Eat or dump?

I am sure many people on here have the same problem.

Today is the last day of my Christmas holls from work, and so all the decorations are away, the tree has been chopped up and put in the garden waste, the cards have been put in the Sainsbury’s charity box and the house is pretty much back to normal. Except, we still have an inordinate amount of snacky type food left over from the festivities.

Now in my defence it is MUCH less than previous years as I made a conscious effort not to over buy this year, but I do not know what to do. I feel very wrong throwing away perfectly edible food when there are people going hungry, but in all honesty I do not think we are going to eat it.

Nor is it stuff that I can give to people as it is already opened.

Husband begged me this morning not to make him take mince pies in his lunch box lol

Which is the most immoral? Forcing the family to eat the food or throwing it away.

throwing it! make him eat them, and if he dont suggest kinky sex, tie him up, blind fold etc, and then get them mince pies out and force feed them to him lol, chances are he wanted them 4 xmas and then didnt eat them so ...... open wide lol

We bought less last year so there was much less waste. Also we deliberately tried not to 'have everything on offer at once' and just use what was out and wanting to be eaten up. We still have a lot of food in storage that will be okay for a goodly while in the freezer.

Mince pies for breakfast

Mince pies for tea

Mince pies with white sauce

Mince pies with chocolate sauce

And ive still got some left

I would love to have given it away to a food bank, but am not sure that open stuff would be well received. Some examples are…..

mince pies – but stored in a tin, not sealed in box

Half a chocolate log – in a tin, obviously not sealed in a box

Two thirds of an open tub of savoury cheesy snacks

Multiples boxes of chocolates, all containing just the least favourite flavours

Open Jars of nuts with half gone

A stollen loaf with one slice gone that tasted shit

An open box of dates that had a few gone

So not really stuff that a food bank would want

I am thinking i may just take it to work on monday and leave it out for people to help themselves.

though i guess most people will have their own to get rid of lol

Also make a soup with either cauliflower or brocolli, crumble in and use as thickening

I have cakes and pudding and all sorts most things will keep and will be eating over weeks to come .. Been good this year i never really went mad i did make nice things .. and most things have been eaten .

i only buy food for day to day.

guess im lucky like that and dont have a family i need to feed.

We didn't eat much of our Christmas food due to feeling under the weather so our cupboards are fairly full. Even the turkey had to be cooked then portioned up and frozen again. The speciality cream needs using very soon so may heat up the xmas pudding over the weekend and have a nibble.

Most of the snack type stuff will be eaten by little one over the next few weeks I'm sure.

Throw it away.

None of it is nutritious. It's all sugar and fat.

If you had eaten it all, the needy wouldn't have got a look in anyway so it's not immoral to throw it away.

Compost some of it and put some out for the birds.

I grew up with the narrative that we should not waste food and as a result I often ended up eating things that I should not have done. I have taught my kids differently...and I now try and buy less and whatever is left in " less healthy choices" gets thrown away this week. No point it ending up on our waistlines....

It goes back to the 80s or 90s when some under cooked pork waste from a school was fed to pigs and it started a big foot and mouth outbreak.... My question was what was a school doing feeding under cooked pork to children... So now you can cut up veg in your garden and give it to pigs no probs, but if you took it in to your kitchen to cut it up it would then be illegal to feed to livestock in case of cross contamination...
