The weird collective nouns we refer to today are nonsense for good reason. They were nonsense way back in the day when mischievous monks wrote satirical books for the burgeoning market of the newly literate elite who could afford such things. They were never meant to be taken seriously, but they were and over time became wrongly accepted as correct. Silly monks.
