Sane answers only ....

Person A has a birthday coming up.

Person A says to person B 'I'll have x for my birthday please'

Person B buys the gift and keeps it waiting for the birthday.

Person A sends a text ( about a week later ) saying, I bought the thing I wanted.

Over to you.

huh that's annoying.

You could return the item and get them something new.

You could give it to them and then they'd have two.

You could keep the item and get them something new.

You could return the item and not get them anything.

Person B tells person A that they have bought it and they then have a discussion about how to resolve the situation.

Boring answer I know, but clear communication is one of the few things that is guaranteed to make like a bit less stressful.

Be slightly annoyed.

Think if it's a gift I could possibly keep for someone else's birthday in the future if appropriate.

Take it back for a refund if not.

Buy them something else , maybe not as good for the hassle! Ha

Should be easy to get a refund, it is only a week after the purchase.

However, Person B might get more satisfaction by smacking Person A over the head with the gift that they had bought (ideally it is something that will make a resounding 'thonk')

Does it matter if the thing they bought has already been purchased?

What if it's a bottle of JD, a cake, a pair of socks or a woolly hat?

Sure....if it's a shiny new Xbox then they don't need two and it may as well be returned.

But there's not enough info to make a judgement I'm afraid.

Besides.......how are we supposed to know how reliable person B is? Maybe person A told them something similar last year and instead of buying them a giant strap-on they bought them a garden vacuum.........

I was about to say oh ... good point makes sense ... BUT ..... despite having two cars in the garage being a good thing..... I think Person B is miffed because they hunted the thing down ( obvs it's not exclusive ) then person A goes and spoils all the fun , takes the wind from the proverbials, rains on a parade ......

Person B is beginning to think that they haven't put childish things away yet and still gets pleasure from giving.....

Person A ..... is a pooper.
