Has anyone here started going to the gym to loose those Christmas pounds?? If so, how's it going for you, do you think you'll stick to it?

I've been going since last July and i've really found it beneficial, body confidence has massively gone up and i look and feel so much better about myself.

I’ve been going since Dec at work, but finding it hard to keep motivated to get out of bed early to hit it before work. Once there I enjoy it but it’s the initial arriving that’s the challenge.

Is there a choice to go after work? I find that what works for me is going with someone. Could you go with someone from work?

I randomly messaged a guy that i knew from years ago, who also goes to the gym and we both go several times a week now. Become quite good friends also!

I don’t like January at my gym, it’s overcrowded for about 6 weeks before it returns to normal. I began an attempt at transforming myself a couple of years ago. There’s been bumps along the road but I’ve steadily and consistently improved. I’m now the fittest fat bloke I know.

I take my hat off to anyone new starting the gym, it can be daunting walking in there with big machines and weights. Hopefully if you’ve started you’ll stick to it

I’m just starting back as of yesterday going regularly again. I’m pretty certain I’ll stick to it + I have someone giving me the motivation even more so now

Yeah it can be a bit of a pain at times when it's over crowded. Good effort for being a fit fat bloke, Ha!

Good effort!! It's not easy initially but it does feel so much better when you are seeing results!

I joined the other day but I haven't been yet as I'm a bit under the weather. I am terrified though!

Hope you start to feel better soon

How come your terrified?? It's honestly not that scary. My advice would be to go with someone if you can. If that doesn't work then get a member of staff to show you around, get an idea of the equipment they have then go home, look at some videos on Youtube for specific body areas you want to target, come up with a plan and you'll know exactly where you need to be/what equipment you need to use when you go again. That way you won't look lost x

Don’t understand the January thing, anyone can decide to go any time of year.

I applaud anyone making genuine effort to get in shape but half them will have given up in a few weeks.train mostly at home during January to avoid crowds

Not all that North of North London

I like that this thread, other than a couple of digs is overwhelmingly supportive of gym newbies and not moaning about them.

It takes courage to go to the gym when your self conscious about your lack of fitness and have no idea how anything works.

I love seeing the newbies and hope they have a successful fitness journey

local, but not too local

My mate has roped me into starting going again. Tbh I’d be better just doing a starvation diet for a bit. Like that show where they go and live off whelks on an island for months. I don’t like whelks so should be pretty dramatic.

I started going to a “spit & sawdust” as I’d call it gym in June last year. It’s mainly bodybuilders that use it and it’s basic, no showers, no changing rooms but the friendliest gym I’ve ever been too.

I’m lucky that one of the owners is training me, she’s took me from being unable to lift anything more than 25 kilos, to being able to shoulder shrug 180kg.

It’s made a vast difference to my health, both physically and mentally, I no longer feel as self conscious.

Unfortunately after being attacked from behind in a pub, I’ve had to stop training due to injuries sustained for a few weeks or months, so I will miss the January rush lol.

We all have to start somewhere, it's something i've become quite passionate about tbf. Love seeing new folk there.

I thibk on the whole most people are supportive, just some muppers that give the gym community a bad name

Sorry to hear that :/

Glad you've turned it around and started going again. Such a good feeling when you see improvements!

We’ve been regular gym goers for several years but in January the machines are often blocked by people sitting there taking selfies.

Roll on February again

I'm the same. I'm not a gym person but I'm actually avoiding most of my classes for a few weeks while they're full of newbies. Don't get me wrong, I've got a lot of respect for people starting out on their journey and was once there myself, I just want to do my workout when it's less busy.

When I get back to training, I’m upping my game. The muscles I’d built saved me from worse injuries than I got, just got to hope my knee wasn’t to damaged from being stamped on and that my ribs repair quickly.
