The number is the measurement of the chest under the boob, so 36 inches around for example. The cup size, or letter, is ‘very approximately’ an additional inch for each letter at the widest part of the bust.

So a 36c is someone 39 inches around the bust, and 36 around the torso.

Cheers! Never sure why is seems so esoteric, or why some guys fascinate over cup size when it means nothing without the band size. Someone 4 inches bigger around the bust is doing to look very different if they are a 32 (1/8th bigger) or a 48 (1/12th bigger) band

Cupsize isn't always equal from woman to woman.

What I mean is, the height/perkiness will vary.

The shape and drop.

The width from outer rib to breast bone.

Take the bra off and two sets that wear the same size can look vastly different

I guess the inch system gives an indication, but shape is equally important over mere size, so as you say it’s a guideline where to start for many, not always the right answer. I imagine the shape of bra, whether there’s underwire of if it’s balcony etc makes a huge difference. Even which hook you use (and I believe, that the reason they often have multiple hooks is that you should start with the loosest when the bra is new, and as the elastic started to stretch and loose it’s bounce (in old bras anyway) you tighten it by using the next hook in….

But then, like waist sizes for men, I might be a 33, but there are 33 waist jeans that fit great, and ones that fit awfully - just a guide

Sorry I'm a bra fitter and this isn't strictly true.

We only measure for band and cup by eye. The but in this is...the band isn't always the same as the measure measurements. If a woman measures 28 we would add 4 and fit a 32 band ...this is then a sliding scale up to about 40 when it is like for like.

Is it so hard to believe someone can retain this bit of simple received wisdom I mean, even if you didn’t know it, I reckon half of us could work it out from first principles, we all understand numbers for collars, jackets and trousers etc, not hard to extrapolate that the only thing you have to work out of what a b and c mean, but you already know it’s roughly speaking an increasing measurement of size so, say, and extra ‘x’ per cup?! Ok, DD makes that a little more confusing and I have idea where that nonsense comes from

My issue with fit was never cup but strap length from shoulder down. I've a long torso so the adjustable straps always ended up just too short

Yes the smaller the chest the more proportionally bigger the cup, but the bigger the chest Means the cup holds more volume - so the boobs themselves are bigger. A 38C holds pretty much the same volume as a 36D.

Yes. To make it more complicated, cups don’t run strictly alphabetically - so you get double letters sometimes pushing in an extra inch.

In the U.K. cup sizes run something like this

I always like it in the story section where a guy who clearly doesn't understand bra sizes puts something like "She was a petit size 6 with 46DD."
