Can anyone remember some of the old TV shows or series that would just not go out on air for whatever reason nowadays.

First off, Love Thy Neighbour

Titz Towers, North Notts

Every programme is of its time and very few are totally palatable in the years after they've been aired. Society changes and frankly a lot of the programmes that people say couldn't be aired today, often are on BBC4 or other channels.

"Can anyone remember some of the old TV shows or series that would just not go out on air for whatever reason nowadays.

Hmmmmm, Love Thy Neighbour.

I do wonder what the reaction to that would be now??

Because from memory, Eddie, the white bigot, was always made to look foolish.

Bill, the black neighbour, never rose to any of the name calling or derogatory terms used.

And the two wives, Barbie and the white wife (i cant remember her name), got on brilliantly.

The same with Till Death Us Do Part.

Alf Garnett was always made to look stupid and like an idiot. By his daughter, his son-in-law.

I remember one episode in a pub with the brilliant Derek Griffiths. He totally upstaged Alf by laughing and joking...leaving Alf speechless.

That was really the whole point of the show, highlighting the idiot racist bigot for the fool he was.

For today's audiences I doubt a watered down version would have the same impact.

But I can't see anyway they could possibly use the same language again.

I never really found it funny if I'm honest.

I think it's more a case of if it were made/remade for a modern audience it would have huge changes that would in some cases not resemble the original show/concept. So it is less that these things can still be shown, done, or said and more about it just would be left out instead of actually cut out in the name of being censored.

The inbetweeners, not all that long ago in the grand scheme of things. Reruns as far as I know are not edited or censored (after watershed/streamed) yet if it were remade things would be greatly changed and I doubt it would be half as popular because it would have lost a great deal of its personality that made it what it was.

I can remember watching an episode of only fools and horses when a white boy asked Dell for some money and after Dell boy had given him some, the child then asked if he could have some for his brother who was standing near by. The other child was black.

In todays politically correct world that episode would be seen to be inappropriate.

Most of these programmes are still aired now, regularly in some cases. Unlikely you'd be able to make one like Benny Hill now but if it hadn't been created and you'd put it on now it wouldn't do well. One of the most watched clips of that Citizen Khan sitcom is of the central character moaning about Eastern European migrants and how British they are. It's the sort of humour from decades ago. It just isn't funny to a modern audience.

Newry Down

All television programmes are a reflection of the Zeitgeist of the time and when watched again, out of context, sometimes appear crude, crass and racist, in specific cases.

Benny Hill is now deceased over thirty years, and TV executives cancelled his show because they did not change with the times, to reflect changing attitudes

I used to be tittilated by Benny Hill's antics in the 1970s and 80s, but now I am amazed at their crude simplicity; those shows cost a fortune to compile: over a million pounds per episode. Watch and learn.

Some of the Carry on films are also crude, and cater to the LCD: the lowest common denominator.

Love thy neighbour poked fun at prevailing race relations at that time as did Alf Garnett, but Jones comments about the natives in colonised countries not liking bayonets shoved up their asses really takes the biscuit, for me!

Many of the programmes mentioned above are still aired on TV, Benny Hill, Kenny Everett, On The Buses, the Carry Ons on are on few of the Freeview Channels. They do however usually give a warning that they ‘reflect views of the time and may cause offence’ before showing. This I believe is appropriate… so that people have a choice to watch or not … and then make their own minds up. It could also help people realise we have changed, and maybe why we needed to change. I am never a fan of banning anything because we are told it isn’t good …. reminiscent of other parts of history that aren’t so good!

These programmes were the staple diet of my childhood, and will be honest I love watching them now. I fully realise that it is very different now and watch them in context.

I have said this previously in another post. I find it very ironic that in todays TV / films and media, we are ‘fed’ programmes that routinely show sex, nudity, horrific violence, and extremely foul language … with no warning whatsoever… all traits that were unacceptable, and would have never got past the censors back then. … as I said, things change!

I love watching reruns of porridge... Makes me laugh when it's preceeded by inane warnings about "may contain humour that is offensive...." fucks sake. There's a lot more offensive shite on shows now and we don't get warned about them.

Same goes for Jim Davidson.

Unless he's not on anymore because the TV execs have just realised he's not funny.

"Kick Start, health and safety gone mad, these days so would never allow my suggestion.

If you’ve not seen it, it was a motorcycle trials competition for kids. Yes, teenagers riding motorbikes over obstacles, brilliant. It’s one of the reasons I got into motorcycling.

This was a fantastic show was a must to watch when I was younger. It was the starting point for many big names in motorcycle world today. Dougie Lampkin being one I believe. "

I used to compete in motorcycle trials as a teenager, riding over various obstacles, through streams, etc, as well as arena events riding over oil barrels, through waste skips and over the tops of cars. I wasn't that good, but I did win a few trophies and still have them on display on a shelf.

I'd love to see something similar on tv. I watch indoor arena events on YouTube. Toni Bou is probably one of the best riders ever.

Correct

There were no characters by those names in Captain Pugwash

There was a 'Master Mate' and 'Tom the Cabin Boy'

Lots of television shows that theoretically could not be shown on mainstream channels, such as the BBC, are actually broadcast on Freeview channels.

However, there is not the remotest possibility that Black and White Minstrel Show will ever see the light of day again; nor any full show, or part of any show featuring these:

Jimmy Savile

Rolf Harris

Stuart Hall (Knockout)

Paul Gadd aka Gary Glitter

The Minstrel Show was a really shocking programme, even in its heyday.

Love thy Neighbour, and Till death.., are actually highly educational, in how attitudes have changed, at least on the surface!

On the Buses, with the comdian, Reg Varney, was amusing and sexist, but not deeply offensive; the two Buses films were cheap British seaside postcard humour, of a sort.

First off, Love Thy Neighbour

Love Thy Neighbour is my all time favourite. Sadly the PC brigade have made sure it will never see the light of day again. "

"Love Thy Neighbour" could be seen as educational in the sense that it depicted the reality of racial tensions and prejudice that existed in society at the time. However, it is important to note that the way in which these issues were portrayed in the show, through racist jokes and language, would not be considered appropriate or acceptable by today's standards. The show's humour relied heavily on the offensive stereotypes and it reinforced negative attitudes and prejudices, rather than challenging or educating about them.

It's worth mentioning that some people may argue that it is important to understand the past, and that shows like "Love Thy Neighbour" can serve as a reminder of the attitudes and prejudices that existed in the past and the progress that has been made in terms of race relations. But it is also important to consider the potential harm that these shows can cause by perpetuating stereotypes and offensive attitudes.

Satire is dead anyway. They take the piss about a guy called Peter File getting beaten up because people are idiots and then in actual real life a paediatrician gets beaten up because people are idiots and think it means paedo "
