Can't connect my laptop to internet ..it connects but then says local only and can't get any pages open ...daughters laptop And phone connect ok

im not very technical so plain speak please lol

any help really appreciated

Turn off for about 10 mins then back on and you will get a new connection at you local exchange turn off and on quickly won't do this.

It common for customers to have problems after the new year with there Internet supplier due to many new customers be added to the network mine has done something similar now and again the last few weeks

sorry I didn't realize that some equipment was working and only your laptop wasnt.

Have you had it working at all?

Sometimes you have to change the wireless channel on your router as some devices work on certain channel better than others but you would need some knowhow to do that.

new supplier three weeks ago not had laptop connected yet no have keep trying but give up

It may be that your connection on the lappy has corrupted. Not had that for a long time, but it can happen. Go into your network connections (or network and sharing centre) and look for Trouble shoot connection or similar. Run that and see if it can tell you what is wrong. Alternatively, set up a new network connection with your existing router. If that works (after giving it a new name) delete your old connection... Your daughter may have to do the same if you delete the old connection...

Mine connects to my phone but not my lappy sometimes and the reboot thing works.

I agree that setting up a new connection could work to.....mine needs that sometimes to, maybe I need a new laptop lol

hover curser over the internet conection icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen right click and a box will apear scroll down to repair conection and windows should sort the problem out for you

it sounds like you have an IP conflict its not the router its the laptop itself that is the problem

Right click mouse over wireless icon ( normally near clock)

Click troubleshoot connections

If no problem is found, click on wireless icon again, find your connection and choose forget this connection.

Let list refresh. Re type password (on router) and you should be able to connect

I've come across similar problems many times were everything connected but one laptop I changed the wireless channel on the router the worked.

Some built in wireless in some laptops dont like certain freq channels on routers they dont always work very well.

Buying a good quality USB wireless adapter is always a good thing I work as IT technician and this solves it usually

my advice is unless you know how to change some wireless settings in the router is buy a usb wireless adapter belkin netgear or borrow one of someone to try

Got halfway through now says there still seems to he a problem checking for other network problem.....now says windows tried repair but prob still exists modem ir router not available ..but all lights ate on router

It's possible that it is not your router it has connected to, and has been saved as default. Do a new wireless search and see if it picks yours up

Click, File and from the drop down list where is says 'Work Offline' - if there is a tick next to the wording, click the wording again, this will put IE back online.

not been funny but its cache also DNS stands for domain name server which changes IP address to web names i.e www.blah blah.com so if web pages are working on other devices then its not that be carefull what advice you take

the cache will record every time somthing conects to the router sometimes it will record a duplicate and this will couse an ip conflict ie when to computers are trying to use the same ip to conect to the internet when this happens only one will conect the other will only get a local conection resting the router with the rest button clears this it does not clear the host domain or the dns server or internal passwords this has to be done manualy

it will clear it on some ADSL connections then the router wont work i do it for a living.

The router gives each device its own IP address to start with and also if they were duplicates it wont even show as local only if that was the case

That is rubbish, I'm on ADSL and have rest router loads times when my laptop loses connection. It was my supplier that told me about master reset

Go to network settings on the bottom left then remove the saved settings rescan then add the router and type in the password. If it doesn't see the router it's a problem with your internal antenna

time for you to try a diffrent line of work then m8

the only way a master reset will lose all info is if you logon to the router its self and do an internal master reset this will the put the router back to its factory settings and it will not work then

presing the pin will not do this

to be honist your best bet is phone your broadband provider and they will explain what to do they can also log into your router for you and sort it from there

I know what I'm on about but yes ill agree that if the router was provided by the internet supplier and pre flashed then it keeps the settings. unless you log into the router.

But I have on many occasions done a master reset using a pin and all settings were lost.

I was stating because I didnt want the lady to possibly lose her interent into her house.

Best to play it safe if you dont know have to log into a router to change things.

True, been with pretty much every Internet supplier (use I switch a lot lol) and master reset the modem works all time

From reading, and I am saying not much else, or else

I'd check the wireless is turned on her laptop.

Then hard wire to check.

Finally, I'd call my provider

But seeing as we are geeks I don't have to call anyone

your internet provider has the ip adress and password to your router

they will loginto and look for a problem if the problem isnt in the router they will then ask you to plug the laptop in via a cable were with the help of a simple password they they will give you they will then log into your laptop find the problem and sort it for you (if it can besorted) this will take all of around 10 mins and is a free service

tip Phone them

I hope it gets sorted for you _azzaahh.

If your still having problems after your router is reset, im presuming that after many stating that resetting it will help thats its not still working....

then try the cable in the router if that works then it would seem to be the wireless in the laptop.

Id go with trying a USB wireless adapter which will work better anyways

It could be a compatability issue. I see you've had a new supplier. How old is your laptop?

The router is more than likely an 802.11N antenna frequency, if the lap top is oldish it probably only supports an 802.11g

If you've got a working laptop, I'd google for actual technical forums for help. But it does sound like it's the laptop and not the connection. I'd get the laptop to "forget" the wireless connection and reconnect from scratch.
