throttled by your broadband provider for using peer-to-peer traffic. I'm not aware of any ISPs that throttle someone by 90% when using P2P. If you looked at your ISP's website then they'd probably tell you if they throttle or do any traffic shaping and by how much, but I don't think that's what's causing your problem.

Similarly, someone mentioned about you potentially using the same wireless channel as your neighbours thereby causing interference... this can be a problem, but you'd get it all the time, not just when downloading via P2P, so again I don't necessarily think it's the case here. To test it, I'd suggest going to a broadband speed test site - such as speedtest dot net - and testing your download speed to see if it matches the 9.5 - 13 megabits that you're supposed to be able to get. If you get expected speeds using a speed test site then you can rule out WLAN channel interference.

Incidentally, the channels to use ideally are ones that aren't used by your neighbours and that don't overlap with the channels they're using. If your network is 802.11b then the only non-overlapping channels are 1, 6, 11 and 14, whereas for 802.11g or 802.11n then the non-overlapping channels are 1, 5, 9 and 13.

Personally, I think the reason your download is so slow - especially if you don't notice a problem normally - is most likely because you're using bit torrent. Bit torrents are useful for spreading files across multiple people - known as a swarm - quickly because of the way it works (you download small chunks of a file and immediately start sharing whatever chunks you've downloaded, whereas before Bit Torrents were invented you had to download an entire file before you could start to share it). But it's still a slow process.

Also, some bit torrent trackers implement a system whereby the more you've uploaded the better speeds you'll get so you may find that although it's painfully slow to start with your download will increase as your upload-versus-download ratio gradually gets better.

I'm not sure how much discusion of bit torrent, P2P, downloading films, etc... is tolerated on Fab so I'd better leave it at that. Send me a PM if you want to know more.

Stop using Vuze for starters. Download bitcomet. You will never attain your full speed using a torrent program anyway but I'd have thought 1500kbs is reasonable, but much of it has to do with other people's upload speeds too.

I have a 60mb package and using wireless only clocked 32mb, I switched to a wired connection and now get between 58mb and 62mb depending on the time of day.
