Thornbury Litter

A man from Thornbury, once fameous for it's cider production but now pretty much ruined by overspill from Bristol has been fined £558 for discarding a cigarette butt on the floor. £150 fine and the rest in court costs.

Court for a ciggie. Is this OTT. Once the smokers ruled the roost but these new squeaky clean types are settling old scores. What's going on here guys ?

It's all over the news

I believe he was fined for littering, not the fact it was a cigarette. He could have paid the fine within 10 days and would have got away with paying £75. He didn't so was taken to court and ordered to pay more.

It's his own fault for littering and not paying the fine promptly.

But court ,?

Waste of time and expense surely

Cigarette butt's are a massive pollution issue.

Trillions are discarded each year and the filters contain microplastics.

As an ex smoker I always stubbed mine out and put the butt's in bins once I realised the mess they made, but I'll admit to just dumping them on the ground when younger or throwing them out of a car window.

It's not really any different to any other form of littering is it and maybe some hefty fines will deter people and encourage better behaviour?

Hopefully he will put his disgusting dog ends in the rubbish or take them home if no suitable bin exists next time. Why shouldnt people be done for littering.?

if everyone littered all the time, would the cost not stack up?

The cost in prosecuting this one case is worth it if it shows the law has teeth.

I wonder how much a court case costs. Versus court costs.

Who can blame him.. where he lives has been ruined by the overspill from Bristol..he probably thought adding a ciggie butt wouldn't be a problem.

It will have been a council enforcement officer, like a traffic warden. He will have been issued with a Civil Penalty Notice, refused to pay so taken to court. No different to parking offences.

It only went to court because he didn't pay the fine. He had already admitted littering so the fine was duly issued. It wasn't paid so he was taken to court and (part of) the costs of the hearing were lumped into the new fine.

The law comes down tough on litter louts. If only it was as tough on muggers burglars and raypists….especially raypist police officers!
