If your Scottish ..happy burns night x

If your English ...stand back and admire another country that hasn't lost its identity ,and still celebrates its heritage ....#bringbackstgeorgesdaycelebrations

Our country celebrates st Patrick's day more than the Irish

When did they abolish St Georges day?

And how exactly did we used to celebrate it?

It used to be celebrated in true British style , village fetes , shows , Morris dancing , pubs used to have all the flags up .

National anthem , flags etc

But it died off , it didnt get abolished .

That is my point ..we would all rather go and drink Guinness and dance to the pogues , rather than celebrate our own great country .

X

Some friends invited me to a joint Chinese New Year and Burns Night party called a Chinese-Burns Night. Didn’t want to go but they twisted my arm...

(We don't celebrate St George's Day anymore because being English isn't really anything to be proud of.)

I would agree. Ive never been in england on a st georges day, but you should absolutely be celebrating it fervently, like any other country on its national day.

Why that isnt currently being done is beyond me

I think we're now at the point where even the most jingoistic nationalists have had to admit that we're an international laughing stock. Celebrating that would make us look even more daft!

Guess Morris dancing just isn’t as fun.

Personally, I’d love to watch a bunch of older men frolicking but I guess people just find an excuse to go to the pub and drink Guinness to be way more fun

Laughing stock? Not quite. Most countries don't pay us very much attention to even care to laugh. Behind the scenes the UK is still a player, up front nobody gives a shit enough to take notice for long. They have no clue about what goes on here outside of big events like QEII death and other royal family controversies.

There are bigger, more interesting targets to pick at.

I can only speak from my own experience of friends and colleagues in Europe, plus one or 2 in the States. They view us with a mixture of pity and incredulity at the moment, and the European press is very interested in what's going on in UK politics.

Do you read any European press or are you just guessing?

Friends, family, colleagues, and actually having lived in a good number of them for varying lengths. Not just mainland europe, Iceland, all of Scandinavia, the states, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, the devil's anus that is Australia, South Africa, Japan.

Shit gets said, a comment is made, then it gets forgotten quickly.

"Shit gets said, a comment is made, then it gets forgotten quickly. "

I speak to people in Germany, Holland, Spain and Finland on a daily basis. Whereas we might open a conversation with "How's the weather?", they ALWAYS open the conversation with "What the f**k are you guys doing to yourselves???". It's getting embarrassing, so I'm sorry, and maybe the people I deal with are more politically engaged, but they ARE talking about it, a lot!

But sure what are they asking about? Is it just the usual brexit guffawing from outsiders?

Yes, nothing says I’m proud to be English like celebrating a Turkish/Greek man slaying a creature that doesn’t exist.

La la land

There's plenty to be proud of or to celebrate about England/English.

People from all over the world go and visit Stonehenge, visit castles, go to Liverpool to see where the Beatles played, see the engineering feats of Brunel, go and see the places that inspired the Brontë sisters, Beatrix Potter and many many more. There's lots to celebrate proud of what England has contributed to mainstream culture.

At the moment it's mostly about the corruption of our politicians, but yes, they can't believe how stupid we were when it comes to Brexit.

Yeah to be honest that all sounds a bit cliched now at this stage, i dont think thats representative of the rest of the world.

And as for corruption amongst politicians, if they think thats an english thing then they really are taking the piss

To you yes, very likely because you are in the UK, it's a talking point relevant to you. They go about their lives likely not giving it much of a thought until a mention of it pops up on TV or in reference. General population just don't care, its not much of a national talking point amongst themselves. We are simply not that important or relevant to them in their lives.

Some individuals might be interested, that's no surprise. For the majority, not so much.

Happy Burns day everyone. Most people would be proud of their heritage and that's how it should be. However it is true that the world in looking at what is happening in this country at the moment as we have somewhat become a bit of a ridicule or at least a fascination as to what it's happening with our politics and life in general. It's not a party political statement btw, just a fact that people I know all over the world just seem to ask what's going on over here at the moment as it's a stark contrast to what they have been used to.
