Why can't I work out the freeball!

I love snooker but i still can't understand the freeball??

After your opponent fouls, you can hit/pot any ball you like on the table without giving away a foul yourself

Isn’t the freeball available if your opponent commits a foul, and leaves you unable to hit the colour ball you’re meant to be hitting next?

. Yes that’s correct but you need to be able to see all of the ball fully otherwise it’s a free ball but you can’t snooker behind the free ball
