It's a term that still flummoxes me, along with FWB. I know within my heart and mind what I'm looking for and desire, but I stop short of shoe-horning it into a term.

What does it mean to •me•? It means EVERYTHING, except the spousal attachment, the union, the commitment, the romance, the yearning, the love...; but not at the detriment to what is important to me: feelings, closeness, bonding, mental connection, trust, unconditional friendship, tactility and substance.

But that's just me.

But I think that depends on the person then. Maybe for you, there's no such things as you want to e emotionally I vested in the meet. But that doesn't apply to others who want to meet and purely see sex as an act between two consenting adults and nothing more

The answer to this is going to vary person by person. As it should!

For me, no strings means no ties. No commitments beyond being good to each other.

Nothing’s specifically off the table, it’s just a relaxed sexual relationship between two people. Whether that’s for a few hours or a few decades.

Whereas, in contrast, I’m married. That’s a sexual relationship which very much comes with strings attached. There’s a ring, a house, a duty of care to each other, a garage full of cars, a dog to look after, gas bills to pay and all sorts.

I can understand why it works/how it could work for others. Have sex. Don't see each other again. No how are you messages, random chats. Pretty perfunctory, heat of the moment sort of sex. Simple. Uncomplicated.

But for me, I like strings. I like friendship. I'd love for it to be minimal drama, wouldn't we all? No one wants to deliberately court it. I don't want to move in with anyone. Get married. Have a child with them.

It's such a subjective term isn't it?

Yes, as many have said, the strings are what I'm looking for. That connection is the key. Sex can be the supreme expression of that connection, a catalyst for it, or one essential element of touch and desire, but I never want to have 'just' sex. It would do nothing for me. I'd infinitely rather a sexless connection than a connectionless shag. And yet sex is hugely important to me.

Doesn't mean we have to be all Victorian about it. Sex doesn't have to mean moving in together, let alone marriage/kids/mortgage - the full catastrophe, as they put it in Zorba the Greek. But it's partly because I love people, and partly because I crave responsibility - I WANT to know about your day, your family problems, what the lady in the flower shop said about your hair...everything. For at least that time together, I need us to be the whole world to each other.

I ended a relationship with someone shortly before I joined here - someone who sometimes said she wanted to marry me, that she loved me, and far more extravagantly romantic things - because she never wanted to talk about her life anymore. She actively shut down talk like that. I had become at worst a distraction, at best a wonderful fantasy. But I wasn't real anymore. In a way, I didn't matter. That's not for me.

(Shouldn't need saying, yet somehow always does on these threads...OBVIOUSLY these are entirely personal opinions, and OBVIOUSLY there are masses of people who are wholly happy and fulfilled with physical only sex.)
