On the way out apparently.

More people dressing casually. Mixing a suit with trainers instead of leather shoes...

I remember spitting on my brothers army boots and rubbin in the dubbin ... the way he taught me

I remember having to polish my shoes every night.

How many of you still buy polish ?

I used to have to polish my shoes constantly and I got sick of it. I still do it now for a dress up event but other than that I just have some to keep my boots waterproof.

I used to polish my son's school shoes most evenings when he was in senior school because he played football in them at lunchtime.

The girls' shoes would get polished once a month, if they needed it.

All part of being a guy wearing proper leather shoes. You’ve got to take care of them and then they’ll last forever. I hate seeing guys in shoes where the toes are all worn away and have never been polished in their lives. It doesn’t matter if they are cheap or expensive, it’s all about how you look after your possessions.

As for polish, I swear by saphir. Medal ‘dor or parade gloss. Especially when mirror shining my toe caps. Ooh err misses then there are really good conditioners too. So many good things in their range. Just a bit pricier than kiwi and you can’t get it in Tesco!

We still have tins and give the school shoes a shine every morning before sending the little beauts off on their way.

We both have shoes of our own that get the treatment on special occasions.

Much like wearing a watch - one doesn't need to these days, it just adds a touch more style if you do.

The last time I used polish was when polishing shoes for a funeral last year.

Most of my boots don't need old school polish. Some just need a damp cloth and then a dry one to buff them up...they are a patent material.

Others are made of suede, the black I use a black spray.

The other colours I just brush up.

We buy the cheat stuff - liquid in a bottle with the little sponge on the end. Adequate for making kid's school shoes presentable. I did enough old fashioned polishing as a form of child labour and don't want to do it again.

I used to have to use a little brush (two brushes, actually) and polish in a tin that was nigh on impossible to open. Then buff it up with a soft cloth. I sat on the doorstep doing my school shoes, my brother's school shoes, my stepfather's smart shoes, my riding boots, my mother's riding boots and occasionally, if I could be bothered, my Doc Martens.
