"This is my first post in the forums so please be kind, i've been lurking for a while. My "diet" starts again properly tomorrow. I've lost 4 stone in the past 14 months doing weightwatchers online and hoping that 2013 will see me lose another 3 stone. For that I'm going to have to get off my butt and do some exercise though and I am such a lazy mare " Go you! The reason the fasted training works is that first thing in the morning, your blood sugar level is at a 24hr low and if you then cycle, walk or jog etc on an empty stomach, your body gets the energy it needs from its on-board source - fat cells. I used to do this back in the 90's when I was in a position work-wise to cycle the 23 miles each way to work (weather was better then than 2012!) and lost over 4 stone in no time. | |||

Don't know where you get this from, but any cycling which involves a mixture of speeds and cadences will burn calories and fat as well as any other. The least amount of calorie and/or fat burn happens on medium distance cycling at a constant speed, as you are not using as large amount of burning effort as you would for repeated slowing/acceleration, nor are you cycling for long enough to achieve a time-based burn. | |||

Though running and cycling are my preference I accept they are not always the best option. I get annoyed when someone like Octavius Stunt states his opinion and hos preference as fact. Of course people can use core and weight training to lose weight but to dismiss anaeorobic work is laughable. The reality is all exercise is good. Be that gym classes, Zumba, Wii Fit, even just walking to the shops. It all adds to the calories out side of the equation. | |||

" try reading what i said again mister, i did not advocate weight training over aerobic exercise at all. In fact i regularly run 8 mile a day mon sat with mixes of fartleks and interval training, 13 mile "LSD"on sunday also adding hill training a few times a month. For running or any cardio exercise to be effective in burning fat instead of glycogen you need to be doing it for at least an hour. Cardio only burns cals while you exercise, weight training burns cals post exercise. In fact i thinbk i was suggesting a combination of both cardio weights and a sensible diet. | |||

Although I do enjoy weight training so will be doing that too. I used to do the gym 5 days a week but illness and lethargy got in the way in 2012. I am hoping for more motivation this year. | |||

I didnt claim to be an expert but i forwarded Ranulph Fiennes as one, and his book with contributions from Dr Mike stroud, possibly the worlds leading expert on endurace, fitness and nutrition as being very helpful. It is a fact however that there are exercises that are more effecive at burning calories. Knowing how difficult it is for people to maintain motivation when they arent getting the results they hope for i attempted to point people in the right direction, at the same time as busting the long held myth that cardio is the most effecive exercise for weight loss. Having studied fitness instrucing for 2 years and reading 100's of books of the many thousands that are out there, the book i recommended was by miles the most useful tool i found on how to lead a more healthy life. Hardly surprising as its written by the worlds greatest living explorer and no doubt the fittest man on the planet for his age. | |||

All the exercise plans in the world (even Aphrodites protein based one!!!! ) won't work if you don't summon up the motivation from somewhere - and at times it is VERY hard to do so - to actually put them in to action. In fact i regularly run 8 mile a day mon sat with mixes of fartleks and interval training, 13 mile "LSD"on sunday also adding hill training a few times a month. For running or any cardio exercise to be effective in burning fat instead of glycogen you need to be doing it for at least an hour. Cardio only burns cals while you exercise, weight training burns cals post exercise. In fact i thinbk i was suggesting a combination of both cardio weights and a sensible diet." I agree | |||

I think WW is a healthy life style rather than a diet as they recommend exercise as well. I, male, lost 40 lbs the other year using it to just log food and keep track of what I was shovelling in, couldn't recommend it higher. Plus tis free, easy and you don't have to go to fat club." Sounds great and as you said it is free and surely suitable for some people. Those who have a fair amount to lose and have struggled over the years often do need the personal ongoing support of "fat club" meetings. Weight loss for many people is nt a simple matter of cutting down calories as there are other, more complex factors that have prevented them from being successful before. Again I think it is horses for courses and whatever suits the individual. | |||

It is as simple as cutting down calories, its a basic law of physics. If you dont supply your body with more energy than it needs then you will lose weight. No illness, drug, or psychological condition will ever change this. I know there are, and have worked through myself, many many reasons people find it hard to lose weight but lets not pretend it ever boils down to something other than eating too much | |||
