This may get me a ban or pulled...

But, do you personally see fat/bbw's/big men as just fat and lazy individuals,

who are all thick, wont get a job etc?

I am a fat bird/woman whatever you want to call the likes of me.

Do you automatically think I am thick or lazy because I am unemployed?

To enlighten you, I worked from 14 to 28. So paid tax from 16. Then went to work in a shop when getting my a levels when I was 29. Then got a degree with a 'babe in arms'.

Can I get a job? Can I fuck. Even as a xmas temp in a shop all because I was good at computer systems and had a nice voice.

So all those in favour of getting help from the government etc if you are slim, is it right I get fuck all and told I am over qualified???

So all those fat bashers who think every fat person is lazy orvthick, think again.... Oh and get bent!

No. I have met some very intelligent, very motivated, very successful people in the larger sizes.

And would not assume either, that it is in any way indicative of being successful, intelligent etc. Shouldn't stereotype people.

In some cultures (tonga I believe, and also parts of central africa) "build" is used to symbolize power because it represents the ability to gather what is locally in short supply.

You're an example of what I mean. Takes a lot of character to get a degree after your 20s when you have a young child.

Can't see that this is controversial so you shouldn't get banned - you might get pulled ....

"Why would anyone equate physical stature with cerebral capacity....???"

There has been some research showing that a fat person is less likely to be appointed to a role if there is a thinner person that is also appointable. It was about 10 or more years ago and I can't remember the source right now. If I get time tomorrow I will see if I can dig it up.

You are seeing the root cause of all your problems as you being overweight.

My advice? Test that theory. Go on a diet and lose enough weight that you'd be classed as 'fit', or a 'hottie' or even just slim, and see if it gets you a job.

You'll be surprised to learn that it wasn't the new you that got you a job, it was the new you that did it.

Well I wouldn't say fat people were inherently lazy although we are (I can't deny I am a little portly) less likely to nip to the gym, do a 10 mile run or cycle to work. I guess it all depends on your _iewpoint of lazy. In general though if someone was to say us chubbies are greedy it would be very hard to deny it.

Im really not. Personally, i have lost over 4 stone in the last 18 months and beleive getting a job has fk all to do with my appearance hence this post in response to the obesity benefits thread. This xmas has been the hardest ever

i gave up my part time job to concentrate on my degree and baby. Little did I know was my specialist subject was to be pulled by the current government.

My point is, dont automatically assume fat people are thick and lazy.

My point though being intelligence has no relation to size.

OP yes there has been some negativity around larger size ladies again recently. I don't know why this size wars thing is such a threat.

I have never had the _iew that all bigger people are lazy and thick.

I am not a slim lady, I'm a buxom lass for sure. I know this may sound arrogant, but I think its obvious I have a certain level of intelligence and education, so I wouldn't get offended by remarks you've quoted as they simply do not apply to me.

I am a fat girl and my way of dealing with the fat bashing threads, or any thresd I've no intrest in is simple, I don't read them. I refuse to have a bunch of strangers who know nothing about me throw generalised, nasty, abusive comments around. Yes I know it happens, I'm not naive, but why let it get to you. The only person whos opinion of you that matters is your own, who cares what a bunch of people who you are never going to meet think. You sound like a very determined person who wants whats best for herself and family, and that determination will be what gets you the things you want in life.

Good post Hels! xx

I think size has nothing to do with intelligence or getting a job. In some areas there just aren't any jobs. Even for a scary ranty Scouser.

Hang in there, you're a great person you'll find something. Could you maybe do more training to slightly change your expertise to match something they are looking for?

Rusty made a good point about tattoo's. It's not just fat people, it's tattoo'd people, tall people, skinny people, disabled people etc etc. Everyone gets discriminated against at some point. Next week they will pick on someone else.

Whoops, I put it on the wrong thread the first time! I went looking for the research.

I couldn't find the source for the American study on obesity and getting jobs - I think I must have thrown those files away.

There are two interesting pieces of more recent research here, though:

The Impact of Obesity on Employment, Stephen Norris, 2007 - Imperial College, London;

Adult socio-economic, educational, social and psychological outcomes of childhood obesity: a national birth cohort study - BMJ 2005.

Both show less positive outcomes for overweight people in securing work. The second states it clearer that fat women fare worse than (fat) men in terms of employment and relationships. Fat children are more prevalent in depressed socio-economic families are neighbourhoods.
