Reports that the church is considering going gender neutral with God and not using the word He.

Firstly there is no such thing as “The Church”, and secondly I could not care less.

But given the churchgoing demographic it seems very very unlikely that this will happen.

When all is said and done,

You'll believe God is a woman.

And I, I feel it after midnight,

A feelin' that you can't fight, my one.

It lingers when we're done,

You'll believe God is a woman.

Religions don't have enough to argue about so they've put this out there. It makes all the difference. All that renaissance art of white bearded men will have to be repainted and add some rainbows while at it. I can see this ending well for all the god based religions.

My daughter was told in a R.E lesson at school to draw a picture of what she thought God looked like. She drew a woman. The teacher came over, looked at her drawing and told her off because she'd drawn a woman. Go figure, how could the teacher tell her off when no one knows what God looks like.

I totally agree, but it’s all over the text.

I’d just treat it like the French do, and yeah ok there’s a masculine pronoun, but let’s not get too hung up on God’s genitals.

To paraphrase a popular meme..'God promised an end to suffering and poverty, Odin promised to rid the world of Ice Giants...not seen any Ice Giants lately'.

In all seriousness, I have no issue with what god/gods someone believes in (or what they look like) if in doing so it brings them some comfort so long as they don't try and impose their beliefs on everyone else.

That's awful! Who the hell is that teacher to tell a child off for her interpretation of what God looks like! She realises she is teaching a theory which has no bearing.

My son got a detention when he was six for 'upsetting the Vicar' he went to a CofE and the Vicar came and started talking about how God made the earth, the plants the people and animals, my little boy asked him 'if God made all that then who made God'

When I picked him up the teacher explained and I asked 'did he get his answer?' And got told no, the Vicar 'chose not to answer.

Then my boy didn't do his detention, because I chose not to send him, even rang the School the next day to ensure it didn't happen.

This is true, but I have also met a number of people from different faiths who have been lovely and there are a number of people who are not religious who can be nasty (usually hiding behind their keyboards...just look at the comments on any Transgender persons Youtube channel for example)

People will be people ..some are nice, some are not so pleasant regardless of any other factors.

It's not whether they exist or not. It's that they are now of non binary gender. Once they've gone after God... Who or what is next to be neutered.? "

Read God was portrayed as male because in a patriarchy the highest power is assumed to be male, which it doesn't have to or should be. Is a a step to combat sexism and discrimination against women.

Do they intend to edit the Bible accordingly?

They've been dealt a sexist hand. What can they do. And the idea of an omnipotent, vengeful god is probably pretty masculine - there's a lot to change in their view.

I think you will find that God is a man. His name is Chuck.

He has a sister that he does not really on all that well with, Amara.

He was a bit of a shitty father, so his first born was a bit of a rebel and got kicked out of the family. The rest of his kids had to put up with an absent father, so they are a bit of a mess too.

I wonder if the people who are agitating for this change are folks who are "religious" but think it will improve their religion.

Not "religious" but would become so if this change is made.

Not "religious" and would not become religious if the change is made.

I'm not. Though one of my children is. Wonder if this will make their religion more valuable for them or less valuable or make no difference to them.

"Firstly there is no such thing as “The Church”, and secondly I could not care less. "

Interesting, now just wondering is there a theological thread on Fab?

For that group, the question to answer in less than 100 words: is there such a thing as 'the church' discuss?

To some, church is a building, to the evangelical Christian then you are probably looking at Christian believers, others with a more inclusive view would see it as the Christian religious community as a whole, but you could go for the Greek term 'ekklesia' used in the New Testament and translated into English as 'Church' and that literally means 'assembly', 'congregation', or 'meeting' and is used to identify the early believers in Jesus.

In the context of this thread, the OP refers to a single entity, which does not exist.

I’m assuming they mean The Church Of England, but they don’t speak for everyone.

I can’t see the Catholics being down with this, for example. My point is there are loads of independent Christian sects, and CoE is pretty much irrelevant outside of the UK.

Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as the final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God.

The argument goes something like this: ‘I refuse to prove that I exist,’ says God, 'for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.’

'But,’ says Man, 'the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn’t it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don’t. QED.’

'Oh dear,’ says God, 'I hadn’t thought of that,’ and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

'Oh, that was easy,’ says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.

Most leading theologians claim that this argument is a load of dingo’s kidneys, but that didn’t stop Oolon Colluphid making a small fortune when he used it as the central theme of his bestselling book, Well That about Wraps It Up for God.

Meanwhile, the poor Babel fish, by effectively removing all barriers to communication between different races and cultures, has caused more and bloodier wars than anything else in the history of creation.

I get a bit baffled when people say "religion causes wars". What wars exactly? The Crusades were mainly fought to control lucrative trade routes across the middle East. Religion was used as an excuse to generate funding, but those royal houses who contributed profited hugely from them. Genghis Khan was not religiously motivated to conquer, neither was Alexander the Great, the Roman Empire, the Vikings or Mzilikazi. WW1 and WW2 weren't religiously motivated, neither was Vietnam, Korea, Cambodia etc. So again, what wars did religion actually start?

That's not what started the war though. Which is the point being made. Religion is part of the catalyst, it is fuel for the flames but it is never the catalyst alone.

Religion was a great way to radicalised, because at the end of the day it is a cult.

We should ask all these people who say "God spoke to me". Ask if it was a man's or woman's voice.

What is going on here guys?

"I get a bit baffled when people say "religion causes wars".

The ongoing genocide of Rohingya Muslims by the Burmese.

The Serbian genocide on Kosovon Albanians 20 odd years ago

Religion didn't cause the war, it was about territory. "

It didn't kick off the second World War but the persecution of Jewish people started before the war, and the holocaust resulted in over 6 million (I think) deaths.

Religion wasn't involved?

Which of course isnt what was being said.

But its definite that it can and has started, or at least contributed to, mumerous wars/conflicts

Firstly, it's "she", not "he" - Bess here Secondly, I was referencing my own assertation that it has been said that religion causes wars. I still maintain that religion itself does not start wars, but has often been used as a contributory factor, but not he only, or main cause. To save me from addressing each conflict individually, I suggest you google "did the ....... start because of religion" and insert the conflict you're interested in place of the dots. Blaming the causes of these wars on religion only is intellectually lazy and far from accurate.

Wires were crossed. He was asking wars directly started because of.

The genocides I mentioned were carried out against a specific religion or seft of a religion. I'm not going into why the holocaust again. It didn't start world war 2 but I don't see the relevance.

Crusades were Christians against Muslim armies in the holy land.

Anyway this was a serious chat about god losing his mojo

Got to be honest given the nature of a site like this it doesn't exactly match up with the ideals of the bible. Thou shalt not covet another man's wife etc. Nowhere in the bible does it imply its ok to sleep with your neighbours wife as long as everyone is OK with it. Now if we were talking about the viking religion....

Can you give me any names and/or links to articles where prominent military historians state categorically that particular wars were started solely for religious reasons? I would be very interested to read their theories. Are you confusing primary combatants for causation, as in the crusades and other conflicts where opposing factions were of different religions, but were fighting for power, resources or political superiority?

I don't understand what you're trying to prove or disprove.

The Crusades were a series or religious wars. Which children learn in primary school.

Ok, ill keep it simple. Rather than quoting numerous historians and conflicts. I'll stick to one.

The Crusades.

Its believed they started after a sermon by Pope Urban in 1095.

The call was to wrest the Holy Land and Holy sites, including Jerusalem, from Muslim Control.

The first few Crusades were purely religiously motivated.

However, towards the end, in particular the 4th and 5th Crusades, its believed it was to achieve economic and political power in the East.

The French Wars of Religion 1562 to 1598 (2-4 million deaths), The 30 Years War 1618 to 1648 (4-8 million deaths) and The Spanish Armada are three in Euopean history that can be argued had religion as their main driving cause.
