This is likely going to be a sleeper for a lot of people that don't know about the game, even though it is getting a fair bit of advertisment. So bringing attention to what SHOULD be a very good adaptation of an exception story.

I'm sceptical about how it just won't live up to what the original game was able to pull off with its story in the first game, but should be a good watch regardless of being a fan of the game or not.

HBO series starting 16th Jan. Don't want to say too much due to specific spoilers.

"Have you watched it yet? Watching tonight after work. Hope it will be good! "

Yeah, really good.

If you know the game, then some of the scenes and sequences are directly replicated from that.

A few changes here and there, some scenes filling in the blanks and a bit of back stories etc.

Bella Ramsey is exceptional at getting the attitude of Ellie right. Pedro not really hitting the mark as Joel, he needs to be much colder, hardened, and grumpier. But still great acting regardless.

If recent adaptations of other works are anything to go by, I wouldn't hold out hope of a good adaptation.

Countless examples of disrespect or disavowing of the lore to fit "modern audiences" have happened the past few years. You get endless sjw messaging and character race / gender swapping. Almost always results in a dumpster fire of a product.

I read somewhere that the creator has stated that it will be two seasons and end at the end of the second game. And not be dragged out and bastardised like GoT etc.

Hopefully it is good.

First episode is as good as accurate to the story with some minor changes that don't really detract from things, more respect for the source in that first episode than in most other adaptions of late. More a case of just changing a few scenes.

If they keep that up, it will be a great adaption.

"Amazing adaptation. Can’t fault anything "

Can't fault but can certainly critique.

I didn't mind the changes they made but at the same time based upon events of the game, they didn't need to make those changes.

The way Ellie meets Joel and Tess. Could have happened exactly like, and word for word as it did in the game. Joel's mission prior to meeting should not be a thing, he should be far more reluctant and his motivation entirely different.

They didn't want Joel and Tess to be gun smugglers, so changed a big part of Joel's attitude and relationship with (not saying for spoilers) again, not bad changes but more changes they didn't need to do.

As a stand alone it was amazing, well acted and emotional. Gay or not, the emotions apply no matter who you fall in love with. It was a part of the story and a character I was looking forward to seeing, unfortunately I didn't get that nor the interactions between characters that now never will. I liked what they did none the less.

I highly doubt that, in fact I know they won't, because of how it ended, the interaction was with Ellie and Bill. Ain't no flashback going to fix that change.

They changed it for two reasons (reasons I'm fine with)

1. They did not want to show a gay character as a crazy lonely paranoid fool

2. The story has enough gloom in it so they wanted to inject some bittersweet moments that at least give the emotional roller-coaster.

It was certainly a filler episode, and went a long ass journey just to tell Joel he should change from his old view and focus on saving Tess (obviously unknown to Bill is now Ellie). It provided next to nothing for Joel and Ellie's story.

But it was an amazingly crafted episode of television.

Episode three was outstanding. One of the best pieces of television I’ve seen since Black Mirror’s San Junipero.

So far The Last of Us has been just another zombie story - beautifully produced but nothing new. This episode elevated it way above that. Glorious stuff.

Depends on your definition I guess, I would say initially they are infected but the brief explanation of Cordyceps in the episode 1 intro hints that they progress to being zombies (mostly dead and manipulated by the fungus).

For all intents and purposes they are zombies. That is essentially what the basis for the game was but they wanted a twist on it in an already done to death genre. Easily interchangeable and you wouldn't really know any different other than the long time infected Clickers and Bloaters in appearance.

Pretty much this. They aren't zombie undead, but rather a fungus that grows in and out of them and takes over their minds. They dont want to eat people, just spread the fungus.

It's a real thing that happens to ants!

I wish they hadn’t made it in to a show. So many people judge gamers (maybe just my own personal experience to tbf) and I just wish some stories would be left to them. It was well acted, written greatly with exceptional emotional peaks, music and tone choices on point. It managed to hit people with the feels, and it hit them hard. Showing much more than just what seemed on the surface.

It is also getting praise for being ballsy enough to focus so much screen time to the relashionship two gay men. Instead of being hidden as a 2 second background thing or a full shove down your throat agenda fuck.

It was done naturally and respectfully to everyone.

It’s partly about playing to the strengths of the medium. Games are good at some things, TV is good at others. Books are good at other things and comics are different again.

TV drama is good at emotion. Good at long character arcs. Good at building empathy (or antipathy) for characters. And also good at changing tone - compartmentalising a story into discrete chunks/episodes, which can then have different tones to them.

A TV drama that was all action, every episode would feel flat. You need shades of grey.

I think they got into some shit for basing Ellie in the game off an actress who didn’t play any part or voice act etc. There was some legal stuff about image rights beign abused to create Ellie. So it makes sense they didn't try to nail her identically to the game and get in teh same shit twice

The thing is, it only deviated from the game at the end. It was focused on backstory for Bill, we got a lot of hints of Bill and Frank's relationship in game so they had free reign for that stuff. But how it ended is where the difference is and is what has me torn.

Stand alone story the ending was amazing, as adapting from the game I don't feel it needed to end as it did is all. I'm torn on it, but I can't fault what they gave us as being anything but good.

I don’t get the need for 100% faithful recreation. The Lord of the Rings films deviated, amalgomated and diversified several key aspects, and were the better for it, as films. This is no different. If we want a 100% faithful recreation, go stream someone playing the game well and completing it without dieing. No-one misses or wants to watch having Joel opening every draw and cupboard he passes to find ammo and craft upgrades, or that he can't hear through walls. No-one wants to see a 40 minutes gunfight with endlessly spawning bad guys, no matter how much fun it is to play it. I’ve only seen EP1 & 2, and look forward to them replacing fight after sneak after cinematic moment, after fight, after sneak, after craft….with some emotional content and exploring of the human condition. We’re watching this story when it’s on TV, not playing it.

Story elements are not gameplay elements. The story elements are quite easily adapted from cutscenes (and even some gameplay scenes) with next to no changes. The majority of the game was done in such a way that I could have been transfered from game to live action in that exact way. It is cinematic be design. It was originally written as a TV show to begin with (that was Druckmans dream, to be a tv/movie writer).

Book to live action, especially something as expansive as Lord of the Rings is much different and not as simple to transfer to film, even more so when it is has such a large gap between it first being written and finally adapted.

Shake things up and give us Bill's back story, great I loved that. Adds more to the character, but then what they did by the end changed Bill as a character in the first place.

I just don't see the point in making changes for the sake of changes. None of the changes so far are in terms of adaption simplicity.

Changing the guns at the start to be about a battery

Changing Joel's motivation to go out and find Tommy

Changing Tess's death to be by infected instead of the ambush by FEDRA.

All changes that didn't need to be changed to make things more simple and while they don't change the ending, it changes a lot of who the characters are at times.

They are still respecting the source and that is the main thing for me, but still would have been nice to see the same points taken from the game directly to screen.

"I don’t get the need for 100% faithful recreation.

All good points. I’d just be wary of assuming that the first ‘cut’ of the story, as it were is necessarily always the best by default. Druckman created both, so there’s not so much a ‘They changed it’ where they = the TV people, he changed it himself. You have to assume he knows what he’s doing, maybe he was never happy with some characters motivations or actions, and wanted to rectify that.

You said you loved the backstory changes for Bill, well maybe that was how he envisaged it all along, with such a good back story etc that by definition means the end result of the character is different than the - perhaps 10 years ago they couldn’t really work out how to incorporate that into the game because it didn't drive the plot or gameplay forward, so the game version of Bill is actually the compromised one as they had to go with a slightly different 1 dimensional character for whom a back story could be more easily just assumed by a player without loose threads.

I’m really looking forward to watching E3 tonight by the way, and you gave me things to think about when I do.

I actually prefer the changes you listed above.

The guns thing - we got that they were smugglers anyway in the TV show. Changing to battery to find Tommy meant the first episode itself had some drive and understanding seeing as we had already met Tommy and it makes sense Joel would want to find him. Also makes sense Marlene needed a car battery too to take Ellie away.

The FEDRA thing - I think it was to include more infected as we aren't going to be seeing them all the time (as that's alot of the gameplay sections in the game) Also, realistically why would FEDRA really care enough to follow them? Again, in the game it was for gameplay.

I'm really not getting the hype.

I've never played the game and I'm not hating it but I haven't seen anything new or groundbreaking yet.

It's an amalgam of I am Legend, The Walking Dead and many other apocalyptic shows.

It looks cinematic but it's no more emotionally engaging than TWD was at the same point.

I'm still waiting to be shocked or grossed out or even for a slightly scary moment.

Despite never having played the game I know what's about to happen long before it does.

It's an easy watch which in itself speaks volumes but beyond that I seem to be missing what everyone else is seeing.

Yeah it won't be for everyone. I think the writing so far has been miles ahead of the walking dead. It's overall theme (having played the game) is a lot more to do with reacting to loss than anything else

My daughter is watching it so I am getting the dubious treat of sitting through it in the same room.

I don't find these apocalyptic things enjoyable. They're just cgi misery and grim.

Why? Where's the enjoyment found in it or the uplift or sense of being better for having sat through it?

Leaves me agitated and stressed and thinking of how easily life could go to shit if the wrong folk get the wrong tools or powers.

Also without a bleak and hopeless setting lacking conflict, it is much more difficult to show an actual journey telling an uplifting story filled with character growth.

Apocalyptic and dystopia settings actually give something to reflect upon. Especially in the case of The Last of Us. It is not man made, it is not a power play, it was a real life fungus that had adapted to infect and live within humans (something it is unable to do currently).

There is no cure, anti-fungal treatments would be intense and cause far more harm than good to the human body.

I rarely watch anything these days. But a mystery or drama can do well to uplift without being dull fluff or making me feel miserable and devoid of hope.

Likely since it is a money maker for HBO, the story is done and dusted though, so any additions will be rushed and shoehorned in.

Season 2 is going to put a lot of people off based upon game experience and similar to how the walking dead went. But as I say the story is "done, ready, and completed"

Yeah it's in a very gameplay heavy portion at the moment. I think it'll go up again from here on out though, knowing the game.

Also though they did Henry and Sam a lot better in the game. Henry was a lot more lighthearted which gave a break from all the super darkness

Well I watched the last episode and I enjoyed it. I don't understand why episode 3 has such a low rating compared to others, it was the highlight of the show so far even if it did slightly drift off from gameplay. But I absolutely loved how much they made you connect and fall in love with Bill and Frank in such a short space of time.

Sam and Henry I enjoyed. I expected more but I think that's because my expectations were too high after episode 3 because they absolutely nailed it with engrossing me with the characters whereas it felt rushed with Sam and Henry.

I'm loving it though. I loved the big juicy thick bloater. Well, I think it was a bloater. But oh man I shit my pants. I wouldn't stans a fucking chance.

Pedro is fucking delightful too as Joel but I do have a big crush on him anyways.

Episode 3 is "hated" by some because its 2 gay guys, despite it being pretty obvious Bill was gay in the game. These are the vocal minority.

To others like me, and I did like the episode, that was not Bill at all from the game, which in one way is fine and the other it stops being what we wanted to see, doesn't make me dislike the show or episode but it is a let down and a disappointment.

And the 3rd group of dislikes is that it was for the most part nothing but filler, it barely had anything to do with the actual journey of the story, it just ate up time that could (some say should) have been spent on Joel and Ellie. Same as the "back story" for Henry and Sam, sort of just filler and didn't need to be in there - the game has them just as a group passing through that got caught. At one point Joel and Sam end up briefly alone and Henry with Ellie. Also later on Henry leaves Joel and Ellie to "die" so he can escape, but is there again to save them later. It ends the same way though.

Yes that was a bloater

Woo, gold star.

But yes I do think homophobia has a lot to do with it unfortunately.

I've never played the game *cries* but I get why in ways it's disappointing. At least in some kind of way it keeps the game unique for gameplayer but I guess when it doesn't feel like they are doing the game justice it's a bit frustrating.

It's going to be interesting to see what they change as the show progresses. I have a feeling some big things will be changed but that's all I'll say because I don't want to spoil it.

Oh it does the game justice for sure, some of the scenes have great detail even some shot for shot. But yes, having it separate itself from the game, my loyalty will always be to the games version of the story being the superior. I became attached to Troy Baker's Joel, and Ashley Johnson's Ellie and their specific journey, anything else will be inferior (even when they do great things with it).

There will definitely be a few more changes, especially since it seems they are skipping fall/autumn and going right in to Winter. 4 more episodes though and I think I know exactly which sections of the story will be for each episode assuming no more filler!

Yeah I love the game and the show. The actual story segments of the game come to roughly 6 or so hours. Certain gameplay scenes have already taken place like the first appearance of the clickers and the more recent sniper gauntlet. Plenty of "movie" cuts of the game on YouTube that for the most part could have been converted directly to live action. Skipping out the majority of generic gameplay.

Yeah but the game builds up a lot of story via the gameplay, the little chats you have while collecting more fucking scissors etc. That's what I feel the series is missing. Seeing their stupid chat which gets them a little closer to properly bonding.

Its doing what it can though but for me it wouldnt have hurt to have a box episode - maybe they got stuck in the sewer waiting for infected to leave, to flesh out Henry and Sam and Joel and Ellie a little more!

"As I said in my earlier post I'm still not getting the hype.

I know absolutely nothing about the game but everything in the show is signposted and really obvious what's going to happen long before it does.

There's nothing new or original in it.

I'm still watching it because it's not terrible but I'm at a loss to why people get so annoyed that others don't think it's the greatest show ever made when it's obviously not even slightly groundbreaking. "

Despite me actually liking it, unfortunately what they did in the end was focus on being a bit too artsy and cinematic at the expense to the pacing of the plot.

It was quite rushed and what should have focused far more on the bond between 2 single characters invested too much in side characters.

They boiled down the bonding moments to key scenes and everything else was filler. It should have focused so much more on the two main characters. This is why the game story is loved so much, you see and feel the bond evolve naturally and not just at key moments only like sudden breakthroughs during a therapy session.

It was well made and created but tried to condense a journey story in to less than 10 episodes.

I still enjoyed it, I will likely rewatch and enjoy it again. It was respectful to the source even with changes, but it didn't have the overall spark for me by the end to blindly praise it.

Remember, critique is not hate.
