I've got a fucking gooey eye. And no, it isn't because I put my fanny tights over my face.

It's 65 euro to visit the doctor here and I'm not going again I only went last week. Cost of living crisis and all that jazz.

Pharmacies I've been in don't do anything for a funky eyeball. Go to the doctor they say. My eyes are so uncomfy.

What's worked for your sticky eyes?

I had it a month ago and went to the pharmacy and they gave me Chloramphenicol gel to put in eyes. It really helped. Don’t know why they’ve told you to go to docs? There’s adverts telling us to go to pharmacies for minor things so they should be helping you x

Yes I was surprised they don't do anything like that.

I had the same thing last week, went in because my little one had it and they said they can't do anything and to go get antibiotic drops from the gp.

I've only tried the two local ones nearby, I'll get to a bigger one tomorrow and see if that is any better. I'll actually have a look on the shelves too, someone recommended Optrex and I didn't even think to just look for standard eye drops I just went straight to the counter.

I'm currently using cooled boil water but it's almost like it is making it worse.

I swear that's what he prescribed my daughter. Wait let me check. OK it was chloromycetin which I imagine is the same thing pretty much? And I had to make an appointment for that and pay 65 euro plus prescription charge! And usually kids would be free appointments to be fair but they've messed up her medical card.

I miss the UK so much.

Yeah it’s not nice to do and your sight goes blurry for a bit. I asked for the drops version but was told there was a manufacturing problem. Couldn’t see it online either

Yep and that's exactly why I don't want to make another appointment to pay so much for the same thing, it's too much money. I guess I'll ride it out with cool salty water and pray I come across a pharmacy that will have some sort of eye drops.

Boiling water with salt in it, let it cool then soak a cotton pad in it and bathe your eyes. My kids get conjunctivitis quite a lot and this always works for them

It could be an infection in which case try saline solution or Chloramphenicol ointment Alternatively it could be a scratch to the retina, which can be tricky to heal owing to nighttime REM. If so try Artelac nighttime gel or similar (drops are useless at night). It might take a while to clear up, so persevere.

Ok well it will depend on whether it is bacterial or allergic conjunctivitis. If it is bacterial then you can buy Chloramphenicol eye drops or ointment from a pharmacy in the UK but they will want to see you to have a look at your eye. One important thing to avoid doing is touching or rubbing your eye as you could spread it into the other eye if it's infection. If you need to clean your eye with a tissue then throw it away making sure you wash your hands before and after. Any pain in the eye must always be checked out.

Yes it’s fantastic if you have sore eyes. Make strong tea, no milk and when cold use an eye bath or egg cup to bathe your eyes. However if not cured after 2 days you need to go to Doctor for eye hospital.

As someone said above, Chloramphenicol drops (the ointment is an arseache to see through).

If you have pain though you should see a GP.

I've heard of lots of people getting recurring conjunctivitis these past few months; including myself.

They don't look at your eyes here. The assistant gets it from the shelf and sells it to you.

Whole milk, heated, soaked on a cotton wool pad, wipe from nose to outer eye, only use pad for one wipe across and keep renewing. Also cooled boiled water. If doesn’t clear, visit a pharmacy for eye drops

I woke up this morning and my eyes were all swollen and completely stuck together. It's even worse today.

I'll keep at the salty water and I've asked my partner to have a look around for something since he's out today. I'll keep using salty water. But how much salt? I've been putting in a few flakes. Or should I use the fine table salt stuff?

I'd suggest getting to see an Optometrist asap. You are entitled to free NHS consultation. Eyesight is precious."

I'm not in the UK I'm in Ireland. It's just so expensive and because my daughter had it and is fine now I'm hesitating visiting the GP again because it will more than likely go away soon enough. I'll book an appointment tomorrow if it isn't any better. I think.

Well guys you'll be happy to know I got some eye drops. And saline solution.

My eyes aren't too bad, very red but no gunk. I keep cleaning them every few hours. Maybe I somehow got the worst of the gunk out this morning because I was disgusted seeing the amount I was wiping away. O.o

I uploaded a new pic with my eye drops. It's not for conjunctivitis but it will help to soothe them.

Last I heard they stopped letting you have the good antibiotics unless it’s desperate, and advised bathing twice daily with warm, previously boiled water. Which seemed a bit crap tbh.

Yes darjeeling I am keeping it classy showing the world my bush that hasn't had a razor near it for 10 weeks. I rarely do a magnificent monochrome but maybe I should make monochrome minge a thing my darjeeling.

You're sooooo lovely. I never even thought to ask anyone back home to post them over. I think by the time they arrived here though I'd probably be over the worst of it. Ah thank you for being so sweet and offering.

My eyes are a little bit sticky now, but no gunk. And very red, but hopefully they will calm down by the time morning comes. I did get Optrex soothing drops but I don't think it will do much, we will see.

And yes, I'm changing my pillows, towels and face cloths etc each day.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed I'm much better tomorrow. If I wake up and my eyes aren't swollen and stuck together then I think I'll be on the mend.

Cotton wool and saline solution slowly add carefully every couple of hours… and remember not to rub your eyes and your hands can cross contaminate

I had it so bad once I was basically blind for 8 weeks

Ah Fabio you poor thing! It's a bloody nightmare.

Newrocks thanks for asking I'm OK now. My eyes are a bit dry and crusty in the morning, but no longer gooey or building up with slime sticking together. So I think I'm over the worst of it now. I used the soothing eye drops and boiled water. I'd say it took about 5 days to clear but at least I didn't have to spend 80 euro for an appointment and antibiotics.

If it flairs up again we always tell people to keep them clean as possible with cool boiled water and if you can get chloramphenicol drops, several brands do it (goldeneye,optrex etc) but it's tricky as these only treat it if its bacterial, if its viral then then won't help, then it is relying on the hygiene, lubricating drops and cold compresses x
