Arguably the best ever rear engined camper.

Let's face it, the only things good about them were a rear engine which effectively took up no interior space as you slept on top of it, a completely flat floor with walk through from the cab and a wide sliding (except earlier model) side door ideal for annexing a tent to.

The T3 (type 25) was a much sturdier and more usable vehicle but didn't, apparently, have the same cult appeal.

I happily traded the cult appeal for a vehicle which appealed to me more than the cult one did!

Mine was a converted panel van with very utility styled furniture, which was all I wanted as it still left plenty of space for carrying cargo when not camping. Also tin topped as I wanted to load canoes and other lengthy items on conventional roof bars. internal standing height was not a necessity for my usage.

My above post should have been in response to prices. My type 25 cost me around £7000 when it was ten years old and I got another 15 years out of it and sold it as a restoration project for considerably less. My investment was in fun, not capital.

There's a second hand one in my local dealers for 90 thousand pounds and a panel van for 27 thousand pounds.

I can't see the money in them or the huge price difference between the two. Okay one has a bed in the back and the other hasn't, but fuck me

I don't know what model they are but I saw a couple of them today when I drived past my local VW dealer. They certainly stand out.

I find when it comes to buying a new motor never listen to one dealers opinion. Many times I've been told they can't get a model and after I've phoned around the country one pops up.

The VW Buzz Style is built to customer Spec, Electric sliders, voice control, powered retractable tow bar, Powered tailgate, 230v outlets etc.

As opposed to the Buzz Life which is an of the shelf model.

You tried a few dealers, I guess. When I order a van to my spec I always ask around. Last time my local dealers said they couldn't get one for a year. I phoned around and had one much sooner.

There is no dispute that rear engined vans make excellent small campers simply because, with a bed over it, the engine compartment is not wasted space. Next best space to length ratio is the cab over engine format like the Mazda Bongo but you sacrifice the benefit of walking through from front to middle.

My Type 25 had the most usable space, without any doubt. Currently have a Honda Stepwgn which was designed for 'park anywhere' nooky, not camping but should be ok on a site with a tent annexe.

"Hi T6 here"

Attractive looking van with the sort of character I like but I read in a review that there is no space for the driver to rest their left foot.

If that is true, is it the old story of the UK version being the poor relation of its continental cousin and there is plenty of space on our passenger side?

I've noticed you have written in forums about UK vehicles lacking behind the same make vehicles in Europe, but I've never noticed any difference.

Highly recommended O Connors in Oakhampton, just on the Devon/Cornwall border....used them in the past (before I owned one)

Unfortunately, most British drivers nowadays will only be familiar with vehicles which are bodged from LHD models and will not have experienced the subtle advantages and disadvantages of the different designs unless buying grey imports from dedicated by design right hand drive Japan. Most people would not be aware that there is a difference to notice. Ignorance (meant in the politest way) is bliss.

My one man campaign is never going to turn the tide. It all happened relentlessly over the last 30 years or more and won't change back now.

But when, for example, you struggle with the wrist gymnastics of selecting first or reverse on a manual VW Type 25 and then think, about which side a German driver sits in relation to the same stick, it all starts falling into place.

Same with the pedal area space when the engine compartment intrusion into the cabin is offset to suit the original market..

That would likely involve mounting the engine, transmission, fuel injectors and exhaust manifold (possibly requiring total engine re-design) the other way round and for a minority market would cost far too much.

All we can do is enjoy the good aspects of the vehicles and for decades the rear engined layout was exceptional suited to camping as the engine was under the main bed and thus maximised the interior space.

The other great thing was easy walk through from the front seats. Lots of users hardly ever get in via the driver's door, especially when using narrow parking spaces!

It would be great to have an electric Buzz as a fun plaything but galling to pay over the odds for something really designed for the ergonomics of our continental cousins.

Whatever a dual mass flywheel is, they sound like bad news and are not good for the reputation of manufacturers who fit them.

Dual mass are intend to reduce 'vibration' (ahem.. not something most of us try to avoid here )

Particularly on 'torquey' (have not checked correct English) diesel engines, they can be changed to a cheaper single mass, but you can guess the implications..

Sadly we paid well over the odds for our 800 special only to find that it had rotted from the inside out so that's currently sat on the drive awaiting me to get the welder out, having learned a very valuable and yet to be expensive lesson I picked up a bare 2001 for peanut's and couldn't be happier with it so we now have his n hers vans

I'd take a solid state fly wheel and deal with the minimal extra vibration over the extortionate cost of a duel mass any day of the week but then I don't like modern vehicles they are too smooth with very little driver feedback, it's like driving a cloud.
