Depends on the automatic!

Have a semi automatic, has 3 ways of driving it.. sports mode, sensible and the bit where you go up and down with the gears (which confuses me)

Great for driving around London, boring driving down roads like A303

A lot depends on the car as well. I have a Golf R with a DSG that I loved and it was miles better than the manual R i test drove. I had a GT86 for a while as well and that had a fantastic manual box, I had the misfortune of having an automatic version on loan for a day and it was bloody awful. So it's not as straight forward as manual is always better than auto.

Besides everything will be EV soon anyway so the whole idea of manual will seem odd to the next generation of drivers. Assuming of course the next generation don't actually just want autonomous

For a daily driver an auto is so much more convenient but for a weekend or fun car it would have to be manual. And by fun I mean something rwd with an lsd or my dream car is awd a Nissan skyline gtr 34 vspec ii in midnight purple nur edition

This is it. I do a lot of driving so I'm swaying towards auto next time.

I don't think I'd ever buy electric because of the miles range.

Got my furst Automatic 20 years ago (and still have it)

My daily driver is also an Auto.

Just makes so much sense.

Those who prefer manuals, make tge most of them because, as we move to EVs, they'll dissappear

I heard they've been banned. I can remember my uncle driving through town with the doors open.

I'd love them now. Easier for getting out in tight parking spaces.

I'd like a contraption you just get in, programme a location, and off it goes autonomously. Then I don't have to bother with driving at all. Driving is "dead time". I can fill that with other things more important.

Sure, a taxi would do the same thing I suppose, but then you have to wait for it (if it ever bothers turning up).

Stick shift refers to what we all know as the traditional gear stick between the passenger and the driver

Depends on the system used.

My daily driver has Fords Powershift 6 speed. No torque Converter. It has two clutches.

One for Reverse, 1st, 3rd & 5th and the other for 2nd, 4th & 6th.

Had autos for long time due to wife breaking her arm very badly. Love autos but enjoy driving manuals when I get the chance.

Automatic although I’ve recently learned after almost a year that I can flick it over to sports mode and use it as a manual.

Good fun and it certainly increases the heart rate!

Have had both. I don't have a particular preference from a driving point of view but modern automatic gearboxes can be mega expensive if they go wrong so sticking to manual now.

No. It’s an automatic clutch. No pedal or anything.

So no clutch then aye lol

Automatic/semi automatic cars don’t have a clutch

They have a torque converter in place of a clutch "

I just mistrust the complexity of automatic transmission (as well as many of the other features/workings of newer cars). Although to be fair I probably over estimate the potential problems, reliability and cost of automatic transmission (I have never really looked into it seriously). Plus trying to master the coordination of keeping my left foot out of the way when driving a automatic. I generally just like to avoid automatics. I suppose one day many many years in the future I'll finally run out of the option of manual

Same here,

My husband replaced the gearbox in my car with a reconditioned one in about 2 hours, including replacing the clutch & seals. Car is like new. Whole job cost less than £300.

Doubt that would have been the case with one of those electronic double clutch affairs.

There’s a lot of different auto setups. You can’t generalise.

Yes there are twin clutch.

Yes there are trad slushbox torque converter planetary gearboxes.

Yes there are CVT continually varying transmissions with cones and rubber bands.

Yes there are robotised manuals.

Yes there is all the fun of the Hybrid/EV setups.

Yes there are hybrid mashups of the above eg slushbox on a robotised manual.

They all have pros and cons and all drive differently.

For pottering about and sitting in traffic I love an auto.

For more focused track driving I’d probably prefer a manual or a DSG, so I had more control over engine braking and where I was in the power band.

My manual is in the shop getting fixed and they gave me an auto as a courtesy. It amazed me how quickly I got used to it, but my left foot did get bored.

Never owned an auto, driven lots though, and the technology is definitely getting better and better.

My work vans are all auto, and quite nice to drive to be fair, unless I had no choice, I’m not quite ready to lose a clutch pedal just yet.

I find driving a manual much more engaging

I have both, manuals and autos with both big and small engines attached. The large engine with an auto feels held back by the gearbox. It’s ok and great in traffic. But it’s not what you’d call fun. I almost always prefer a manual, unless stuck in traffic then an auto wins!

I like the control ability of a manual. It’s where you want it to be and you’re in charge. The same way I like having a fun car without traction control or abs. Simple, lightweight and keeps you entertained. Something that can’t be said of a lot of modern cars at the moment!

It’s just such a pity that so few cars are available with a manual these days, so there’s not much choice for us that wish one!

I didn't expect so many people would say manual. I'm sick of changing gears and I just think an automatic would be so much more easy to drive.

I'm not interested in sports modes or anything think that, I just want a more simple life. I've been told autos are hotter on juice but I'd put up with that for an easier stressful life.

I used to think that as well - but the autos I've driven have a manual mode as well so you can change up and down the gears yourself. Actually more fun to drive than I thought and I haven't looked back after over 20 years of driving manual cars

I’d be happy if they swapped my van for an auto-30k plus is a lot of clutch pressing. But, currently looking at a weekend fun machine and I’m generally ruling out the tiptronic ones as I prefer to drive one a bit more connected

Lots of old myths surrounding autos but modern automatics are more economical and can change gear faster than a manual.

My box already has the next gear ready and waiting

Always had manual but current car is auto and would never go back. Having a manual courtesy car for 3 weeks compounded that thought.

Auto is smooth and effortless. Isn't about being lazy as some folk say. It's just not as old hat as changing gears manually

Had to take an automatic Volvo XC40 while on holiday last year. Beautiful car in all respects, apart from the auto gearbox, I mean, what's with waiting for a car to decide what gear to use as you turn in to a roundabout ffs......
