I have easily solved all dilemmas regarding how old my kids must be before they do these things by simply not having any

Oh god the constant parental dilemma of making sure your children aren't feeling odd compared to their contemporaries and keeping their expectations realistic.

If I was the parent of a youngster now and I agreed to them having a smart phone I would insist on parental locks and a no secrets policy which involved them showing me their phone if asked.

I think I'd say 11 possibly 13.

I'd give my child a mobile when they start walking to school on their own.

There's a danger they'll be mugged for it though, so I'd tell them to be wary of who's around when you use it.

I had my first phone at 11.

Not a smart phone as they weren't out then but I could still text and call my friends.

Both of my eldest children were 11 when they got a phone, so I could keep track of them for starting secondary school.

11. Purely for starting secondary school and the ability to track him if needed, as he walks to / from school and different parent’s house.

My daughter has had a smart phone for years. She gets a hand-me-down. Only just got her a SIM card recently. She is 11.

Ours were in year 6 (not age 6) as it’s when the school encourage them to walk to school on their own. The phones had very limited applications and locked themselves at set times.
