So are we saying it is easier to choose wisely on future meets once we have had a successful meet the day before?

I have heard that - and actually I dont make New Years Resolutions for that reason. I kind of decide on any changes i want to make during the month of December and I try and implement their beginning before 1st January so it does not feel like a New Years Resolution

What about the Chinese New Year instead? I've celebrated that before but didn't make any resolution.

I suppose in just comes down to tradition, out with the old and in with the new

And some info from google...

The ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts.

The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named.

In the Medieval era, the knights took the "peacock vow" at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry.

I think the 'new year resolution' has religious origins. Different religions made promises to their god at the beginning of each year

Julie and XredX... that makes a lot of sense.. that the resolutions are ultimately based in some religious beliefs, going along with the thought of sacrifice or something.

Taking this a bit further... what do we need to sacrifice to the God of Sex?;-)

I never have any new year's resolutions.

If I want to make a change, then I just do it. Why wait a year?!!

I started my diet on November 30th, took a few days off for xmas then back on it tomorrow.

From what I have read regardless of creed yes it is custom to do so.

Take Catholics for example lent is a time they give up things.

You know I could never understand the sense of that. For example of giving up meat... to me that would be no sacrifice whatsoever.

The tradition behind a new year resolution that sets it apart from others is it is made at the start of whatever year you may celebrate and kept for that whole year.

So come November you've done it

Well New year being a celebration and Lent yes is to sacrifice and I would definitely struggle to give meat up.
