Who goes to gigs alone?

I've just bought a single ticket for a gig in Feb cause I'm fed up missing out on bands I want to see cause my mates think my music taste is too odd

or the dates are no good for them.

I have no issues going to the cinema alone, so a gig should be similar but I'm a bit nervous I'll look like a creep, a weirdo, what the hell is she doing here (alone).

I love to go to lots of things alone OP. Don’t think about what others may think of you just enjoy yourself. I once sat on the front row of a Prince gig alone as I couldn’t give the other VIP ticket I had away

I had the best time and it’s still one of my best gigs.

Yeah, been at it for years. Cinema, gigs, restaurants, festivals, camping and hiking trips.

I still do these things with mates, I just don't depend on people when I make plans. It unlocks so much more to this life when you can spend time with yourself and be content.

Me. Went to 2 last year on my own, met up with people from a fan group for one of them, in a big venue, then completely on my own for a smaller venue.

I did go quite few times alone. I must say I loved it

No responsibility for other person, no compromise when we want to leave, where to stand, when to get a drink. Just me in my music bubble. Do it. I danced with random strangers, flirted at the bar. Sang with people around me. And came home happy.

I have done it! Depends on the music I guess but if it's a rock gig like I go to, just hang by the bar and chat to randomers and then when the music starts, no one really notices anyway!

Nothing weird at all! Good thing about gigs is everyone is there for the same reason so you can easily chat to people there. I do get what you mean though OP, it can be really daunting but you have the right attitude in not wanting to miss out

It's Gentleman's Dub Club & The Skints.

I'd love to do a festival alone, I feel when you're I'm in a big group I've missed out on acts I want to see to keep the rest of the people happy, so hopefully I can work my way up to that.

Little steps. You sound like you'd enjoy it. Just immersing in the experience rather than the company as such. It's very different. Go with your "craving"

Yep! I absolutely love it. Why not go and enjoy things? I always end up talking to people and having a brilliant time. My music taste is... eclectic and if others don't want to go I'm happy to go alone.

There's nothing wrong with doing that, whether it's going to the theatre (she types having booked a solo ticket to see a friend's show in the West End!), enjoying a good meal.

I’ve been to several gigs on my lonesome and don’t mind in the least. I’m also an organiser on Meet Up and often post gigs. It’s a good way for people to meet and enjoy live music.

I haven’t ever done that. I either try & drag a friend along half-reluctantly or spring it on an unsuspecting date ! Or most the time jusr miss out

I love cinema & never go as I have quite obscure tastes in film

I really should do this - I’ve finally overcome going on holiday alone and loved it.

But aren’t the best things enjoyed with others ? Isn’t that part of the experience / enjoyment ? I find it quite sad experiencing great things like sunsets alone

You should do it Yolo, you only live... yep that's cringey. Start small, go to an exhibition of something you love. Try out a lunch menu at an exciting new restaurant. Enjoy your own company. And then progress up the scale of things you do. I'm going on holiday alone in the summer for a few days. Can't wait. I'm not even going to download Tinder to find a poor sap to keep me entertained.

Just booked myself for one band I absolutely adore and retired 6 years ago. The vocalist is making a comeback as a soloist and wouldn’t miss it for the world. No one in my circle even knows h, so I’m going by myself, no regrets

Definitely worth going alone. I’ve done it a few times in the past at larger venues and it’s quite liberating. If anything else, it means you don’t lose the folk you’re with in the crowd, and you can leave early or stay late depending on how you’re feeling!

As others have said, its actually great fun. But of course that depends on your personality and if you are happy to chat to anybody.

Working shifts, mates working different shifts or having family commitments, means i usually fly solo at most gigs.

Even if i travel further for them, up in Manchester for example.

If you've got a shared passion for music, you soon start chatting to others.

Plus, because of my height, others use me as a marker. When they go to get drinks, they look for my head in the crowd and know that's where their partner or group is.

Ah, see, it's weird as am very comfortable in my own company. I just have degrees of things I can do alone. Gallery? Yes, absolutely. Drink in a pub? Yep. Cinema? Can do, at a push. 'Proper' restaurant lunch/dinner? No, can't do it. A gig in that last category too.

I go to loads of local gigs on my own, I like my own company and there are always loads of folks to chat to. I rarely do big gigs, as I don't have the cash, but just go for it and enjoy.

I have the same issue in that my friends all hate my music. I've not braved going alone yet though, what I tend to do is invite a Fab friend! They're way less likely to say no when they're prob getting lucky afterwards

It’s great. Stand where you want. Go to the bar when you feel like it. Sing along without giving a damn.

The Skints always have a relaxed, friendly crowd anyway. You’ll be grand.

I have done, big and small venues.

Usually find it’s a good place to make small talk and meet people, especially smaller venues as there’s already shared interests.

To be fair, I usually look like a weirdo even when I'm with friends so maybe I'm overthinking it

Thanks for all the feedback Forumites and those of you not brave enough, start at the cinema cause once everyone is sitting down in the dark, no one knows you're on your own.

Very true. I have been dizzy and a little dehydrated after as I don't drink alot th day before or that day fir this exact reason. Many times got a good spot and no way was I leaving it.

I've been to all sorts of events by myself. Love not having to pay double for everything. West end shows are essentially half price for me since I don't have to buy two tickets for the other half. I can upgrade my seats as well.

I pretty much go solo anywhere to any event. Nothing wrong with it, and very liberating/confidence boosting to be able to show up for yourself anywhere and have a good time.

GDC were the highlight for me. Thought it would have been The Skints just with the memories associated with their songs but GDC were just so high energy on stage.

I'm seriously contemplating a festival ticket just to see GDC again this year

I do a lot on own - gigs, theatre, meals, cinema etc. I enjoy my own company. Just don't make the mistake I did when I saw the Spice Girls 4 years ago. I paid nearly £200 for the ticket, drank too much, don't remember the gig and the 2 strangers had to walk me home

Good on you OP and glad you enjoyed it.

I think gigs are probably easier to do solo than some other things as I don’t think it would be so noticeable you are on your own.

I’m tempted to do the theatre solo as i begrudge paying the ticket price to drag my reluctant hubby along and my friends never commit, can’t afford it or don’t have childcare. I’m not bothered about what other people think, but I’d feel like a loner and missing out on enjoying it with people. Everyone else would be there with others.
