"Hello, I'm currently supporting someone through work who is going through the process of gender reassignment. I'm attending a clinic appointment with them next week, and I haven't got the foggiest on the process or what needs to be asked etc. The person I'm supporting is currently under the mental health act and has serious learning difficulties, so it's important to me that I get this right in terms of support and knowing as much as I can (in the next week) to support them as much as I can. If anyone would be happy to discuss this I'd be really grateful if you could respond, signpost me to resources, or just pm me. Thank you. " A quick Google will show links to NHS contact points and other support services available. Fab really isn't the place to ask advice on a subject such as this. You'll get as much bad advice as beneficial. Why not contact the clinic you're attending and explain the situation. It won't be unique and they're best placed to answer your questions. A

"The usual route is via their GP who would refer to a GI (Gender Identity) clinic. But as they have a LD as well, they might need to work with their local Community Mental Health Trust / Adult Social Care team also. The quality of care really is a postcode lottery for complex needs. It is dependant on individual professional champions who takes a specialist clinical interest and can develop a good care pathway. Unless you are their primary carer, you should not be the expected to be care navigator. As been suggested, you may want to refer to GP/CAMHS/Adult Social Care." I have no knowledge of this process but was glad that you mentioned the LD....this is a massive responsibility but I'd say especially so for someone with LD.

"Thanks everyone. I should add that this is M to F. All of their team are involved. " Are you their/ her support worker? It seems a bit unfair that you would need to know a lot about the subject so you can ask the 'right' questions. Can you be there as their chaperone/ friend/ morale support? The clinic should be able to answer all questions. Your person might not be able to process a lot of information all at once so maybe take notes? Apologies if this sounds stupid or condescending, it's not meant that way at all. I'm just trying to think of how I'd help someone. Hope everything goes ok.
