I've just randomly read the story of Troy Allen Gregg, a convicted murderer in the US who escaped from death row the night before he was due to be executed, then got in a bar fight and was killed on the same night!

Any other stranger than fiction stories or anecdotes?

"Operation Mincemeat!"

Now that is a fantastic story. Film was on at Christmas. Grizzly, but what kind of brain comes up with that?

Worthing

Since 2000, not all humans have been on Earth at the same time. This is due to occupancy of the International Space Station.

There use to Strange but True on ITV with Michael Aspel. Currently on Talking Pictures TV, they're re running In Suspicious Circumstances, hosted by Edward Woodward. Love that kind of stuff

I was just about to post on that, I used read about them as a kid (weird I know). Fascinating how that can happen.

Your washing can spontaneously combust if left in a pile, especially it has come out of the tumble dryer or off a radiator. A lot of house fires are started that way.

"Operation Mincemeat!

Thanks Tess, just googled, fascinating."

Ben MacIntyre's book on Operation Mincemeat is a must read!

I read his books about a Russian spy called Ursula Hamburger - absolutely insane, but true. Also his book about a KGB agent working for the Brits, still living in the UK, called Oleg Gordievsky - also completely bonkers, but true, especially how they got him out of Russia.

I stayed up reading far too late!!

The world of espionage is endlessly interesting and unbelievable. So many layers of truth and lies.

In 1971 Juliane Koepcke was on a Peruvian plane which was struck by lightning and broke up in mid air. She fell 3km strapped to her seat, survived, and then spent 11 days alone in the rain forest before finding help ! She is still alive and works as a biologist in Germany, rarely talking about her experience.
