Bucks

Bought a toshiba LCD back in march from amazon and the USB ports have stopped working. As that model is now discontinued they've arranged refund and will collect it next week..

Question is ..

Buy the latest version of same telly with the refund -or- buy the LED version which is 10% more expensive??

Go with LED, might cost you a little more but much more energy efficient. Better for the polar bears apparently.

Take a trip to a tv shop and compare the pictures and sound quality. There is a surprising variation between different models.

Led won my vote

LED max input sockets and you won't go wrong.

Just recently updated my TV as well as my virgin media... The guy who came out to change over the virgin box had the HDMI cable with him, but he basically said if I needed to ever buy one buy the cheapest one... Shops will try and sell you them for 25 quid etc, but they're no different to one you can get for £1.

Led also a lot thinner and therefore looks better. I also think the picture us superior compared to LCD.

HDMI cables are a lot more delicate than scart leads - so if you bend em about a lot they will break (unless you pay a fortune for Monster ones)But they're dirt cheap on ebay - so easy to replace!

i feel robbed by sainsburys if a one pound cable would have done the same thing.

i was lured in by the gold coloured plating and snazzy packaging... dammit

HDMI leads on short cables almost anything will do, but if I was trying to run the cable 10m I would consider a better quality cable.

If USB ports broke through use, consider plugging a cheaper USB hub into them on next tv and then plugging/unplugging USB bits and pieces vai the hub.

On comparing in shops - so many don't have a decent reference signal, have seen loads using freeview as SD resolution to show off a HD TV.

If pic quality is the priority, just compare amount of megapixels tv has, bigger the amount, better the pic.

Agree, make it an upgrade if you can afford it (honest point - I don't have a TV so wouldn't know what 10% means).

You'll save a little energy, and more when you're watching dark horrors or old B&Ws!

The rule of thumb seems to be bigger is better so get the biggest one you can fit in the corner and wear a tin hat when the Mrs sees it.

Ok! Finally a subject I can use my work expertise for!!

LED is the way to go - many reasons, i.e. efficiency, brightness, picture quality, lack of 'smearing' seen on LCD's.....

I specify TV's on a daily basis and would recommend the Samsung range or LG. No point going for a 'bigger' brand name as the quality will be no better and you will pay a lot more.

As for HDMI leads - don't go for the cheapest ones!!! Pay a little more (a 2m one for £15-20) and you will get a reliably better picture. The cheaper ones do 'knock back' the signal quality - this can be seen by doing a side-by-side comparison (I have done it!)

And anything over 10m should not be done with one cable - use a repeater or a cat5 transmitter/receiver pair of adapters (can be bought on eBay) as HDMI is not designed to be transmitted over an HDMI cable more than 10m. (It's also cheaper too!!)
