Tasteless and awful. The human race didn’t get to where it is by not eating meat.

Vegans eat my food’s food and I find that offensive.

Vegan kitchen is delicious and u can make amazing recepies .

A vegan diet needs a lot n a lot of green peas and beans .

Corn n those “ vegans mince “ is just soya bread .

“ vegan burgers “ are slices of soya bread

Products on shops is all bullshit .

Is all soya bread n other said sell tofu

When u can just eat the soya bean with out all that crap n eat the all thing . The fibre and the protein .

I done vegan for a bit but I didn’t done it right so I was getting weaker n weaker . Didn’t last long .

But with a lot of green peas ( richest n cheapest food in market ) and a lot of beans u can do a good vegan diet .

There are good and bad diets of both vegan and omnivore type.

However the main push these days seems to be to promote a bad vegan diet high in processed foods

Between 77 and 90% of all soya is fed to livestock. Only about 2% of the remainder goes to westerners; the rest if for the Asian Market.

Vegan diet is largely a healthy one, but some vital nutrients are lacking, such as Vit B12, which can be taken as a supplement.

Regrettably, because of the production methods being used, and depleted soils, vegetarian foods are sometimes lacking in essential minerals and micro nutrients.

An annual blood test will enable strict vegans to ensure they are getting what they need to stay in good shape; the obesity rate in the UK and Ireland is exploding exponentially and needs to be curbed.

Veganism is a strict regime that requires careful implementation.

Been vegan for over 9 years. I was vegetarian for 9 years before that.

Was only difficult for the first couple of months while I learned to read ingredients, but I have no intention of ever consuming animal products again.

I guess it can be a pain in some social situations, but ethics is more important than inconvenience.

My blood test results are always fine and I'm not deficient in anything.

Vegan food can be very tasty, I think that the key to making good veggie/vegan food is by using a good variety of herbs and spices to enhance the flavour.

I think a lot of people knock it because they are scared to try something different

I experienced my first vegan restaurant and the food was amazing. So clean too. I eat vegan and vegetarian food as i love vegetables more than meat. But couldn't be a vegan as i love eating most things and don't want to be deprived of it. But vegan cooking definitely getting better, even their cheeses are.

B12 and a standard multivitamin.

(Incidentally, in the UK, the quality of soil is so bad that livestock are supplemented with B12 too, otherwise the entire population would be deficient.)

I've been vegan for over 13 years so obviously I like it.

I find it unfathomable the people who say vegan food is bland. You've never had a tomato, bannanas, rice, beans, parsnips, potatoea, bread, peas etc. There's so much variety it's unreal.

People who say vegan food tastes crap are all shit cooks, the food isn’t the problem their lack of talent/imagination/ability to read a recipe book is. Meat also tastes shit if you don’t season it, cook it appropriately and add a few herbs, spices etc, and funnily enough, all those herbs and spices we use to make that meal taste better are sourced from plants!

if it’s vegan ready meals they’re complaining about…meat-based ones are also pretty awful.

Vegan food isn't inherently good or bad. The cheese still seems to be hard to crack, but vegan block is an excellent butter substitute. I'm not, personally, a fan of meat substitutes, but they are apparently getting better.

Provided you eat freshly-made vegan food, it's incredibly healthy, too.

I have been vegan for many years. The range and quality of vegan products in shops and of vegan options in restaurants etc. now makes it really easy to live as a vegan.

If you are vegan but miss decent cheese seek out Palace Culture products: for Christmas I bought a blue and a goats cheese that were not a million miles from the real thing. Even my carnivorous father was impressed.

It’s a strange question. Imagine asking if people think non alcoholic drinks are good. But they’re not really asking whether vegan food is good (obviously we all eat many vegan foods) but whether a completely vegan diet is a good thing.

Generally, I like cashew based cheeses. I haven’t found a cheddar replacement I like, and I did love cheddar! But hey - we all make some sacrifices.

ALL food is vegan , except for animals.

I have EXACTLY the same food as everyone else but with NO dead animal.

What is confusing people about veganism are the 'meat' , 'fish'and 'cheese' substitutes made commercially which are misleading and not particularly healthy.

Anyone can be a plant eater and continue to kill animals if they want but they wouldn't be vegan ... especially in their leather shoes, animal tested makeup and tallow based soap.

A lot of people mention beyond burger. I must try one. I guess I won't though once I realise it's a fiver a burger and the burger is made from beans

I'll check it out online.

I do like shwarma meat to put in a salad wrap but mostly I make seitan for protein. Dirt cheap and very versatile.

Just Googled it, and it seems it may currently be reduced to £3 at Waitrose. Based on pea protein, by the way.

Beyond Burger Ingredients

Water, Pea Protein*(16%), R*apeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Rice Protein, Flavouring, Stabiliser (Methyl Cellulose), Potato Starch, Apple Extract, Colour (Beetroot Red), Maltodextrin, Pomegranate Extract, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Maize Vinegar, Carrot Powder, Emulsifier (Sunflower Lecithin),

I will definitely pass thanks. I'd eat one for a snack or sommat but i'd be mindful that i'd had NO protein and Beyond Burger are NO meat substitute.

It's pea and carrot powder. Potato powder , rice powder and cocounut fat...... and preservatives....sod that.

I make a good bean burger. It's all beans with non of the shite in it.

Most of the 'replacement meat' options available are pumped full of fat and sugar to give them that meaty taste. So to have a healthy vegan diet you really do need to go back to basics, avoiding processed options and preparing everything from scratch.

I struggled for flavour, variety and texture when I went vegan a couple of years ago. I stuck it out for about a year before I started adding in occasional organic meat and fish options, and I have to say that I felt so much better when I did.

The people who try vegan and fail, do so because they make it about themselves.

If they made it about the real victims and preventing animal abuse, it would become a moral imperative -- and that would lead to more determination to work out any issues and stop making excuses.

Ah you are the second person to make that cathedral city so I'm going to give that a go if I can find it.

Been on a plant based diet for two years now. I have to take strong vitamin B supplements anyway sure to overuse of omeprazole for nearly a decade.

My health has never been better and I never have acid reflux which plagued me for twenty years.

Like with any food preparation you get out what you put in. Purchase and prepare the right food and it'll taste good and be healthy. If you don't why would you expect it to be?

I'm going more plant centric for 2023, but with more intent than previous tests.

I probably won't be completely vegan or vegetarian, but will look to be v before looking at other options.

I probably will dip into fake meats, but in the knowledge they won't that healthy. However, most burgers aren't great. As is most processed foods.

But the more I look at it, the more I imagine I was malnutritioned when trying paleo. And the idea that our ancestors ate a lot of meat doesn't seem to have much science behind it. Apparently gladiators were vegan ! (They also had more belly fat than ppl imagine)

There are a few brands, including Beyond Meat and Richmond that I just cannot eat because they are too much like the product they are a substitute for. I became a vegetarian as soon as I left home at 18 because I didn't like the taste or feeling of meat in my mouth (stop tittering at the back!). All these years later I can still remember it and don't enjoy eating products that try to emulate meat too closely.

Completely agree that a home cooked plant based meal is both healthier and more delicious - and often so easy to rustle up.

Not quite in agreement here, if I go out with friends, I wouldn't "demand" a Vegan option but I'll always find something to eat. Not sure why you would go into a vegan restaurant anyway let alone demand meat. It doesn't make sense

Not sure I’m quite getting the scenario. Demand is quite a strong word. And are we talking about restaurants here? It’s pretty rare to go into a restaurant without a vegan option.

just somewhere around here

I (Mr R) am 53 Ibecame vegetarian 5 years ago vegan one year ago.

Before that I ate all meats the bloodier the better.

I never really consumed much dairy so it hasn't been that tough.

I dont mind any of the "vegan" foods like someone said its in the preparation. You can get horrible meat dishes too

I know that this isn't the subject of the thread but how anyone can put living creatures through the processes that provide people with food saddens me

"The people who try vegan and fail, do so because they make it about themselves.

If they made it about the real victims and preventing animal abuse, it would become a moral imperative -- and that would lead to more determination to work out any issues and stop making excuses."

Yes 100%

if a place promotes itself as being non-vegan, then yes, that's not on. But what I suspect you are talking about is someone asking for a vegan option in a restaurant that caters across various tastes. I mean what is a "meat selling place" other than a butchers ?

In my mind, noone can demand a vegan option. I suspect most people don't demand. And one can vote with their feet.

But the idea that one can't ask for vegan options just because the restaurant also sells meat is crazy. And makes meaters come across as protective of their diet as vegans are of theirs.

Not at all! I go out with meat eaters and never demand anything! I will choose veggie option if they have it! Which these days most if not all have ! If not I would choose sides that I could eat! If people come to my house I cook them meat! I pick and pack meat in my job! I would suggest people that demand are just those kind of people! Vegans/meateaters alike nothing to do with being vegan tbh! X

"What do folk think of vegan foods?"

Nothing wrong with them, people are always having a go a Vegans and Vegetarian because they choose yo eat different, why?

I eat meat and I eat vegetarian or vegan foods too, just because you hevr a personal preference does not mean that the other is wrong.

I am coeliac I do not have a choice over what I eat, are they going to have a go at me because Gluten Free is faddy? If you prefer chicken to beef or soya why is it such a big deal?

People say we are designed to eat meat, well we have never fully adapted to meat (read Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson) which is probably why cancer is so prolific. We where all brought up on nuts and berries. It's all food just eat and enjoy.

To me it makes a nice change occasionally - when working in London I often treat myself to a meal at a vegan restaurant - done properly it's delicious - done badly you may as well eat cardboard!

There's no way I'd ever go vegan (or vegetarian) but just want to point out in the interest of balance that vegan food prepared / cooked well can be delicious

"Thanks.

Im not going to. I read the ingredients. It's rubbish and full of coconut fat.

The pack says 'even meatier' on the front. That's shouldn't be allowed, it's misleading.

As a dedicated vegan I don't like the beyond burgers. They're passable if there's nothing else but the amount of fat that comes out of them when cooked is disgusting.

Prefer a fresh home cooked meal from raw veg.

My go to fast food meal was always burgers so I kinda really like a treat in the form of a beyond burger. How much worse can it be than an actual burger right?

They are good! Burgers was thing I moat missed when I gave up meat! And the Richmond range taste very much like meat as well x

Ahh yes that's understandable then! I loved the taste/texture of meat and I really do still miss it! I even considered having turkey/beef/and gammon I had cooked Xmas day it looked so yummy! But I didn't I've not lapsed into eating meat since I stopped! X

Is it just me or does anyone else have trouble when having sex with meateaters. I can taste it and smell it and it can be a big put off. Throwing up in someones knickers as you lower them with great expectations is not good.

I have a vegan friend who ran a cafe (now sadly closed), and some of the food she cooks is amazing (I regularly get tubs of her refried beans to keep in the freezer, they're delicious and make a quick and filling meal). But, I enjoy meat and dairy too much to change my diet to plant based.

I'm curious to know what the carbon footprint is for production of all these fake alternatives.. Not to mention how much water is used in the process

When we should be eating less processed foods for our health, it really makes you wonder why so much effort goes into promoting unnatural food stuffs rather than vitamin laden fruit veg and legumes

Oh but of course... Capitalism

They address it here: https://www.ktchnrebel.com/plant-based-burger-market-overview/

“QUESTIONS OF CARBON

The key selling point of plant-based meat is that you get the satisfying sizzle of a real burger, while taking a relatively low personal toll on the environment. And both Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods have carried out life cycle assessments to prove it.

While producing a Beyond Burger requires 99% less water, 93% land, 90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 50% less energy than a 1/4lb beef burger, one Impossible Burger has been shown to save the equivalent of 75 square feet of land, half a tub of bathwater and 18 miles of emissions in a car, compared to a burger made from cows.“

I make a mango and passionfruit vegan cheesecake it’s really good. Loads of crushed roasted nuts and maple syrup on the base, coconut cream, soya soft cheese & soya cream whipped with ground vanilla pods and lime juice then a sauce made of passionfruit, mango and brown sugar.

I’m slowly reducing meat and animal products by 50% feeling so much stronger & healthier for it

Well ideally we'd all be whole food based right.. So certainly we don't 'need' it (to survive) but from A variety /something different aspect it has value

I wouldn't want to eat it ever day or even regularly .. But that's is personal taste right ? Some people eat macdonalds every day i guess?

I think vegan food is, in a lot of cases, what makes up a lot of most people's diets, just not the animal products parts.

I'm not a fan of some of the "alternative" options... vegan cheese and bacon aren't great in my opinion, but each to their own.

I'll try to be clear.

1. I don't preach veganism and really don't mind who eats what. If someone likes meat substitutes then let them fill their boots.

2. We don't eat meat cos we like it ( mainly ) we eat meat as it's a high protein source.

3. Plant based burgers are NOT high in protein like meat is ..... so they are NOT a good proteins substitute.

4. Vegan 'cheese' is coconut fat and potato starch ..... it's NOT a high protein food like cheese.

If I was eating for health .... I would not choose the meat substitutes cos they are mis named and full of coconut fat and other additives.

I eat with the belief that I don't want to commodify animals when there is no need so I make tasty food from beans, peas, lentils , sweet potatoes, rice , spices etc .....mostly olive oil , great curries yada yada ....

I don't eat processed plants blended and coloured to resemble meat but I imagine those products can tempt meat eaters ....

Does that make more sense ?

totally. I agree it's not a great meat substitute wrt macros or micros. And not really healthy. You totally don't need fake food to be vegan or enjoy your food as a vegan ... A chickpea burger is great. I see fake meat as being a bit of a vice. With no more nutritional value than a glass of wine or a beer or a .

But if you look at the labels, they are high in protein. They use soy or pea protein and try to replicate what meat offers. The concern with them, from what I understand, is the salt content and that they’re highly processed.

But as for the processing - if someone thought they’re having fake meat for the vegetables in them: those vegetables are processed so they’re not getting the benefit. But if they have fake meat for the protein and also lots of salad, it hasn’t been explained clearly to me what the problem with that is (as long as they don’t eat too much other salt).

As for vegan cheese - they’re not all coconut; also cashew, and some almond and some other stuff, which tastes a lot more natural than processed coconut oil.

Plant burger has twice the fat / just over half the protein / and lots more salt and some more carbs than a 'meat' burger.

Eat what you want. I am saying a plant burger is NOT a meat substitute and it isn't ...... it's a plant burger with a different nutritional value and a different taste.

"Plant burger has twice the fat / just over half the protein / and lots more salt and some more carbs than a 'meat' burger.

Eat what you want. I am saying a plant burger is NOT a meat substitute and it isn't ...... it's a plant burger with a different nutritional value and a different taste. "

A lot of new vegans and sometimers get confused eating “plant based” and don’t actually read the back to see it’s highly processed which is worse for you, best thing if your concerned about what your consuming is an alkaline diet

I love all meat, and will never change my diet. But if someone chooses to go vegan for whatever reason then I’ve no problem with it.

What annoys me is when you see some folk preaching on that we have to go vegan because of this that and the other. I’ll leave them alone and expect the same in return.

Why would I want to be left alone? That's boring and selfish - discussion and trying to better oneself are good and fun.

Trying to better others? Perhaps moral in theory, but normally pointless and counterproductive in practice.

But if one sees someone harassing someone on a bus, protecting that person is surely right? In theory, why is being vegan different? If one believes that hurting sentient animals and the planet is wrong, then speaking must be right.

In theory. The zeitgeist is such that veganism is still thought of as a private choice rather than an obviously ethical choice like equality and not hurting people, so preaching doesn't work.

According to their websites, Waitrose beef burger has 20.9g protein per 100g, 20.3g fat. Beyond Burger has 17g protein; 19g fat.

Where's your source for half the protein and twice the fat?

I expect that cooking fresh food, making burgers from beans etc, is healthier. Personally, I don't have the time, creativity or space (my mother in law's normally in the kitchen cooking meat) for that. And I love beyond burgers. It's quite simple.

Others here obviously don't. But using words such as yuk and shite to describe it - clearly pejorative. When sited by a omnivore, that's normally in support of eating meat; when sited by a fellow vegan, I think (though can't prove), it's also a moral statement.

Not a vegan or vegetarian but I eat more vegetarian food than I do meat, closest to meat I have now is fish. I’m quite happy replacing meat with things like tofu or jackfruit and a few friends have eaten things I’ve made and not noticed the difference

Sometimes when cooking a meat-based meal, and coming up short on interesting veggie accompaniments, we may break out the vegan recipe books for something a bit more interesting than the old +2 veg.

I find vegan/vegetarian books more inspiring with vegetable-based dishes than their traditional counterparts.

Bloody awful. Rather have high quality meat any day of the week. We've seen the waste product that comes out of the factories that produce vegan foods. Putrid doesn't even come close to describing how bad it smells. It makes you wonder what on earth they are putting in the vegan products.

Fry’s chocolate crème?

We couldn’t be vegan - it’s not just the food - it’s the lifestyle choices and everyday consumables that I just haven’t the wherewithal to research.

What we do try (as much as possible) is to make ethical choices with what we eat. I’ve tried a couple of vegan processed foods and it’s not for me.

I respect the dedication of a vegan though.

I find the thought of insect munching bilious & revolting. I don't care how nutritional it is.... They have got to go a long way before they can make it appealing to the general "Joe Public" in my humble opinion.

Saying that I could do with some monks vegetables & bean curd. Num,num.

Vegans not so much, insect eaters most likely.. plentiful easy grown protein source that can be grown in small scale farms. The economic out way standard farming practices 100:1. Just need the western public to think more Asian/ more African in diet.

But the fat burgers of the USA and Europe song gonna buy that for 50years....

Reading some of the responses on here are shocking

Some need to read what a vegan actually is.

If you think that eggs are vegan then you need to look at the poultry industry where thousands of male chicks are ground up alive as they are no use to the process

Once of the biggest obstacles some vegans face is the debate as to whether a vegan can eat eggs. Some vegans have started calling themselves ‘veggans’ and adopted the vegan diet but with the addition of an egg breakfast here and there.

This is the big question. Generally speaking, eggs are not vegan because they are farmed from an animal and consumed by humans. However, some people argue that cruelty-free eggs from ethically sourced and cared for hens are acceptable, because the hens produce the eggs naturally. Many vegetarians eat eggs for this reason.

For example, these types of eggs would come from a hen sanctuary, where farmers and volunteers would only collect and sell eggs that they come across. The money collected from the sale of such eggs would go towards the care of the rescue battery hens retiring in the sanctuary.

True, as a vegetarian I ate eggs and sometimes do miss them.

Our old neighbours gave us eggs from their pet chickens and they were gorgeous.

But 99.9% (vague I know) of any meat/dairy/eggs purchased come from industrial farming.

I as an individual cannot be party to this.

So the small sacrifices I make in my diet give me knowledge that I am not directly responsible for the death of an animal

Eggs are not and will never be suitable for vegans -- if it is made from, comes from, or uses the resources of an animal, it isn't a vegan product.

Yes there may be ethical grey areas in some minority instances, but that doesn't make it vegan.

Any attempt to get around the definition of veganism stops it being about animals and starts to make it about humans.
