either river or surf? I'm thinking of getting a new hobby and am thinking of getting more outdoor sport.

I ride a bike occaisionally and walk the dog but most of the exercise I get is indoors.

I tried it years ago on outward bound course in North Wales and loved it.

We live 5miles from the sea and with the recent weather down here there's plenty of water around.

I was thinking of getting one of the those "sit on" kayaks as they're reasonably low cost, but would consider a conventional "sit in" one if the price was right.

Good choice or not?

We both kayak, and currently own a sit on top! Great fun for both the ocean and river! Go for it man!!

For general river and near coast I'd go for sit on top. Longer the better (as in lots of things!), as better directional stability, but shorter still good for general use.

use to do a fair bit in my time.

but now just stick the rowing machine in front of the telly and use that when watching a movie.

Are they as stable as the "sit in" type?

Most of the sit ins have a weight limit and seem you have to get the correct size.

I'm around 15.1/2 st, 220lbs/100kgs and a lot of "sit ins" are rated below that.

There are loads of "sit ons" though that will easily accomodate me.

Jack its the most fun you can have shrinking you bawls to the size of frozen peas..... Sea or river is fantastic,,, stability and rolling isn't an issue once you get to grips with the basics....go for it you love it...

After the Olympics this was the sport that I fancied taking up. But a. I live in a first floor flat so difficult to store the kayak and b. I would need to wait until the better weather. But I must say it looks like lots of fun x

What a disappointment I thought you were interested in the art of sexual kayaking which involves the tongue, warm butter and a meaty buttock crack.

its great fun..

never used a sit on though..

a Canadian is good for 2 of you pootling along..

lots of clubs have beginner sessions usually in a pool to have a go at the basics etc..

enjoy..
