"Alexander the Great.

As much as I like his story he died at 33 from alcoholism, left no legacy."

Genghis Khan, founder of the largest continous empire in history. Also left quite a legacy. Here's a snippet from a website about him.

Genghis Khan, the fearsome Mongolian warrior of the 13th century, may have done more than rule the largest empire in the world; according to a recently published genetic study, he may have helped populate it too.

An international group of geneticists studying Y-chromosome data have found that nearly 8 percent of the men living in the region of the former Mongol empire carry y-chromosomes that are nearly identical. That translates to 0.5 percent of the male population in the world, or roughly 16 million descendants living today.

"Genghis Khan, founder of the largest continous empire in history."

He began the empire but it became three times the size after his death so the largest contiguous empire was attributed to his sons and grandchildren. So it can be argued one of the later Khans founded the largest.Genghis was only interested in Mongolia and destroying China. His successors determined to expand their empire, as far as Vienna, Moscow, all of China, into India and as far as the Middle East.

A fascinating dynasty

John Lilburne (the Leveller), or William Tyndale (translated the Bible into English)

I’m drawn to people who have strengths where I feel I have weaknesses.

These men were singleminded forces of nature, never shirked from the fight.

The most interesting people have something eating at them from inside, propelling then forward - you wouldn’t want to be them, but they can be inspirational.

Greatness

"Solon found it difficult to pronounce on a man's happiness during his life, how much more difficult it must be to adjudge on a man's greatness? True greatness in the world is not found set upon a hill for the vulgar crowd to see. On the contrary, my seventy years' experience has taught me that the truly great are often those of whom and of whose greatness the world knows nothing during their lifetime. God alone is judge of true greatness because He knows men's hearts."

"Malcolm X.

Rational, intellectual, charismatic.

Criminal, racist, violent thug. All a question of perspective. He was convicted multiple times and jailed. Advocated racism and violence to support his views.

They used to say the same about Nelson Mandela.

I would add Michael Collins and Marie Curie.

Because Mandela was a racist and a terrorist. He could have been released from prison much earlier if he renounced violence, he refused "

Mandela a racist?, nonsense

Another one led by the nose.He was a terrorist and his violence was aimed at white people.Yes,I know the argument "freedom fighter" but not to white Afrikaans he wasn't. His wife of course was more inclusive and killed her own people too.

He carried out terrorist acts....doesn't make him a racist.

"I've had this discussion before, but organising a piss up. I would use the time machine to collect some of the world's most famous hellraisers for a pub crawl around the Monopoly board in London.

Alex Higgins, Oliver Reid, George Best, Hunter S Thompson, Betty Ford, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Winston Churchill, Earnest Hemingway, Frank Sinatra and Boris Yeltsin. Finishing in an upmarket venue in Mayfair. "

What a ridiculous comment. Have a word with yourself.

Take them to a local boozer instead.

Give Boris a couple of quid for the juke box.

Get Alex Higgins tanked up and let him loose on the pool table (winner stays on, of course).

And get Ollie Reed and Rich Harris on the oche for a game of darts.

Georgie Best can try his luck with Betty Ford.

Liz and Rich Burton will end up arguing and having a domestic.

When the State use force, violence, oppression and terror, we are told it is justice, law and order.

When the oppressed seek justice, we are told their terrorists.

Just look at the media representations of the PLO.

I don't think he was particularly rational when he was espousing Farrakhan's nonsense. But I'm impressed by his intellect, passion, rhetoric and the fact he kept evolving.

Terrorism never works... We never negotiate with terrorists.. OK then. Or do we?

When he was faced with the most appalling violence against himself and black South Africans, why would he ever renounce violence? It’s the only language oppressors understand

Strong agree with this last post.

He did renounce violence when the South African government renounced violence and the process towards reform was properly set in motion.

It’s an act of arrogance for people who are not brutally suppressed to tell those that are to renounce violence.

Heard a radio show about paddy mayne...talk about a full and significant life... Sure he had more than a few dinner stories to tell.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair "Paddy" Mayne, DSO & Three Bars (11 January 1915 – 14 December 1955) was a British Army officer from Newtownards, capped for Ireland and the British Lions at rugby union, lawyer, amateur boxer, and a founding member of the Special Air Service (SAS)

Actually if you read his auto biography you will see his life journey.. it’s very interesting

His father murdered by the klu

Klux klan… his mother sent to a mental asylum, he survived on the streets and he was a criminal… then was sent to prison… where he was brainwashed by someone who told him false ways of a certain faith that he followed, but he stated that what ever he said when he was under their guidance was all false, he was brainwashed into believing that all white people were devils.. but in his auto biography he explained that growing up at that time and the way he was treated by white people is the reason he was easily led to believed this.. it was only his journey to Mecca where he realised that the faith he had chosen would accept all races, when he returned he wanted to preach this to all the people of America to help build community relations… but the organisation that he had left and wanted nothing to do with had him assassinated
